This was our second trip to Secrets Akumal. We were there last year. This was our 23rd wedding anniversary. This was the perfect place to celebrate. This was our second trip to Secrets Akumal. We were there last year. This was our 23rd wedding anniversary. This was the perfect place to celebrate. If I had to choose one word to describe the property and the experience, it would be "elegant". The property is beautiful and well maintained. There is always a landscaper or groundskeeper in sight, cleaning or replacing foliage. It's spotless & it seldom feels crowded at all. The beach is beautiful. Rooms are very elegant with an emphasis on romance. The food ranges from very good to excellent. This being said, in reality, it's the staff who make or break a vacation, and at Secrets Akumal, the staff is simply outstanding. I'm not exaggerating. They are outstanding!!!!! Here's a category by category breakdown, with a 1 to 10 scale to keep it simple.
Check In - 10/10 - Warm, simple and easy with Antonio. We chose a "Preferred Club" room. I'll get back to the Preferred Club later in the review. Choosing this room moves check in from the lobby to the Preferred Club bar. Since we were return customers, familiar with this Secrets, we declined the tour of the property. We arrived at 12:30 & our rooms wasn't ready (3pm check in), so we changed into bathing suits and went to the Seaside Grill for lunch.
Rooms - 10/10 - Modern, elegant, clean, and romantic with a large whirlpool bath separated from the bed by see through white curtain, separate commode & oversized shower with frosted glass doors for privacy, and a second hot tub on the balcony.
Housekeeping - 10/10 - thanks to Javier. When we met him, he asked if there was anything he could do to make our stay better. He kept our room very clean and on our last day, we returned from the beach to find our bed decorated with a large heart shaped design of rose petals (see photo), with more rose petal accents, and our whirlpool bath filled with hot water & bubble bath, also decorated with rose petals. We know this took time!!!!! Thank you Javier. We are grateful.
Pools : 10/10 There are 3 large pools. All have floats. There is a pool bar in the one closet to the beach, where activities take place. The second, a little further back, is a little quieter. Two additional bars service these two pools. A third pool sits furthers from the ocean and is serenely quiet. Lounge chairs are in good supply. None of the 6am reservations is needed here. Elvis at the pool will deliver drinks if you don't want to leave the water or lounge chair.
Beach : 10/10 - Soft sand, crystal blue & green water, filled with sea life, turtles, sting rays, and many species of fish, all just off shore. "Amazing" is the only word to describe this. Snorkel equipment is free, there's plenty of lounge chairs, & a bar on the beach. David on the beach runs around moving chairs for guests to get optimal sun, gets people towels & bottled water, and even brought us fresh towels as we exited the ocean. Antonio & Abraham make sure you never need to leave your lounge chair for food and drinks. These guys are great.
Preferred Club - ?/10 - Can't rate this. My wife and I love it. Private check in, access to the Preferred Club Bar, a restaurant for A La Carte breakfast, upgraded room & amenities, more personal concierge service, and some spa access. My wife & I loved hitting the Preferred Club Bar for hors d'oeuvres and drinks before dinner. Sushi, chicken fingers, crab rolls, empanadas, mini desserts etc. Sergio & Abraham kept our drinks fresh and glasses full.
Restaurants : 10/10 - This is the most subjective category. I'm in the restaurant industry myself, but not difficult to please. I recognize "quality" food. I recognize "quality" in both preparation & presentation. I understand "quality" service. I understand I'm in Mexico, not the USA, and meat can be different. And all restaurants, even the best, have some meals they prepare better than others. All in all, the food in Secrets Akumal is very, very good, with some meals being down right excellent. I believe those who are really critical of the quality of food are just really difficult to please. Top shelf liquor is available at all bars. We ate breakfast at the Market Cafe (buffet) and Seaside Grill (a la carte). The crepes are a must!!!! Dinner was at Portofinos (Italian), Oceana (seafood), Seaside Grill (steakhouse), Himatsu (Japanese), and an outdoor grill night with "DIVO" as entertainment. Lunch every day was Seaside Grill, right by the pool, which has a great variety of food to offer. Grilled shrimp & sliced baked potato at Oceana were outstanding. I regret not getting the waiter's name. He was great. Himatsu was entertaining, and the food (filet & shrimp) was good. This was our least favorite. Seaside Grill for dinner was very, very good. My wife & I both had filet mignon. Hugo kept our glasses full and made certain we wanted for nothing. We had chicken parmesan & meat lasagna at Portofino's and though not like NYC Italian food, both were excellent. The house wine was good and Victor & Daniel provided impeccable service for out two meals here. The "grill" night was outstanding, with cuts of filet mignon, marinated garlic shrimp, sirloin steak, chorizo, chicken etc. We never went to the Market Cafe for the lunch buffet because the Seaside Grill for lunch is just too damn good. Shrimp cocktail, fried onion rings (really outstanding), caesar salads, for appetizers, flank steaks, grilled shrimp, shrimp tacos, fish tacos, grilled chicken cutlets (best I ever tasted), chocolate cake, lime sorbet (again, best I've ever tasted) for dessert, if you can fit dessert. So much food!!! I believe Jaime manages this restaurant. He's dressed differently than the waiters, and he works tirelessly at every task too keep this restaurant moving. Here's what's most amazing. The waiters, Jorge, Carlos, Delmar, Manuel, Jose, and bartenders Jairo & Ebersain, all knew our drinks by day two. Some remembered from last year. I ordered an 1800 Anejo on the rocks with 3 limes and two waiters turned around, smiled & said, "I remember you". Several came over and welcomed us back. These guys are worth their weight in gold. Their service surpasses excellent. I hope management values what these guys do for guests.
Concierge : 10/10 - We had Saul for one day and Jose afterwards. Both were great. Need a reservation at the spa or Himatu hibachi table? See your concierge. Want something left in your room on a specific day and time? See you concierge. Jose took care of everything in Building 3.
Entertainment : 9 or 10/10 - We saw DIVO (we call it The 3 Mexican Tenors) and it was fantastic. We were really impressed. We saw "The Beatles" show, also excellent, "Elvis" (very good), Jersey Boys (very good) and "The Circus Show", also very good. A lot of the same people are involved in various late night shows. All are extremely talented and made for great entertainment overall. Our two favorites were "Beatles" and DEVO.
Service - If I could rate this area higher than a 10/10, I would, and I mean that sincerely. From check in to check out, everyone working at Secrets Akumal is pleasant, polite, accommodating, friendly, professional, and will go out of their way to please the guests. Every request is met with "it's a pleasure sir". While food, entertainment and accommodations are important, it's this truly outstanding level of service that takes Secrets Akumal to a higher level and makes a vacation here so special.
One last thing : Integrity - My wife & I were snorkeling when a thunderstorm rolled in. We ran back to our lounge chairs, grabbed our beach bag, eye glasses, clothing and ran to a restaurant. The next day we discovered we left our iPad tablet in the towels on the lounge chair. We went and found David the next day, who amazingly recovered the device. David, we cannot thank you enough. Your honesty and integrity are only equally by your outstanding level of service.
Tipping : No one asks. No one expects. But these people deserve it. They work tirelessly, and always maintain a smile and pleasant demeanor, even when dealing with the occasional rude guest. We tip, generously, but not crazy. If it effects the level of service, I don't know. If it does, it's subtle, not obvious.
Overall : I rate Secrets Akumal a 10/10 overall. I've been to Sandals, Sun Place, Moon Palace, Cancun Palace, Royal Solaris, Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancun. None compare. In my opinion, Secrets Akumal crushes these other hotels with respect to quality & service. Our visit to Secrets Maroma Beach was a close second to Akumal Bay. We sincerely hope to return next year.
