When we arrived at Locanda di San Martino, it was beyond reality. We could not believe a hotel was carved into stone walls known Sasses. The rooms were not stuffy as we had a window for fresh exchange and the view at night was beautiful. The hotel captured the essence of Matera. Be sure to dine at Soul Kitchen as the food was incredible.

This is one of the budget cave hotels in Matera and you get what you pay for. The 'cave' experience depends on the room you get but even then I think there are more authentic looking rooms in other properties (but based on our research they were more expensive as well.) The rooms have been modernised quite a bit and that shows. The best part about this hotel is definitely the Spa. At 20 euros per person, we had access to a beautiful and warm underwater lagoon which was a boon in the cold weath... Read more

Locanda di San Martino is located in the middle of the historical district. Each cave dwelling has been modernized and updated with modern amenities but still maintains the cave feel. Each room is different and varying in size depending on how far back the original cave dwelling sat back in to the rock. My bathroom had a shower (no tub), hair dryer, towel warmer, bidet, shampoo, lotion and soap. The room had a tiny window which opened. The entry door was like a barn door where the top had a... The Hotel has a distinguished feature to have impressive Spa within real tunnels of tufa rocks... it is really impressive!!!! Also the breakfast service with Piano being Played was really classy!!! At the same time I picked up a room in the underground which really provided the feeling to stay in a cellar rather than in a hotel.... claustrophobic! Also on a managerial perspective i had the view that the staff was not entirely sufficient to accomodate the needs of an almost fully booked hotel.... Read more

Wonderful family room. Impeccable and spacious. Kids loved to run in the stairs around the hotel and they loved the jet tub. Then, we enjoyed nice wine on our deck overlooking amazing Matera. The roman bath were very nice, although a bit crowded, make sure to reserve your spot if you want to soak in these special caves. Breakfast was a feast.

The spa looks just like the picture! Beautiful warm water and in a cave! What more can you want? We had a lovely room, also into a cave, and fantastic breakfast. Staff couldn't do more, even opening the spa early as we had to leave the hotel after breakfast.

We stayed here with a group tour and absolutely loved it. Our room was the Cisterna, I believe #4, and it was wonderful. Very large room up a few steps from the entrance and next door to the breakfast room yet quiet. Our room had an old cisterna in the floor covered with glass or plexiglass. There was lighting in the cisterna that we could turn on which created a nice glow in our room. We did not take advantage of the Thermae but several people in our group thoroughly enjoyed this experience... Read more

Please go. Yes, it's spendy. It's simply perfect in every way. The staff work very hard to see that your every need is met. And the location could not be better. Tricky to find initially, but seriously, the Sassi district is a tough go for a non-local at best. Make the effort, it's def. worth it.

We booked this hotel because it was set in a cave and knew nothing about location or the area. The hotel was not too difficult to find (with a satnav!) and on arrival they parked our car in a nearby parking garage (10 Euros per day) - we did not need the car for the rest of the stay. The hotel is near the Palazzo Vittorio Veneto, there are some stairs leading to the square, and everything is within walking distance. There are stairs everywhere, lots of them, so take good walking shoes! The hote... Read more

Locanda San Martino is a well located hotel in the Sassi di Matera historical center of town. This part of town is a stark contrast to the more modern town of Matera. The city was thought to be founded by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. The Sassi (stones) were dwellings dug into the rock itself, and in some parts of the Sassi streets lie on top of another group of dwellings. The ancient town grew up on one slope of the rocky ravine created by the Gravina River. In the 1950s, the government of ... Read more
