I had to be out of town for a meeting so I went online searching for hotels nearest the session. This location came up on a price search so I called the location to make my reservation so I could ask for a few specifics like ground floor on the front side of the building. The on-duty clerk, let's call them "T", advised me to book online for the best discounted rate then call back to confirm the special requirements. That's one point on a 100-point scale. I did my reservation online, called "T" back and was assured all was well and ready and done and absolutely taken care of. Time came for the stay, I arrived around 4 p.m., the person on the desk, we'll call them "A" (who was later identified as actually being the manager ... more on that as we wrap up) said I had a reservation but contrary to all the assurances from "T" there was NO ground floor, NO elevator and NO front side. I was put in 219. Upstairs. Around back. Take it or leave it (prepaid in full so no refunds were even allowed ... something about their policy?) So much for promises. Now let's talk about the room. I tried to turn the tv on ... nothing. The batteries had been stolen from the remote. I opened the fridge to put my meds in to store them properly but it was non-operational (more in a moment.) I called "A" and was told she'd call "the maintenance dude." 30 minutes later, I called her again. She said she'd call him again and he arrived 5 minutes later. Really nice guy, conversational, quite helpful. He deserves a much nicer place to work, in my own opinion. After installing batteries in the remote, the tv still didn't work. He had to tinker with the wires, the box, the connection, the settings. Finally it worked (I think the gremlins gave in to him, never did get his name but he was helpful and I appreciate him.) The on-screen fail had been "no signal" .. that happened again later after he had left, and I went to get food and stupidly turned off the tv ... when I tried to turn it on again .. yep, "no signal." (I gave up on having a tv to watch for the remainder of the stay (forturnately had a paperback with me!) Meantime, back to "the maintenance dude" I mentioned the fridge to him and he was more than a bit taken aback by the 2 inches of frost all around in the freezer compartment and the non-op fridge. He removed it and took it away to fix and brought it back operational. He saved my expensive meds. Thanks again! Now, the rest of the room. For being a nonsmoking location, there were cigarette stains in the bathroom sink counter (which was cracked and hadn't been properly repaired), and on the bathtub ledge, the wooden furniture was all aging badly and hadn't been well cleaned or cared for and stained or dirty, the recliner chair was overdue for replacement because when I sat in it, the right side had a pronounced sag that made it uncomfortable to sit in. I tried to plug my charger into the electrical socket behind the nightstand next to the bed but it was badly damaged and unrepaired. The lamp was plugged in but none too securely. I chose another outlet that didn't look quite so out of fire code. Another outlet, nearest the door to the room was also in disrepair and needed proper attention, also. The website for America's Best Value Inns noted that every room also had an iron (it helps to show up in a well-pressed shirt, as you know.) Not so much. No iron ... (goes well with no tv, don't you think?) The bathroom cabinetry doors were marred with white and blue paint, or something, in spots of 1-3 inches (just kind of unsightly). The final observation was a silver vehicle, a late-model import with neighboring state plates parked in the "don't park here spot with all the bright yellow diagonal lines" (the spot where emergency services people might need if such occasion arose.) I packed my things in my car and pulled around the building to check out. The young lady on the desk (the only other shining spot of the stay) unfortunately asked if my stay had been good. I proceeded to tell her of the many things I observed and asked if the GM or owner was on hand. Nope, neither one, but she'd be happy to tell them both of my concerns. That's when I learned that the person above (called "A") was the manager. I told her about the silver car blatantly occupying the "don't park here" slot. She apologized and said that was the owner's vehicle. But I thought the owner wasn't here, as I had been told. "Well, you know..." Aha moment. OK, I get it ... their car is here, but not the owner. Interesting. Last but not least, is the location. Being a traveler unfamiliar with the area, I figured out quickly that this location wasn't exactly in the finest neighborhood in the ZIP code. I felt unsafe and insecure the entire time I was there. I'll never stay at this ABVI location again (or likely any other, for that matter.) OMG and I almost forgot this special note while checking in ... they demand and scan your credit card and your driver's license! "Our policy, in case of incidentals and whatever" said "A". I asked "A" what those might be, and she said in case an occupant smoked, or whatever. I told her she was demanding the things that hackers and identity thieves need to wreck and ruin people's lives! Again, "our policy." I was left with a choice ... leave it (and no refund) or surrender and comply or have to find another place and pay again. I told the polite lady at the checkout desk that the 4 of 5 TripAdvisor 2015 rating certificate hanging on their wall was not my experience and that she could tell both the owner and the manager of everything I had told her about. You see, I had shown her the pictures I took with my phone of every single shortcoming described above. I'll make them available to TA from my cloud. (These reviews offer space for one photo ... I took many!) If your lodging choices are this location or your car ... park in a superstore parking lot and sleep in your back seat. Never going to stay here again. Never!
