SF is a great city but the homeless situation has gotten out of control and the Monarch is in the middle of it. The shower didn't work, the toilet ran on-and-off all night... and the hotel smells old and mildew and mold everywhere. Do not book this hotel.

The hotel is located close to the civic centre and lots of homeless shelters. We did not feel safe walking from the station to the hotel. The hotel looked like a homeless shelter from the outside! The lift is very old and did not feel safe. The room was not clean. The bathroom had no hot water. Staff had little to no english and took no accountability for this, and sent a plumber to the room on his own to check out the water. He came to the room, and left without talking to us. We had no idea wh... Read more

First off, no parking which is an extra unnecessary charge on top of an overpriced small hotel. Very small room, no refrigerator inside room, heater? Where the heck was it? Since it was a chilly night in San Francisco I wanted to turn the heat up just a little. But no such thing as a heater. Their WiFi slowed down my internet, not very efficient. So I used my service without it. But at least WiFi was available. ū?§®Lots of noise, traffic, homeless people making loud noises. I was able to hear it... Read more

Was very over priced for what you get, the wifi is shocking I'm unsure how they can even advertise it as having wifi! Opposite a homeless shelter so will get people coming up to you when outside quite frequently. Rooms were just standard. No hair dryers. Although was an experience staying in this hotel as it's so old and so many weird and wonderful people on the outside I personally wouldn't go back.

This is my second time staying in this hotel. This is a very old hotel. They need a renovation to make this hotel a better place to stay. The Wifi was not so good. The escalator was very old and scary.

Upon arrival we couldn't help noticing the amount of street drinkers and beggars in the area , the lift was broken but we were upgraded to a king size bed the room was clean and tidy but the shower was clogged up with lime scale or pressure was very poor the bath took forever to fill probably 20mins there is Wi-Fi in room but omg Download speed was 2 Mbps and it didn't even register uploading so don't expect to Skype or watch video , the noise is as you would expect in a city centre apart from ... Yes, the elevator is a bit of a thrill ride. No, the rooms are not spacious. However, for the price this is a great hotel in the Tenderloin, a neighborhood that is undergoing some gentrification, but is still gritty. The Edinburgh Castle pub is right down the street, a great hangout with cheap drinks. Several good restaurants lie down Polk Street. And definitely hit up Moulin Rouge for an old school breakfast.

This hotel is definitely not top notch. If you can book it cheap then it will provide you with a bed and a bathroom and cable TV. One thing that really pissed me off was that the wifi is extremely slow that it's almost impossible to use. So if you can book it cheap, good for you, if not, look for somewhere else.

Very reasonable price in an expensive city that often doesn't deserve its return, at least for hotels; helpful staff, functional and big rooms, flexible with room entry and requests, it was a smooth stay. Only knock is slightly rough neighborhood and older property - but the bed was comfortable, TV worked and all extra issues managed.
