Hotel Carlton is a decent value for the price and the best aspects were the friendly staff and the very spacious room. Breakfast in the restaurant was cheap compared to other hotels of similar quality and the food was very good. The drawbacks: no mini-bar, no room service, no toiletries and it was fairly noisy, not from outside, but from doors slamming and people in the hallways/neighbouring rooms. Would I stay again? Maybe. I'd really like to rate it 3.5 as it's definitely not a 4.

I stayed here for two nights visiting San Francisco. Staff of the hotel is incredibly friendly; service with a smile, and since the hotel is small the service has a personal touch. The rooms are a bit noisy, but clean but clean. And given the price of the hotel I think it is value for money. Since the rooms are not sound proof i would rate the hotel at 4 out of 5 stars. But given the friendliness of the staff i have rated it at five stars

Stayed for 1 week Jan 2017 Other reviews say this is close to the piers - it is not. The walk to Pier 39 is at least 40 minutes each way which depending on route can involve some very steep hills. The ferry terminal is about 30 minutes if you walk fast. The location is not good, the streets around the hotel are not in a nice area - particularly if you walk from the hotel in the direction of the Civic Centre. The lobby is nice enough and we had a nice greeting from the reception staff. We didn... Read more

Small hotel, nice rooms, clean, friendly staff. Good location, walking distance to Union Square, Chinatown, etc. Went back there for a the second time because the first stay was so pleasant. A central staircase makes it convenient to walk up to rooms.

This was our second stay at this hotel. It wasn't quite as great as I remembered but it was fine. The location is good roughly a 10 minute walk to Union Square and there are many restaurants and bars on Polk St which is 2mins away. The room was clean and the staff were pleasant. I wasn't blown away by this hotel but I think the price is fair so would consider it again if I was in the city.

Absolute little gem of a hotel. As soon as we checked in we were met with such a lovely warm welcome and nothing was too much for the staff. The nightly half hr or so free wine and live music from local artists was a great way to chill after a busy day, before going out again at night. The location was great about 5/10 min walk to maceys and big shops. 40mins walk to fisherman's warf. We loved walking different streets each day and exploring the city. I would definitely stay here again if I'm ev... Read more

Stayed here as a couple from Jan 26th to Jan 29th for three nights. This was our first trip to SF and this hotel made the experience of the city so much better. We changed to this hotel fairly last minute as we had booked into a terrible hotel. We are so glad we changed. This location was perfect for us about a 10-15 minute 0.8 mile walk to Union Square and close to Powell for cable cars. The room (we have 510) was huge and light and airy with a massive walk in cupboard and safe. Great city vi... Read more

Absolutely loved the look, feel, vibe, location and hospitality of the Hotel Carlton. We choose it for the history and the unique decor, true historic SF. We stayed in room 917 which was away from the lift and the street, it was quiet and had some views of Union Square (when the fog and rain weren't at play). The heating in each room can be controlled by you the guest, and should you be in the need for some fresh SF bay breezes, the windows open enough for you to take advantage. The staff were ... Have booked 2 rooms for 3 days. This is a really special place. Rooms are great- not slick modern but quality retro. Good size with all that is required. Friendly staff who really want to help. Great 5.30 drinks that showcases local music talent. Maybe not for everyone but definitely for those that are over the Hilton experience. Live like a local.

An appetizing menu promises and delivers tasty, satisfying meals that will please any desire. Unique twists on "standards" make others mundane to be memorable treats. Personally, I loved the House Burger . Simple fare but one of the best in San Francisco. Great beef cooked as requested on a perfect roll. The mouthwatering fried Brussels sprouts were so good that we ordered a takehome portion. Believe it or not I'd go back for the fried pickles. Every food category is represented creatively. Th...
