The Gardens at Middleton Place, the oldest landscaped gardens in the United States, sit just outside the doors of this beautiful inn. Established in 1741 by Henry Middleton, the garden reflects grand classic early 18th century European and English style with geometry and symmetry as the rule. Employing great reasoning skills in the art of aesthetic balance with careful attention to the woods and water, it is no wonder the gardens are so breathtaking!

The Middleton Place House Museumwas originally part of a three building residential complex that once overlooked the Ashley River and was composed of a gentleman`s quarters, library, and conservatory. Originally the gentleman`s quarters known as the South Flanker, it is the only surviving portion of the triad after a fire in February of 1865 claimed the other two buildings just two months before the end of the Civil War. Restored from the flames, the building weathered earthquakes and homeowners, and even housed slaves and freedmen who served the Middleton family before finally becoming the House Museum in 1975.

The Middleton Place Plantation Stableyards, which has existed since the Civil War, has continued to breed the same buffalo, sheep, goats, poultry and guinea hogs over the last two centuries. Skilled workers who demonstrate the skills practiced by the artisans who formerly maintained the facility can still be found there today and will gladly explain Plantation life from the Emancipation to the Reconstruction and through the twentieth century.
