This was a great hotel in the 60's when it was built - the Rolling Stones stayed here. It is now a bit beyond its prime. The rooms have been updated, but are still a little worn. Oversized King bed. Internet is an adventure. OK breakfast buffet, but otherwise no restaurant. Coffee bar with limited snacks. Marginal bar with limited hours. Try to get a room on the back overlooking the river - very quiet. We were there for my wife's HS reunion so got a group rate - it was worth that price. ... Read more

The hotel is across from the river walk which was a nice walk to restaurants and shops. The room was clean and in good condition. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Breakfast was buffet but not included with our room. Street car stops right in front of hotel, cheap transportation (get a day pass) and is the best way to see the city. Would stay here again.

The hotel and hotel staff were great. The room we had was not great. The mattresses were sagging and hard and we had to ask to get more soap and shampoo each day. There was a stain on our top sheet that even though we asked for the sheets to be washed, it was just put back on top each day (we put the sheet on the floor rather than using it).

We got a good deal for our stay at the El Tropicano through a travel website. The location was great, as I wanted to be on the Riverwalk, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle that we could relax in peace and quiet at the end of the night. The hotel was probably amazing when it was first built. The lobby is nice, breakfast buffet is superb. The pool does NOT compare to the photos online. The pics make the pool area look huge when infact, it is small, with the shallowest part of the pool... Read more

The nicest thing I can say is the staff were friendly and helpful and breakfast was good. It's near the Pearl Brewery area not a far drive. Must see that. The room was questionable on cleanliness. It smelled old and musty, it felt like I was in a cheap motel. In the middle of the night, I woke up in the middle of the night to a smell of rubber burning or a tar chemical smell. The beds lumpy and pillow small. This place is just not kept up and can use a make over. The only area that looks nice ... Read more

After a long day of contemporary flight travel, landing at the "El Trop" was like falling into a floating pool chair with a mojito in one hand a fine quality cigar in the other. Despite the humid San Antonio weather which greeted my wife and I, the El Tropicana Riverwalk hotel was the perfect setting and comfort level to start our exploration of one of Texas' finest cities. Room was clean. Breakfast good. Nasty birds in filthy cage in the hall. When they say Riverwalk - yes the river is beneath it, however, it's nature only. You have to take a trolley across the street to get to the real Riverwalk with shops and restaurants. You get what you pay for.

The architects of this building reflects its origins from the 50s. Is not a fancy place, but the location is perfect for tourists who are coming for the first time because it's in Downtown San Antonio, next to Tobin Center and San Antonio Riverwalk.

Upon arrival we got our key pretty quickly and went into a room that was very nice and cold!! At this point we are happy! We changed and went to the pool where the disappointment started! Location is about 1/2 mile from main river walk facilities, but the start of the river is right across the street, where very clam and nice for a night walk or morning run. The room was Very nice in size, furniture was well cared for, but the floor near the window was un even, restroom door would not close completely, also believe the maid left one of her nails behind, and there was a couple of holes on the shower curtain. However for the price it was very pleasant, happy with the stay.

This hotel needs a LOT of updating. The bathrooms were not clean and there is NO counter space in the bathroom. The hallways are dark and there are a lot of unmarked doors that are not locked and looked unkept. The lobby is nice, but the rest of the hotel leaves a lot to desire. I paid a discount rate of $130 and I can't imagine paying a penny more.

My husband, two kids (ages 5 and 1) and myself loved this hotel. Pool is really cool. Main Riverwalk area is a 15 minute walk or you can get a river taxi which is what we did. Let me start by saying we have stayed here three years in a roll . The staff is so unbelievably friendly and helpful and fun. The hotel is old and on our first visit 4 years ago it was so clean and great. Then slowly gone down hill each year. We picked this on at first because it's charming. it's retro. I am staying here for a conference I attend twice a year. Usually we stay in hotels that cost 2-3 times what El Tropicano costs. So there has been a lot of quiet grumbling. El Tropicano is old and a bit shabby; it's noisy and full of kids and families and young people; the food is mediocre and the conference facilities are second rate. It is the worst value I've ever received in a hotel and I travel several times per month. $300 per night for a room that would be worth $70 at most. The staff are totally sweet and friendly. I loved having a room with a sliding door that opened out into the courtyard and the pool. It's the kind of hotel that makes you feel like you're on a great vacation.

This is my second stay at this hotel and the first time I was wowed! This time not so much. It is such a beautiful hotel with an awesome location and yes the pricing from this time was great but the hotel needs to be upgraded. The rooms were humid and there was a moist smell. If you turned off the AC it was hot and it you turned it on it was freezing there was no in-between. The bedding felt lumpy and used and the carpet felt icky. The bathroom was also humid, condensation would appear in a... Read more

I strongly recommend you not to purchase this hotel. I bought it through groupon thinking it was a good price and the reviews weren't too bad. That was a joke. And now I'm fighting to get my money back because I didn't stay at the hotel due to it not being cleaning and the room I got was very small. You could barely walk around the bed. The shower was smaller then the shower in my trailer traveler. The place wasn't very clean and had a moldy smell. The staff was polite which was the only good fe... Read more

The Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel was such a nice and pleasant stay. I was given the opportunity to stay here as I was given a discounted rate for renting the VFW Post 76 for my retirement party. The staff I encountered was friendly and courteous but my favorite professional person to mention was Theresa Lucas who I believe is the Sales Manager. From the moment I met her; I was met by a person who was genuinely warm and attentive to this important event in my life. I can't say enough good things... Read more

We stayed 3 nights, from 9-29 through 10-2. We arrived very late around 2AM due to getting stuck in Dallas and Audtin, but the front desk staff was very accomodating in holding our rooms and check in went surprisingly smooth for that time of night. I immediatly fell in love with the atmosphere upon walkig into the lobby. The masks on the wall and general decor is awesome. We stay in this hotel because of its claim that it was in the riverwalk, I would like to warn everyone don't stay here if you expect to walk to the Alamo or to the shops and restaurants, we tried to walk but after 20mins we gave up and took a trolley instead. Besides the distance to those places, the hotel was on, had a var area and a band was playing in the waiting area. Parking is limited so when we got back to the hotel around 12 at night, their was no more parking, had to valet car for an ex... Read more

One of the big negatives of this hotel is that it is very dated throughout. To their credit, they have updated some floors and we were fortunate enough to enjoy one of these updated rooms for one night. Let me explain: the first night we arrived, we were accommodated in a room on the pool level. The room itself did not feel fresh, but I digress. Right outside the room (on the pool side) there was a small patio area that was littered with cigarette butts. Next, the tub fixture was broken. I could... Read more

We were a large group, my husband's ship buddies that spanned over 40 years. El Tropicano was welcoming as we had a Hospitality Room for home base for quick meetings and meals, snacks. Their Bar set up was great when we had an open bar. The rooms were clean and the air conditioner worked! Overall what impressed me was the staff. From the housekeepers to the breakfast buffet crew were attentive and pleasant. Elana? and Mattsimo in the buffet so pleasant. The bar area was in a great spot for a q... Read more

This hotel was right on public trans route, the city changed route and no longer has bus service nearby. Quite a walk to main portion of riverwalk. The front desk wasn't very helpful. Valet was helpful and got our vehicle so we wouldn't have to walk about a mile. Had to find public parking and wasn't a problem. Public trans was the main reason we stayed previously at this hotel. I recently had the pleasure of staying at the El Tropicano for a reunion with a group of my college classmates. I found the hotel to be very accommodating to us during our stay. The rooms were spacious and very clean. There was ample room in the lobby area for us to meet up with our group and for us to just sit around to have a drink or just relax. The staff was always pleasant and willing to help. The trolley stop was right outside the front door and cabs were available and quick to respond. It... Read more

Spacious lobby with nice tiki bar and friendly bartender. Hotel known for LBJ in the 1960s. A bit isolated, and loud noises from Riverwalk and poolside partying late at night. Good exercise facility! Felt unsafe to walk on Riverwalk, no shops or restaurants nearby. Lack of effective security at the hotel in general.

We stayed here for the second time in 6 months because it is a pleasant quiet property, still on the Riverwalk in the Museum Reach area, but away from the crowds of the restaurants/bars area. The more "touristy" area is easily accessible if you like to walk. We've stayed in the same suite both times. Our room was very comfortable and clean, with a separate living area, kitchen area, bedroom, and bathroom. The suite was furnished with 2 televisions, 2 air conditioner units, a fridge, microwav... Before reserving this hotel i should of researched it more, esp. since it was not near anything on the riverwalk. If you dont mind walking quite a ways walk to the restaurants on the riverwalk, or taking a scenic boat ride taxi to the main restaurants on the riverwalk this would be an ok hotel to stay at. Our room was nice, and had a nice view of the pool, but you can tell this is an older hotel. We probably would not stay here again, considering it is off the beating path. Although if you want ... This hotel had major problems. Coming in off Highway 10, I called three times for directions. Each time I was transferred, the third time, I was transferred to a line that nobody answered. I finally had to go to another hotel to get directions. When we checked out, the guy who sponsored our trip was given the bill for the wrong room. The rooms were smaller than expected, and breakfast was over priced and not very good.
