My wife and I travel for business and pleasure. This is one of many trips to California and we had a chance to stay down town. The hotel is in a very busy part of town and close to Union Square. It is an older property so the elevators are slow however everyone is pleasant. The reason I gave this hotel only 2 stars is because of it's location. There are many many homeless people begging for food and money. We walked to China Town and it was the same thing there. I do not know personaly if all of... Read more

My daughter booked the room through Booking agency. If you have read my reviews, I love staying in historic Hotels and Castles, as I did this time. Requested a Pet free room. It's a normal request from me when travelling with my Granddaughter. She is allergic to Dogs and Cats. Now, I have to say I didn't ask at the time of check in if our request was granted. After getting settled in our room with a view.(nice) We were happy. Until I found out that a Service Dog Convention was going on in the Ho... Read more

I had been to this hotel before to dine at Scala and enjoy the Starlight Room. This time I was staying for a conference at the hotel. Eddie the doorman greeted me and told me once I got settled, to come and see him for dinner recommendations. Check in went smoothly and I was put on the 20th floor, room 2001. As the Starlight room is right above, I was told if it was noisy I could move. As the elevator neared the top, I could here the club in the elevator and hallway. However, my room was on a co... I've been here twice. The first time it was a great experience and the room was great. The second time I paid the same price for a very small room an very inferior to the first one. The cleaning was not good at all and the bathroom was super small. Won't be back. Regardless of that the location is great. Just one block away Union Square.

I used to love Kimpton Hotels. They were funky and boutiquey. Now they‚??ve gotten into the main stream. The Sir Francis Drake is an old, old, hotel that has received the most superficial of facelifts. To call the rooms tiny would be overly generous. I can barely get into the closet or bathroom. I have a great view of the fire escape. And unfortunately, the hotel can‚??t find me a larger room. The place has an overall dreariness about it. Implosion can‚??t come soon enough!

This is a lovely historic San Francisco hotel in a great position just off UnionSquare. The lobby bar is stunning - marble, chandeliers and Drake murals. Our room was small but nice - the bed was particularly wonderful with great sheets. The bathroom was sadly a let down - very cramped with rough workmanship and lacking a luxurious feel. The only mirror in the room was in the bathroom which was harshly lit and made me look about 90. Additionally the towels were too old and should be donated to t... Read more

Recently headed down to the City on the Bay for some R&R. I am a supporter of the Kimpton brand and a Karma Rewards member. Was a little concerned for the reviews of the Kimpton Sir Francis Drake have been below average. As the hotel is an older landmark hotel - was prepared for the smaller bathroom experience. As I was flying into SFO late - did try to contact the front desk to notify the hotel that I would need a 'late check in' and not to give my room away. Tried about 5 times calling th... Read more

I have stayed at the Sir Francis Drake many times as an Inner Circle member (as have multiple generations of family members!) and I am sorry to say that it is no longer what it used to be. Since the beginning of last year, for example, I've spent over 20 nights at the Drake. Because of my many stays here, I've come to notice lots of things about the hotel, both good and bad. Sometimes, one bad experience at a hotel can be a fluke. If issues are recurring, it's a cause for disappointment. ... Read more

Although I agree with many other reviewers who have commented on the small size of the bathrooms in this hotel, that seems like a fair trade-off for a hotel as charming as the Sir Francis Drake. The service throughout the hotel is great, and there's probably not much they can do to make the elevators move faster or to increase the size of the bathrooms. I particularly enjoyed the dinner and breakfast that I had in the La Scala restaurant. The restaurant is very busy, and I had to sit at the b... Read more

The first room I had smelled very musty and had a badly stained floor of its shower. I requested a new room and was promptly assigned a new one. This one also had the stained shower and toilet but no smell. The next morning I discover no hot water in the shower. I spoke to a couple in the elevator and they said they only had hot water. The lobby is very nice but it is all downhill from there. I will never stay at a Kimpton again.
