We were staying across the road on the Shipyard Plantation, which is where this hotel is positioned within the Plantation. We went just for a drink at happy hour but then decided to stay and eat at the bar food from the happy hour menu. The food choice was good and really great value we had calamari to share, then a pizza and a really good burger and fries. Great food, atmosphere and service really enjoyed it. The Hotel is in a great setting adjacent to the beach, which is a wonderful beach.

Upon our late-night arrival, we were warmly greeted by a very helpful bellman, Kevin. He made it a great start at the resort for a weary traveler lugging around a beat-up piece of luggage. Thanks to Kevin's ingenuity, I can now use it as it was meant to be - a roller. The rest of our trip was marked by friendly staff going the extra mile such as ever-smiling Mildred (hostess), Barbara (cook) and our very attentive restaurant and poolside servers, Jason and Ben. With the exception of poor internet connectivity, this hotel was really excellent. Attractive grounds, wonderful proximity to gorgeous beach, friendly and helpful staff. What I really appreciated was their responsiveness to a problem that was my fault: I left my Ipad and some money in the safe when I checked out. They located the items quickly and offered to mail them to me, free of charge. Great service, and I appreciate the help in recovering my Ipad.

My family and I stayed at this resort for spring break earlier this year (in March). From the moment we pulled up, we experienced pure luxury and relaxation. The place speaks for itself. It is situated right along the beach, literally steps away. This place will take your breath away. The staff is super friendly and helpful, which only made our stay even better. I'm already looking forward to coming back next year.

I have been visiting HHI my entire life. My husband and I have visited all resorts on the island over the past 12 years. We really enjoyed our stay here! We stayed at this resort two years ago as a couple and loved it. We brought our toddler this year and had a great time! Check in: We checked in quickly with Julia and when we arrived to our room realized it had two doubles. We called down and asked for a King. They worked quickly and were so nice to accommodate us! If you are planning a trip to HHI, look no further than this resort. We decided to visit the Sonesta because we received compensation points for a problem-stay at their St. Maarten resort. It was a make-up trip in a sense and certainly exceeded our expectations. The staff are wonderful - so friendly and welcoming. The Sonesta hotel is a nice hotel that seems to cater to families with small children. It has a lot of amenities, but even the "adult" pool had children in it which was a disappointment. The live music in the lobby was nice but again the children were running around screaming so it was hard to hear the music over that.

This was our second stay at the Sonesta for a conference, and I hope that I'll "have" to come back every year. The pool is great, and the beach is right there, too! My family and I have been going to Hilton Head Island every summer for seven straight years, and have spent the past six at this hotel in Shipyard Plantation. We first started staying here when it was the Crowne Plaza, but have enjoyed it even more since it became the Sonesta and has been completely renovated. This hotel is first class all the way, which is definitely appreciated since it could easily just rely on its excellent location and beachfront property to sell rooms. Kudos to manageme... Read more

Just spent 4 nights at the Sonesta Resort, so grateful for this website as it helped set expectations for our stay! The resort was a nice relaxing getaway for our family of four. The pool and beach kept us busy during the day but wish they had more activities in the evenings. They had a family friendly movie showing on 2 of the 4 nights of our stay, it was basically a LCD projector set in a small meeting room, clearly they did not want to put much effort into the activity. The Sonesta was a very nice hotel....but not quite the "resort" that I was expecting. Upon check-in I was offered an upgrade to an ocean view room for an additional $80/night. I was assured that the view was "very nice and worth the cost" so I agreed to the upgrade. After walking as far from the elevator as possible to get to the room I saw that the ocean view was a SLIGHT peek of water above the trees and buildings. Called back down to front desk and explained I was not willing to pay extra... Read more

Hilton Head is an OLD resort town. Hotels are tired, sad, and musty. Sonesta is an old hotel, low ceilings, stucco walls, not modern, but the renovations are bright, airy, and very comfortable. It was a very nice hotel and it was nice to be spoiled but to be honest for the cost they could have at least had a free breakfast. The internet would not work on my phone the entire time I was there and they surprised us with an extra $100 worth of charges on checkout that we were never advised about. They also did not have heated pools so we were restricted to just the one pool in the covered corner that was sheltered from the cold.

My wife and I stayed for 4 nights for golf and Thanksgiving holiday. This is a very nice resort and very pet friendly. I travel with my diabetic alert dog and the hotel staff made us very welcome as a pet and service dog owner. Our room and amenities exceeded expectations, especially given hurricane Matthew hitting the area. If we had one negative it was with food and beverage on the first night of arrival. We expected better from a resort of this size, ultimately deciding to dine elsewhere th... Read more

A little pricey, and "resort fee" added to bill. This seems to be more and more common and is just a way to increase the bill. Room very nice and check in was efficient. Easy, free parking. Breakfast not included but the restaurant off the lobby was very good.

This is our second time back to this marvelous hotel. From bellman to check-in, we were treated like old friends. Chloe made check in a snap and even though we were early for our reservation, we were able to check in. Everyone one associated with this hotel was friendly and helpful. The room was very nice overlooking the pool with an ocean view. Though the hotel appeared to be full, there was no noise. This will continue to be on our destination list. Thanks for an enjoyable 3 days.

I've been going to the Sonesta for a few years and never had a bad experience. This time it was a spur of the moment thing. And I decided to go. We when we got there everything was great. Everyone was polite and helpful. They even gave me a upgrade to a garden pool view. Well check in went to room. About 4 hours later I was sick with flu. I spent the night but by the next morning I felt really bad. We decided to just go back home. Went to the front desk ask could we check out an... Read more

When we arrived in the evening about 6:30 The room was suppose to be ready but the bathroom had not been cleaned and there was no toilet paper. We had to ask several times then finally go up front desk. Second day no clean towels were brought to room And third day same problem. The hotel had been under construction do some parts were still very old and dirty. I would not recommend this place.

If you are looking for a place to disconnect and park yourself poolside or on the beach, this is it. The rooms are not fancy, but adequate and well-kept. The grounds are lovely. The pool is pristine, the lounge chairs are abundant and clean and the outdoor cushioned seating areas are a nice feature. It's a short walk over the dunes to a wide beach with sugar sand. Beach restoration work was underway immediately in front of the hotel while we were there, so our impressions of the beach are b... Read more

I would have given 5 stars if we could have had a better view of the ocean. We were on the fifth floor and had an enormous tree we could practically touch from our terrace. Needless to say , we were not able to see much else , not even the pool directly below us. We could hear the fountain that was in the pool , that was relaxing in itself. The ocean was a bit of a walk but nice beach area. The hotel itself is beautiful and our room was fantastic . Very spacious and comfortable. The staff w... Read more
