This is a 400 years inn adapted to a today hotel. If you want to experience something new this is the place. Small rooms, with inclined walls, ceilings or floors but very clean. The cracking wooden floors are covered with carpets. Being an old inn to find the room you need to follow the signs. There are some places where you need to watch your head. The noise on the street starts somewhere at 6 am. Hotel has the curtesy to give you some ear plugs. The breakfast is basic. On the other hand the pe... Read more

Stayed here midweek. Had a really lovely room (320). The hotel is an old, quaint style. Great spacious room with dressing table and a nother table and chair which was handy for doing some work. Fab powerful shower, and to my delight as well as kettle, tea/coffee sachets I had a Nespresso machine. The breakfast was very good, wide selection of continental/ cold buffet and an option for cooked. My only real disappointment was the evening meal choice - there is an Indian restaurant on site, but veg... Read more

Situated slap bang in the very middle of Reading town centre the hotel is perfect for most things. Couple of hundred yards from the mainline train station and even less to John Lewis and a large M &S. subsidised parking is not so far away although you might want some help if there was a lot of it

My worst hotel experience in the last five years:-( A barely average hotel framed as a charming coaching inn on the Accor website. Really very disappointed, a complete waste of money:-( Specifics are hard to manage as almost everything about the room and the hotel itself was wrong (you name it: price, bed, room, breakfast, temperature, bathroom, service delivery ie breakfast hours or bar closing times). Positives: The staff made the best of it and were helpful and friendly. The room and public... Read more

Had lunch here recently and really must commend the Mercure for their excellent food and very relaxing surroundings. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. The menu had plenty to chose from and the prices were such good value for money. We both ordered the egg baguette which came with side salad and crispy fries and it was delicious. The quantity and quality of the food was top class and I would certainly eat here again and recommend.

It is apparently one of the oldest buildings in Reading, and from the outside you can believe that, it has lovely character to the external décor. Inside, the reception and restaurant are all fairly modern. As you would expect with older buildings, there are some low ceilings, uneven floors, and lots of random stair cases (no lift), but this comes with the age of the building. The rooms are fairly modernised, WiFi is in all the rooms, (I couldn't get it working but the signal strength was good)... Read more

Stayed for one night with work at the Mercure George Hotel which is in central Reading about 10' mins walk from the station at max. Had a twin room 214 which was clean and tidy. Room very quiet despite town being full of revellers. Bathroom a tad small and it was actually difficult to get in the shower between the sink and shower screen. Breakfast was extra so I went to Wetherspoons instead. Would stay again but not for a romantic weekend away. Receptionist very helpful when checking in.

I was travelling on business and made the mistake of travelling to Reading in Jun - Ascot week. I arrived in the hotel to find out it had no air-conditioning. And to make matters worse there was building works going on outside my room all of the first night. So I needed to open the window and got deafened - otherwise I would have cooked. The night from hell (well the temperature felt that way). If you ever need to go to Reading and the weather is hot then avoid this place like the plague. Awfu... Read more

I agree with other reviews on here, this hotel needs a refurbishment as it looks tired and dated. The reception staff were friendly and the room was ok but it looked tired. Comfy bed though. Good wifi
