Stayed a couple of nights, nice clean and quiet room, interesting Japanese garden in the lobby. Good location, easy walking distance to attractions. Wonderful Japanese breakfast, well worth the extra price.

The five star rating is not to imply this is the most luxurious place on the planet. It is that Nishiyama Ryokan excellently accomplishes what it sets out to do and an appropriate price point. First and foremost the Nishiyama family and staff are most friendly, helpful and gracious. Our room was a typical Japanese ryokan style room in a newer building (that is to say not an old house). Room was not large, but amply-sized that did not feel monastic. Japanese style breakfast was tasty and varie... Read more

The staff was so kind and helpful, they explained everything about the Ryokan, even details about the room amenities. The japanese style breakfast was magnificent! If you are going with someone that is not very fond of japanese food, there is western style breakfast available. As for the futons, I was afraid that they would not be very confortable, but I was surprised it was soft and cosy. The only thing that was not as I had expected was the onsen, it was very small, only 2 people can enter at ... Read more

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was a very good experience. It is not a high end Ryoakan nor a hotel. But a very nice Ryokan. We enjoyed our stay very much, the service and hospitality was fantastic. We had our entire family here and everyone enjoyed themselves.

This hotel is well- worth the cost. The staff are indescribably kind and helpful and take time to graciously show you around your room and the rest of the hotel. Everything was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was a little cramped, but the public bath was lovely with a great view. We were treated to a traditional tea ceremony on the morning of our stay and were given cups of tea when we arrived to check in. The hotel is really lovely and my travel companion and I agree it was a shame we could... Read more

Breakfast was fully booked so u have to prebook it before your stay. Concierge helped us booked a popular restaurant during our stay. Overall experience was good! A tip to share, check out earlier because the ryokan has 1 small lift to share and it will be busy before check out timing

Great location :very close to the subway and shopping. The rooms are decent and the public bath was a special treat. We enjoyed the Japanese breakfast served us and the tea ceremony was a pleasant surprise. Would love to come and stay again in this ryokan and would recommend this place to family and friends who are visiting Kyoto.

The staff at NIshiyama Ryokan are certainly the pride of the organization! They were incredibly welcoming and helpful; they went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed during the trip, and encouraged us to experience the traditional Japanese activities available at the Ryokan. We had breakfast there 3 times - the traditional Japanese breakfast was delicious, and each day was different, definitely a great value! We had dinner at the Ryokan once - while it was a fun experience, ... Read more

I am so glad I stayed here, and wish I booked more nights here. It was beyond perfect! The staff were beyond exceptional, the room was so comfortable. The bed was so comfy and i had the best sleep every in a very quiet room. Couldn't hear a thing from any other guests! This was easily my best hotel experience in the world, and for such a low price. I only wanted a room to sleep and shower so i could explore, but they made it so hard for me to leave my ryokan! It was so relaxing and peaceful. I w... Read more

This was one of my favorite places to stay, ever. It is in a quiet, chic location in Kyoto, away from the throngs of tourists, but a 10 minute walk to a couple of different train lines and walking distance to the Gion. The room was spotlessly clean and well decorated. Breakfast was totally over the top -- different every day for the three days I stayed there. Relaxing onsen downstairs, which I had to myself every time I went down there. The staff was also extremely courteous and helpful. All i... Read more
