We booked our room in October for our post-Christmas holiday stay. My husband and I travel to Los Angeles a few times a year so that my daughter can see her father, and we use the opportunity to enjoy the ocean view, hike the canyons, and try out local cuisine. My husband and I splurge on travel more than we do on "things" and so take care when choosing hotels, trails, and restaurants. Prior to arrival, we were excited because the room level we selected included a fireplace, a private deck, a soaking tub, and other amenities that we request when we travel. We looked at the rooms online, and they looked gorgeous. Plus they were housed in bungalows, which we have enjoyed at other resorts, including Miiamo in Sedona, the Boulders outside of Phoenix, Migis in Maine, and the Inn at Ocean's Edge in Main, etc. We arrived late evening to great service immediately. We were very tired and ready to sleep because of the time difference. When we walked into our room, we were very confused. The room was at the back of the resort on the bottom floor of a two-story cabana. We walked in, and saw only a small window at the back and another door. Excited to see the patio and view, I opened the door only to discover that it was just a door to another path to go back to the main part of the hotel, and our view was of a bush blocking a retaining wall separating the property from the residential neighborhood. The man who took us to our room said, "Oh look, you have a second entrance!" That was not what we wanted to hear. My husband said we were supposed to have a patio, and the gentleman tried to sell us on the second entrance. Then he showed us how the fireplace works. When he switched it on, it did not light up. He said that it would eventually start but just needed to warm up. It never did start. We tried turning it on and off a few times, but it wasn't working. We told the gentleman that this room was not at all what we were expecting because it had no view, no private patio, no working fireplace, and it was loud because we could hear the people above us moving around. He said he would promptly get us another room and to sit tight. We received a call about 15 minutes later saying that there were no additional rooms for the night but that they would move us to a room that would better accomodate our dog the next day (we did not bring a dog, so this confused us). We went to bed somewhat disgruntled. The reason for the four stars comes next. When we woke up, we left to go hiking, and the front desk attendant said we'd have another room when we returned. We we came back, they took us to our new room. It was exquisite. We were still in the back of the property but now had a patio with a beautiful view of the ocean. It was in a light and bright one-story bungalow. The room was smaller than the first and did not have a fireplace at all, but it was a much more beautiful package. The only downside was that it was attached to another room, so technically the patio was not private. We were worried that our neighbors would utilize the space in front of our room because it had the best views, but they did not. I could tell from looking at the bungalow that they got the fireplace and a beautiful view from their window. It seems as though most people book the bungalow together (both rooms) because there was a door that attached. We did have an ant problem in the bathroom, but I know from living in LA that ants can be very difficult once they find a way in. Overall, we loved our room and our view, and we loved the service at the hotel. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We enjoyed massages at the spa (amazing), the pool area (a bit busy but still relaxing), and dinner at the restaurant (wonderful, personal service from Aaron). So our initial take was replaced by the rest of the stay. I would highly recommend staying at the property, and we likely will return for our next visit to California.
