I went to Roatan this time for the stem cell procedure on my knees and arms at the GARM clinic.Since their office and procedure room is at Parrot Tree, this was the best place to stay. My husband was going to go with me, but he broke his pelvis and was in too much pain and had to stay at home. I was in Room 909 which is on the third floor of unit 9 and which has only four steps and then an elevator. The room was really lovely and the location was very quiet since it was a longer walk to La Palapa restaurant, the only restaurant on site. It also has a really nice view of the grounds from the balcony and a nice view of the end of the swimming pool from the front walkway.
I requested a room with shower only since with me arthritic knee problem I would not have been able to use a jacuzzi tub anyway. This room with a shower, two lavatory sinks, and a separate small room with toilet was perfect for my needs. The king sized bed was comfortable and not so high that I could not get into it with my short legs.
The kitchen was just the right size with a large refrigerator, and the counter space was sufficient. Be sure to bring your own dish washing soap, as it and paper towels and dish washing sponge and didh towels are not furnished. The room had no oven or automatic dish washer, but that was fine with me. It did lack a safe and a phone which would have been useful.
La Palapa Bar and Grill was a very nice setting for meals. The breakfast choices that come with your stay are pancakes or French toast, fruit, and fruit drink and I guess coffee which I do not drink or a scrambled egg, refried beans, cheese, toast, butter, fruit, and drink plate which is the best choice. Christian, the manager, said that they are planning to offer more choices for the complimentary breakfast in the future. The kitchen staff workers were all very nice, especially Narissa, who served my breakfast in the morning. The only other meal that I had at La Palapa was the Churasco steak which was good, but not exceptional. The Monkey La La drink was very good.
The weather was not that good since it was rainy season. The two days that I had to use the pool before my procedure were rainy and cloudy. The first day, I used the pool anyway, but the second day was more rain and lightning and thunder so I did not get to use it. The only really pretty day was after the procedure so I sat by the pool with my feet in the water, but did not get my knees and upwards wet. This is one of the prettiest pools I have seen on Roatan, and it has water at all levels for water aerobics and enjoyment plus the slide. I only wish that I could have used it more often.
The one downside was the isolation. I had the services of our guide Channin Bodden who is like family since we have known him for so long, and have used him many times in the past, and the services of Dioxi Martinez who works with the GARM clinic for transport back and forth to the clinic which is on site, but a little far to walk on bad knees. But still, it is a long way from other eating places and from the main attractions of the Island and to properly enjoy your stay if you want freedom of movement, you have to rent a car. I had seen and done most of what I wanted to of what Roatan has to offer, and I was there for a stem cell treatment of my knees and shoulder, so I was all right without a car, but others probably would not be. As mentioned in other reviews, this resort is best for peace and quiet, and since this was low season, there were few activities, if any, available. You can book excursions through the office I think, but I did not use this service.
There were a few minor problems that occurred with the room, but Christian, the manager always took care of them immediately so that they were no inconvenience. The worst was when the elevator did not work, probably from a breaker problem with the storm, but he called the man with the elevator key and he got that working in about 15 minutes. I think he said that was the only time that has ever happened.
Since the weather was cool, rainy, and windy, I did not use the lagoon or try snorkeling so I cannot comment on those. In my opinion, the only down side is the isolation of the resort, but for many that would be a plus. I really did enjoy my stay, and it was the best choice for my purpose which was healing with the GARM clinic.
