Pros: the staff of the hotel is very helpful, the hotel provides free parking, breakfast is included (although its not excellent ), area is very calm, rooms area clean, free wifi. We also believe there was a pool but that we did not use. Cons: The decor is dated needing to be updated, not that near from city centre downtown and overpriced for the all package (although we've noticed that Charleston's Hotels are really overpriced)

Deirdre at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was better than a lot of places we stayed and there was free parking. But the location is not handy to anything. The only place to walk and eat is either the next door Marriott or a McDonald's. Downtown is pretty far away, especially with all the one-way streets and traffic, and parking downtown is certainly at a premium. Our room was badly in need of updating. When I went to use the dryer the whole unit, dryer holder a... Read more

This is the second HI Express that I have stayed at. Nice lobby area, coffee and tea 24/7, premium bedding, -- so worth it. The business center is there if you need it. The complimentary breakfast had enough variety to please all. I wanted to lounge at the outdoor pool, but the weather was cooler than I expected that day. I was told that the 1st and 2nd floors are pet floors. Though my booking went in as a pet room, the front desk was efficient in changing that to a regular room, since ... Read more

Let me start off by saying that my review is based on staying on the first floor in a pet friendly room (room 104). The first floor is creepy. The rooms are down the hall from housekeeping, and it is just feels uncomfortable the moment you walk down the hall. The room itself was clean, and the bathroom is updated. The rest of the room is your typical Holiday Inn decor, but the room is old. Our balcony door lock was broken. I am glad my husband decided to check it, because I would have never ... Read more

Stayed here two nights on a 2week holiday....it certainly is a long way from downtown and you need to get a taxi...uber seems the best choice. The hotel was reasonably priced and clean and breakfast was included.we managed to use the pool which was fine on a hot southern day. If you have time to book stay somewhere more down town but it was affordable for a last minute booking and the town has too many attractions to stay in your room all day.

Overall, very clean, nice hotel. I don't know if you should request a room on the other side of the hotel, but we had one facing the street we came in on. Starting about 9pm until finally falling asleep, there were sirens (police or ambulance, not sure) that went up and down the street at least once an hour, but mostly twice. Also, there is a lovely helipad located a couple buildings over. You get a very nice view of a low level helicopter flying by your windows once, maybe twice a night. W... Read more

My husband and I frequently stay at Holiday Inns all over the east coast because we have a credit card that allows us to earn points toward free nights. Most of the rooms are very clean, but not this one! The bathroom was especially dirty. As I was doing my make-up, I had a cockroach fly across the vanity, but I was able to kill it so that my husband could go show the front desk. The front desk lady said that she did not want to see it, but they currently had an exterminator there. (My first tho... Read more

The highlight of our stay at this hotel was the breakfast buffet, which was far more than I had expected. However, the air conditioner in the room was incredibly loud and since it turned on and off, sleeping was difficult at best. When the A/C was off, the road noise and sirens through what apparently were Saran Wrap thick windows took care of any rest I had hoped to get. Parking is also extremely crowded.

The hotel is downtown across the street from the Ashley river. Easy access to expressway to go to Folly beach but not walking distance to historical downtown but there is a trolley or you can easily drive to the historic section, parking is not that hard to find. There is parking at the hotel but it fills up quickly, they have an over flow lot. The hotel is pet friendly without an outrageous pet fee ($20.00). I spent five days there and it was about average. What I liked: the bed itself was comfy. The tv was clear and had a good selection of channels. The breakfast was pretty good. The A/C worked fine. What I didn't like: I'm kinda weird - I don't like the usual head-gets-lost-in-it soft fluffy pillow. I like thin firm pillows, and this hotel (like so many others) didn't have any. Everything was great about this hotel from great room to the very attentive and helpful staff. Breakfast was exceptional and had many choices. Location is very convenient. The hotel is in a great location. It was very easy to get to various locations such as Folly Beach. Driving in downtown Charleston can be challenging with all the one-way streets. This hotel is in the middle of a renovation. The interior appears complete. Outside, there is a big project taking place with the construction of a parking garage and elevated pedestrian walkway to the Ashley River. This will be a great addition. Our room overlooked the construction site, but surprisingly, the thick windows muted the din of the construction. Great complimentary breakfast. Everything was fresh and tasty. Great biscuits! The gym has been renovated and contains primarily cardio ... Read more

My hubby is a priority club member and booked this for a weekend getaway. He usually ALWAYS stays in HI express because of their level of service and overall quality! Well this did not meet his or my expectations! The parking is absolutely horrible!! We had to park in the lot behind the hotel due to construction going on. The air conditioner in room was extremely loud which made it hard to sleep for someone sensitive to light and noise. The breakfast was mediocre, the pancake machine was bro... Read more

My husband and I killed four little cockroaches here. This is a cheap place. They don't have fridges in the rooms, no water bottles either. They sell water bottles on front desk. The problem is that first night they charged me one dollar each bottle and second night they charged me two dollars for one bottle of water. When I asked the front girl about the difference in price she was very rude and answered "I don't know about that", among other things. Save yourself some trouble and never stay in... Read more

This was our go to place in Charleston for many years. What happened? First of all the parking was rediculous! The City has taken over the adjoining land for a parking lot. Thus the HI Express blocked off the check-in portico! Didn't they think about valet services so the guests didn't have to schlep their luggage from the hinterlands and up the hill to check in. As IHG patrons we were not offered a gift bag or extra points as usual. Our room with a King size bed did not have a fridge or a b... Read more

We were having a girlfriend trip and looking for a more reasonably priced hotel and found this. It was a couple miles outside of the tourist area but a reasonable walk. There was also a shuttle available around the corner which worked out great. Also, the beds and pillows were awesome--very comfortable. Nick, the gentleman who worked during the breakfast shift, was very kind, helpful and attentive. Always very pleasant. Also, James, who helped us out when our A/C seemed not to work, got us mov... We are on a road trip and had planned to spend 3 days in Charleston (our first visit). When selecting this hotel, we were expecting it to be above average based on the description and the cost. Were we in for a shock. The room was cramped, the carpet stained, and there was mildew in the stall shower. In general, the place seemed run down - worn carpets, dated interior decorations. Oh, and don't be fooled by pictures with views of the harbor. The hotel is situated so that the views are of a... Read more

The room was clean, however the website makes it look a lot nicer. Construction was going on next door and the parking lot is mostly gravel. I would not stay at this location again. It was not worth the money.

Stayed here on the way home from Florida after a cruise. We got what was supposed to be a room with a view of the river, and paid $10-15 extra for the view. We saw a sliver of water, and a LOT of construction below our room. That was on the 5th floor. When we said something, we were moved to the 8th floor. We could then see a bit more of the river, but HARDLY what I would still consider to be a riverview. Woke up bright and early at 6:30 in the morning by the sounds of construction work, an...
