First this is a historical building with the subsequent issues and it's San Antonio in April so the rooms can be a bit difficult to cool, but the rooms are clean and beds comfortable. My family is from San Antonio and decided to spend the weekend downtown for a birthday. What made the visit outstanding was the staff at the hotel. Everyone from the front desk to the cleaning staff was warm welcoming and friendly. They bent over backwards to make our stay pleasant and fun. My family does a ... Read more

Had no idea it use to be the jail and was built in the 1800s.....lot of history about the place but the rooms are modern with high ceilings. Staff is excellent!!! It's within walking distance of the Market Square but the 9 blocks to the Alamo area was too much for older folks. Stay here, it's fun

We stayed at the old Bexar County Jail that Holiday Inn Express has renovated into a hotel in downtown San Antonio, Texas near the Riverwalk...the fact that it was an old jail was a drawing point for something different besides the fact that it was $100 cheaper than the normal Holiday Inn Express nearby...the staff was very friendly and accommodating (especially Yvonne), breakfast was great, and the bed was comfortable...our room was surprisingly very large with high ceilings...we loved it...ev... Had rooms available the same night of booking...fantastic front desk staff...and the room was great! Had some construction going on, but management had great concessions for the inconvenience. Would definitely visit again!!

Bevare of getting a room that somebody checked in before you and moved out from because of a not working AC, refriguator or toilet. And not cleaned! Be sure they dont overcharge you if if you show a fixed price from a booking you have. The hotel charge 10USD for parking in an unprotected spot. There a lot of placed you can park your car for 5USD / 24 hours everywhere. Staff at frontdesk are rude and ingnorant! Avoid this hotel! There are many nicer hotels around.

I booked this room online for two reasons: it was a Holiday Inn and it was advertised as being within walkable distance from the river walk. I expected the hotel to be up to the usual Holiday Inn standards and this hotel was not. We walked into our room and found a huge burn on the carpet, someone had dropped an iron at one time, I assume. The walls in the room were in desperate need of painting, they were scuffed and marked and looked dingy. The trim on the closet and on the refrigerator c... Read more

Nice, comfortable beds. My only issue is that this is a historic building and air conditioning is a big portable unit hung on wall about 7 ft up. It blows right on both beds. It may be different in another room. Breakfast has lots of options.

Picked this hotel because it was close to the Children's Hospital - my son had an appointment on Monday and we though we'd make a weekend of it. As we drove by my son commented that it looked like a jail. Surprise! It used to be a jail, the Bexar County Jail. They actually had hangings on the second floor. It is a historical building, but the room was comfortable enough. The pool was virtually non existent- tiny. The first night went without incident but the problem started the next day. Whe... We had a lovely time at this Holiday Inn. I'm a rewards member, so I always look for Holiday Inns when I travel. This one is about 5 blocks north of the Holiday Inn that's on the Riverwalk, making it 100s of dollars less and including breakfast. For the price difference, I'll walk to the riverwalk each day. The staff was very friendly and professional, and the rooms were big. The breakfast space was a little crowed, and you do have to pay for parking - but it's only $10/day, which for me seemed ... The staff was very helpful and the walk wasn't to far to get to the Alamo area and that seemed to be were most of the stuff was. Most of the stores real close were closed. There is a bus stop half a block away if you don't want to walk. The only problems we had were that the breakfast area wasn't big enough for the number of people eating there, the air conditioner blew right on the bed and couldn't be turn another direction, there is only one handicapped parking spot on site and one half a... Excellent location (walking distance from Riverwalk and main attractions). Clean, good internet speed, very good fast breakfast. Definitely going back if again in San Antonio. The shuttle service is really convenient and parking is included.

My wife booked this for our trip to the Riverwalk and when we drove up I had my doubts. It's an old historic building that was once the Bexar county jail. There was nowhere to park (or so it seemed). First impressions aside, the staff was very friendly, the place was full of families, the rooms were pretty nice. It's close enough to the Riverwalk you can walk or easily catch a trolly. The only knock I have is that the breakfast area is too small beginning around 8:30 or so when everyone starts u... Read more

We came down to San Antonio to take our Daughter to Sea World and also enjoy the Riverwalk area. We enjoyed the history behind the building and how the staff seemed to enjoy it too! The hotel was clean, organized. Staff were super friendly! I'm with all the other reviewers on the breakfast area. We couldn't find a table because that space is so small and we even waited awhile, finally we decided to head out and find breakfast somewhere else. Otherwise, we'd stay here again! The beds were comfort... Read more

We stayed one night on our drive back to Dallas from South Padre Island. We chose this hotel due it price and proximity to the Riverwalk. Being from Dallas we are huge Dallas Cowboys fans and a pre-season game was showing the night of our stay. Although we've visited San Antonio several times we were unsure of where to watch the game that was also kid friendly (2 & 6 yr old boys) so we decided we would ask the front desk for help. Mariah was very helpful and friendly and quickly found us a place... Read more

We didn't know about the hotel's history until we arrived. Very interesting! The hotel is ok for its age, but the parking situation is horrible. Although we paid the hotel to park, there are not many parking spaces in their parking lot. It was very hectic trying to get all of our items across the street and up the stairs to the entrance, while hanging on to a 2 year old. Also we had to call the front desk a few times because the room had a weird odor and the latch on the room door was broken. ... Read more

We had a rather ordinary overnight stay at the Holiday Inn Express N-Riverwalk made EXTRAORDINARY by the service of your breakfast staff, Yvonne. She was VERY warm, friendly, helpful & witty, not to mention going completely out of her way to assist us with things totally unrelated to breakfast service. She was a joy and made our stay one to remember.

I booked this place thinking I got the Holiday Inn Express closer to the River walk, this one was only 2 blocks away not to bad. it was a great place, What I didn't know was that it used to be an old jail in the 1800's apparently on the 3rd floor it was where the execution was being done. Very interesting. I liked how they kept the place in the remembrance to the theme. Windows with bars, the building kept its original structure. It was a great experience. Love and want to support efforts to preserve historic buildings, particularly when open to the public. Preserving this former City Jail is a great example. Very well done! Couple short blocks from the Riverwalk, historic church with remains of Alamo hero's, reasonably priced, nice rooms, friendly staff ... but other than that ..... I've stayed a couple of times and hope to many more times.

Overall the hotel was OK, primarily due to the history of being built in 1878 as the county jail. I wasn't aware of the history when I booked. The biggest problem was the strong musty odor in my room. If I had read other reviews before I booked I would have been aware. I had to unplug the mini-refrigerator in my room due to the loud ticking noise it was making (sounded like an old wind up alarm clock). I stayed there while traveling on business but I did walk to the market square area for a ni... Read more

We arrived on a Friday afternoon and stayed in room 407. Commerce Street was packed and we had to call the hotel to figure out where to park, since they only have around 70 spots "reserved" for the hotel. There are signs in the lot across the street that say the lot is strictly enforced but there were numerous cars without the hang tags that you're given when you check in. It seemed to be mostly a public parking lot despite the signs. The good news is that we found the last spot available when ... Read more

I've stayed at many Holiday Inn Express properties and hotels of different star ratings and a bed is ultimately just a bed. What makes the difference is the energy of the staff. There is a lovely lady looking after breakfast but other than her no other staff made this stay memorable. Checkin was bland and unfriendly. This included no recognition as a tiered IHG member (which is a scripted requirement). The location of the property provides easy assess to the Riverside and at a great rate.

Nice and clean place. Nothing fancy - but at the same time it isn't ordinary. Staff crew Cory, Misty n others were cordial and helpful. Lobby is bit congested - but room isn't. Proximity to SwRI n some shopping spots is plus.

The staff were most professional, proficient, and executed an excellent job of bringing the utmost comfort to me and my husband for our honeymoon. They were friendly and eager to be of help in all things. The pool and weight room were resourceful, although small. Other than that, all of our needs for traveling were met with fast & friendly service, clean rooms, excellent breakfast service, and security. I wouldn't have chosen anywhere else! We stayed 3 nights and liked the hotel so much we booked a 4th! Roger, Tina and the rest of the front desk staff were very friendly and helpful during our visit to the city. The rooms were clean, a bit musty smelling at first but the hotel is over 200 years old! A heated pool and hot tub would be an improvement as they are outside. Yvonne and the other breakfast attendants were awesome. Quiet, off the beaten path but very close to the Riverwalk. Would definitely stay again!!
