The Room was large for the price. The decor needs to be seriously updated, but it was OK for an overnight stay. Municipal parking across the street was free, but I was there on a weekend night, so they might charge M-F. The most surprising feature was the restaurant (Officenter). Excellent breakfast and lunch entrees at a reasonable price.

Hotel choices in York, Pa are pretty limited. Basically, it's the modern chains, where every square inch has been subjected to a cost-benefit analysis, and service is limited, or it's the Yorktowne in downtown York. Fortunately, the historic Yorktowne is being run by people who really care about it and are reinvesting in the property. They are not quite "there" yet, but they are getting there. Let me clarify. The lobby and public meeting rooms are redone and up to snuff. The in-house restaurant ... Read more

The hotel is a wonderful piece of history located in downtown York. Although the hotel is starting to show it's age, our room on the eighth floor was recently renovated and was very clean. The cost of the room was very reasonable. The staff was accommodating even though the hotel was sold out for a wine dinner when we visited. We thought we had left something in the room and the staff searched the room for us and gave us a call at home that was much appreciated. There's a small restaurant in the... Read more

This old hotel is a wonderful reminder to us all that nice things don't always have to come in brand new packages. Stayed here on a business trip and would gladly stay again. Our room was neat, clean, nicely furnished, very comfortable. There didn't seem to be many mid-week guests. So, the place was quiet. The staff was professional, courteous, and personable. Some in our group said that they had found the water pressure or fixtures in the showers was inadequate. We had no such problem. Pa... Read more

Historic doesn't have to mean rundown. Stained carpeting, peeling wallpaper and old-fashioned fuzzy box televisions that get about half the channels that they promise are just some of the issues. Service and parking were fine and this place could be a jewel but it needs a lot.

First visit to USA in years. Went to the Harley Davidson Factory tour and stayed at The Yorktowne 2 nights. Hotel is beautiful, not a box as many standard hotels. You walk into the lobby and are transformed to a different time. The staff was courteous, very accommodating and friendly. Our room was clean with a very comfortable king size bed. Parking across the street was very convenient. Breakfast in the restaurant was good and reasonably priced. We plan on visiting York and Gettysburg again an... Read more

We really enjoyed this beautiful hotel in the historic enclave of York. Its public rooms are beautifully decorated with great ambience. Our 8th floor guest room was comfortable with great views of the city. And, it was a great bargain. It features a beautiful 4 Diamond bistro.

We were in the area for a wedding, and we love historical hotels and history in general, so the Yorktowne seemed like the perfect choice. Walking up the stairs into the lobby reminded me of the beautiful Francis Marion in Charleston. You could see all the beautiful details of the 1920 but this hotel had not been maintained as well as the Francis Marion. Our first room was let's say in need of some TLC to bring it back to its glory days. However, our biggest problem was the tub was very, very slo... Read more

I have family in the area, and I remember the glory days of this hotel. Sadly glory fades. I generally love historical hotels (Hotel del Coronado and Stonewall Jackson Are my favorites )...and the quirks that go with them. Actual keys, mail chute, lobby...great examples. Where the experience went foul was the room. Plenty people have said it, so I won't rehash. The pictures speak for themselves. If you like old hotels, stay in a B and B and just visit the public spaces at the Yorktown... Read more

We stayed at the Yorktowne on Saturday, June 25th and left Sunday, June 26th. The building itself has such a historical look and vintage charm. The lobby is clean and very inviting harking back to the Roaring 20's. The front desk staff were very courteous and friendly. The best part? We had a key to the room. Not a key card mind you but an actual KEY. The elevators had charm and historical facts. We kidded that we expected to see two girls in dresses at the end of the hallway saying, "Co... Read more

Historic - yes. That means a place much in need of a near total rehab to fix things such as: peeling wallpaper and plaster in the room, stains on the shabby carpet, disgusting looking stains on the bathroom ceiling, scuffed doors, tired furniture, stairs from the street, etc.. The pillows are very hard and the bedding and towels are below what you'd find at Motel 6. Also, "downtown" York is far from lively.

I checked in at 9 pm and was checking out 7 am the next day. The room was large and the bed was really comfortable - the good. See Adam P review to add to my review. It had the smallest bathroom - the sink was in another room - and the lowest toilet seat every. Anyway, the next morning the shower head didn't work and when I called to ask how, the clerk had the nerve to ask if I had turned on the water - huh?!!!. She did send someone to turn it on but he couldn't figure it out either. Then ... Read more

This historic hotel was the place to stay for Presidents and celebrities for many of its past 90 years. Everyone from Sinatra to Nixon stayed here, It has the feel of a grand old hotel, and some nice features. The rooms were very clean, and the bed was comfortable. The problem was that the touches one would expect in an historic property to bring it to four star standards, such as air conditioning in the hallways, electronic door locks, were missing. Now I am not advising that this property be a... Read more

I was one of the few in my group who opted to drive in and out for conference. The others stayed overnight. I had originally thought it was a shame that I could not manage the overnight. After listening to my colleagues horror stories about their night at this hotel, I was grateful I had passed. The food was good. The staff were all attentive and polite. But the physical plant is in dire need of a serious facelift. I can only imagine how elegant this place would have been in it's heyday, but... Read more

If you want a room that is out of the ordinary and has that look of well preserved history this is your place. Rates are competitive with local motels and the experience is unforgettable. Your within blocks of the city market, baseball stadium, many pubs and restaurants as well as local revolutionary historic sites located just blocks away. Two restaurants in the facility, a little pricey but very good. You feel so special when you stay here. You have to do it just once for the experience ... Read more

Stayed here for one night. Musty smelling lobby (can see how grand it would have been in the past) Long corridors, reminiscent of The Shining. Bedroom was awful, stained carpets, stained sofa, torn non shutting curtains, peeling wallpaper, alarm clock and TV from the 80s. Bathroom was the same, cracked basin, questionable looking bath and shower. Overall tired and outdated. It wouldn't take much to retain the history but be a nice clean place. I have stayed in this hotel 4 times. I really like it, BUT I think I need to say this. This time I feel I must say something. When I went in the bathroom I once again had to tighten the toilet seat down. Additionally, the light above the sink was burned out. I told the desk in the morning. The night clerk said I should have called and they would have had it fixed. I figured it was easier to just fix it myself, and quicker and quicker was paramount at the time. My problem is, housekeeping is in ... Read more

I chose the Yorktowne because of the proximity to a business meeting in downtown York. The hotel was charming - you could tell it had once been a pretty swanky place. I was quite surprised to get an actual metal key for the guest room. The room I had was clean, but there were stains on the carpet and sofa. The room was in need of a major overhaul, decoration-wise. Breakfast at the hotel restaurant was reasonably priced and very good.

When we got into the room we found that there was a visitor dead in our bath. A cockroach we reported it at reception and the reaction was disappointing. The receptionist said "he won't be please at having to clean it up" meaning the person taking the bags to the room. (We were delighted with the visitor) No apology or confirmation it was done. The room was dated with wall paper coming off the walls. Paint was coming of the ceiling and there was signs of damp. The lamp on the table had the cabl... Read more

We saw the photos posted of cracked wall paper and stained bathtubs and were a little worried, but our worries ended the minute we walked in and saw the brass railings, carpeted stairs, and huge old fashioned lobby featuring chandeliers, a baby grand, bookshelves, and nooks defined by settees and comfortable chairs. The hotel was downtown in an historic district and a quick walk to excellent restaurants. The bedrooms are spacious and individualized. There is nothing cookie cutter about them. Some... Read more

There is parking on the opposite side of the street shortly before the hotel loading zone so if you do not have much luggage you may as well park first. Otherwise you will need to drive around the block to reach the parking (which is free on weekends). This is a historic hotel with a lovely lobby and interesting history. The room was a modest size. It was dark and hard to open the curtains wide. The view of the architecture of the courthouse was good once you got past the curtains. For some reas... Read more

We stayed in this hotel because of the close proximity to a wedding venue and other wedding guests were staying here. I was not dismayed upon entering the lobby. Yes, the carpet was in dire need of a good cleaning or just overall replacement, but it was not completely terrible. I was, however, taken aback by receiving an actual brass key for the room. I didn't think these existed in today's modernization. Upon unlocking our door for the first time, I had to ram my shoulder into the door to ... Read more

While the outside of the hotel and the entrance/first floor are gorgeous, the rooms themselves desperately need to be updated. The ceiling in our room had water-spots and the walls just generally needed fresh paint. Everything at the hotel felt old, and therefore did not feel truly clean. The appliances in the kitchen of our suite literally appeared to be from the 1960's. The decor in general was outdated; the couches and other furniture, again, seemed to all be 1960's-style. Overall, the hotel ... Read more

My husband and I stayed here for my sisters wedding. We always check any hotel for bedbugs regardless of where we stay. Checked the bed-nothing. But around 12:30 I happen to wake up and look at my pillow. 2 bedbugs inches from my face. Horrified I immediately took a shower, threw away my pajamas and went down to checkout. The girl at the front desk said they would refund my money and have the manger call me in the morning. Well wait and see if they actually call me tomorrow. This place is old , ... Read more
