"Having been a frequent traveler for both business and pleasure, I was mostly excited about my first trip to NY and my stay at the iconic Waldorf Astoria...... What a let down! Highly over priced for the room accommodations and the amenities. The room was very dated and drab...unlike the pleasurable arrival in the grand lobby, the scenery from there went south. Light fixtures were in need of repair, the air did not work properly, and the bathroom looked like it was in need of an immediate home renovation. A two drink bar tab was well over $$ for a glass of wine and a mimosa. This was highly unacceptable in my opinion for a room well above $$$ per night.
While we enjoyed the vicinity and the quietness of the hotel, the costs associated with a 3 night stay for a superior? two bed stay, certainly left us questioning why we chose this hotel."

"Staring at a brick wall adorned with construction scaffolding is not my idea of elegance for which the Waldorf Astoria is supposedly renowned the world over. I thought I was getting a great deal at the NY Waldorf Astoria when I received an email showing a decrease in room rates. I booked a Queen deluxe room and could only imagine the luxury and elegance I would walk into. On arrival, the lobby was huge and glamerous and you felt like royalty when addressed by the attendants at the reception desk. It was impeccable and bright, and everyone was so kind and helpful. I could just imagine what the room looked like if the lobby was this elaborate. As I opened the door on the 14th floor, the room was spacious and very clean, but was showing signs of wear and tear from years of use. I did notice that it was only in late afternoon but the room was very, very dark. After having to switch on every lamp in the room, I went to the windows to find out why. I was shocked to see that my windows were facing a brick wall to the front, another wing of rooms and windows to my immediate right to the point that if I opened up the window, I could have shook the person's hand in the next wing, and to top that off, construction scaffolding was adorning all the outside walls from roof to sidewalk, blocking any light from coming into my room. The windows were basically useless because of them facing a brick wall. It appeared that my entire wing faced this brick wall from roof to sidewalk. This room was normally $300.00 more than the $400.00 I paid for it, and I was flabbergasted. The bed was listed as a 'Serenity Mattress' with a super-topper mattress pad and a touch of down pillows and I couldn't wait to sit on the bed. Wrong!!! When I sat down, I could actually feel the springs pressing against the material on the side of the mattress and the mattress was nothing great. Not much padding or plushness . Mine at home is much, much better than this. I knew I was going to have a tough night on this matress just by feeling the springs pushing against my hand. The room was cold at night and it was only October and I went to turn on the heat, but after trying every maneuver known to man, I couldn't get any heat to come out. I wound up sleeping with my sweater on. The bathroom was clean, but needed some touch-ups, but at least it was very clean as was the entire room. I ordered a piece of apple pie with ice cream on the side and a bottle of soda from room service around 11:00 p.m. Sadly, the pie was really bad and I could not eat it and left it on the plate. It tasted like the apples were no where near ripe and the pie was very dry and bitter. The vanilla ice cream was good, but the portion was very small. The soda was an 8 ounce size bottle. That wound up costing me $32.00, no kidding! So, after a day of sightseeing in NY and being exhausted, I retired in a 'cold' room where the heat would not turn on, sleeping on a mattress that was nothing great and reminded me of something one would buy from a local department store on sale, and really wanting something for a late night snack that was sweet, but instead got a bitter, dry slice of apple pie. What I can say is that the room was very clean and the halls were quiet, and I am thankful for that, but I think I could have gotten a much cheaper room that was just as clean somewhere else. I truly thought the view would be breathtaking, that I would melt into the 'Serenity Mattress', and cover up with the exquisite sheets and comforters. What a let down! I guess to get the oooh-ahhhh effect one would have to pay $700.00 per night, because my room was reduced and look what I got. I just kept saying to myself: 'it's clean and quiet, it's clean and quiet'....., but I am still not happy with the room I got and the price I paid for it, and gosh, I would really have loved a piece of homemade apple pie a la mode that night that was fit to eat!"
