Great downtown location! The bar at the top of the hotel offers a great view of Rapid City and the surrounding area. Madi and Maggie at the front desk did a good job. The front desk had 1/2 off an appetizer at the Firehouse Brewing Company. It's a great place to eat! There is a Starbucks in the hotel.

The location is great and the bed was comfortable. We enjoyed walking around town for an evening before sleeping fairly early because of an early morning flight. Our room was recently refurbished so it was clean and comfortable. But, it only had two small frosted windows. The hotel offers an airport shuttle which helped with our early morning flight. The downtown location is much better than staying at one of the highway hotels.

The downtown location of this hotel is its best feature and it has many dining options close by. The architecture, particularly in the lobby area, is quite fascinating and we were aware of the building's heritage value. However, our stay here was quite disappointing. Our room was hot and noisy and had a view of a large roof. The one window was covered by an old Venetian blind in need of replacement. The curtains could not be drawn because the air conditioner was under the window. We were woken v... Read more

We arrived around midnight and the bellman Andrew was very helpful. He helped us find a street parking spot and carried our many bags to the room. We received an upgrade to a family suite, which consisted of one bathroom and two bedrooms: one with a kind and one with a queen. The room was very nice, and the views from the 6th floor were great. Our only complaint is that despite arriving late and having two small children (who needed to nap around noon), we were not granted a late check-out. Be s... Read more

This boutique hotel is in the process of being refurbished by Hilton but even as-is it is worth the price for the physical plant and great history. What puts it over the top is the service we received from virtually every staff member that we had an interaction with. I am a Hilton Diamond traveler, so I have had plenty of interactions over the years and the Alex Johnson staff is simply a cut above. While all of the staff was excellent, I want to draw attention to three of the valets, Sam, And... Read more

Such a cool hotel, outside looked old but the inside had a historic feel making you feel like you're in the old west. We had a great room, newly renovated I'd say. Location was perfect, valet was easy. In fact because there was Rapid City's summer Thursday night festival the hotel offered valet parking for free. In a day in age where everyone is nickel and dimed, this was very cool. It was pet friendly as well, which suited us perfectly.

Staff was very friendly and rooms were clean, but...lacking amenities and parking is a pain. Either park at top of parking structure or take a gamble at finding street parking (or pay $15 valet). Hotel is located near some nice restaurants but we did not feel safe walking around with our young family. Also, didn't know this hotel is supposedly haunted until we left. We did have a knock at the door (room 409) in the evening but nobody was in the hall, we assumed prank...but maybe it was a ghostly... Read more

This is a historic hotel. We had a large king room. It was nice and spacious. The hotel has a Starbucks attached. There is a roof top bar. But the service is slow because the kitchen is on the second floor We enjoyed our stay. The elevators are slow. There are a few good restaurants close by. Downtown rapid city also has statues of all presidents on every corner. We enjoyed our stay and used this as our base for visiting Mt Rushmore, the badlands and Custer.

At the Hotel Alex Johnson their where many activities to do at your stay. One of them was a ghost tour that told us more about the hotels haunting. The tour guide,Sam, who went out of his way to show us the Hotel gave us a great time at our visit. When you make your visit be sure to ask for the valet,Sam, who made my stay better than I thought it would.

This hotel is old and maybe historical, but not what I would call a Luxery hotel. No water pressure in the shower, hot water took forever to reach the room. Irish Pub was severely understaffed on the 4th of July, we walked out after 10 minutes of not being greeted. There was only one bartender and he could barely keep up with the people seated at the bar. The only place we received up scale service was at the roof top venue.

When looking for a hotel in Rapid City to use a a base for our South Dakota tour, I decided to book the Hotel Alex Johnson mainly due to its downtown location, and its placement on the 'Curio Collection'. Since I had never stayed at a Curio collection hotel in the past, I was not sure what this really stood for. In my mind, I suppose I expected it to be a similar concept to the 'Luxury Collection' of Starwood properties which converts old historic hotels into luxury hotels (such as the US Grant... Read more

This hotel in the center of "darling" Rapid City is the perfect headquarters for a visit to Mount Rushmore (and other spectacular National and state Parks). It's historic (the sculptor stayed there as he was conceiving the monument) and the downtown location provides easy access to the many of the locations you will want to visit. It's not perfect. The hotel is quite comfortable and the staff is very helpful and efficient. Some of the 2 double bed rooms are a little cramped but overall very nice. The king room I had previously was great. I love the pub on the ground floor and apparently, so do many locals. The Vertex lounge on the roof is very nice and fun to have a nice glass of Scotch, but it is a little high end for any extensive partying - probably by design. As she was retrieving my key, my dog, who my wife had seated in the lobby, barked at someone. It was just his normal excited bark. The lady at the fro... Read more

The Alex Johnson Hotel is a good location motorcycle riders wanting to escape the congestion in Sturgis during rally week. More importantly, Rapid City is a fantastic location to quickly access the mountain roads, Keystone, SD, Needles Highway, Mt Rushmore, etc. A rider can leave/return Rapid City much easier than Sturgis. The hotel was clean and well maintained. Our room was very small (2 doubles), so leave as much gear as possible on the bike/truck. You'll park in a three story garage abo... Read more

Nice location in the heart of a comfortable small city. Historic (read: old), but Hilton seems to be making improvements. Starbucks, a gift shop, and an Irish Pub attached at ground level, and a more upscale bar/restaurant on the roof. the rooms still need some attention - our A/C unit and its push-button controls reminded me of 1985 or so, and on the 7th floor the hot water was inconsistent at best. Located downtown with free parking 2 blocks away. Lots to do in the neighborhood. Friendly helpful staff. Rooms are clean with modern bathroom, fridge. Two restaurants. One is an Irish pub with decent casual food and free popcorn. The other is a bar on 10th floor with better menu but didn't have time to eat there. The only disappointment was that the restaurants aren't open for breakfast but there's one across the street that's popular but the wait was too long.

The hotel is beautiful and I recommend everyone stay here, the staff is excellent, it's in the middle of the city and close to everything, amenities are perfect. The rooms are beautiful, the beds are the most comfortable I've slept in at a hotel.

Loved the lobby, location and rooftop deck for drinks in front of a fire. Our room (901) was really dated with a giant jacuzzi tub in the bedroom with mirrors everywhere! I was staying with my daughter and it was a bit creepy. Bathroom was cramped and the Formica counter was cracked by sink and had a weird cutout over toilet for tissue. Loved the rooftop bar for a drink but go downstairs for food!

Hotel Alex Johnson was terrific. Old world charm. Great service. Roof top bar was amazing. Fire pits on roof with great happy hour prices. The price was fantastic. It was in a great area of the City. Walking distance to shopping and restaurants. They are in the middle of renovation but it was easy to overlook since the hotel was in such a great location and so much history.

With other rooms available, I was assigned a noisy room directly across from the elevator. The room carpet had a stain of about 1 ft.² in size. Upon request, I was given a new room. However, there was NO HOT WATER in the morning, even after running the shower for 10+ minutes. The front desk explained that "the plumbing is old; it happens all the time". Though polite, they were unable/unwilling to make an adjustment to my bill or provide other credits.

I liked our two day stay, but my wife does not like historic hotels. Renovation was still underway, our room was small but clean, quiet and comfortable. The service was so-so, the valet had to be found and summoned, the front desk was just adequate.

I love this old historical hotel. It has such character and charm. Facilities are very clean, beautiful decks, fun Irish bar, quaint rooms, superb staff. You won't be disappointed. Lots of history, great location, fun place.

The people at the hotel are amazing. Very professional and dedicated. Exactly what I would expect from a Curio. The staff are friendly and take time for making sure everything is perfect. Really appreciated the awesome work Robert from the valet did. Keep up the great work!

What a beautiful, well-maintained, historic property! There are many restaurants and interesting shops within walking distance. The Starbucks in the lobby is nice, too. The room was very clean and then bed and bedding comfortable. We would definitely stay again!

If you want to be close to all the downtown action, this is a great location. Starbucks on the main level is super convenient. 2 bars also gives you plenty of evening options if you decide not to leave the property. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Parking is a challenge, but valet is an option.

The room we stayed in was right off the elevator which you could clearly hear above our TV in the room every time the elevator door opened or closed (and the ding when it arrived at the floor. It was the single noisiest room I've ever stayed in. The size of the room was just large enough to fit a king-sized bed with just enough room to walk around . The bathroom as the single smallest bathroom I've ever seen, anywhere. Also, the bathroom shares water with the ones next door - during a shower so... Read more

We stayed one night in a newly remodeled room. The old hotel has great character and charm. The new room work has updated the bed, furniture, floor and wall coverings nicely. I especially appreciate the updated bathroom. While still a bit small they are nice.

We were right in the middle of town and was able to walk to many shops and eating places. The Alex Johnson is under construction but the noise was minimal and the staff were very kind. The updated rooms were really nice. The one we stayed in was small but we did not take the time to explore all options when booking.
