We chose to stay here since it was such close proximity to Lincoln Center. It was very difficult for me to find a reasonably priced hotel in New York City and only reason we chose to stay here was due to scarcity and my Marriott status. We only live 45 minutes north of Manhattan so it's hard for me to justify getting a hotel in NYC. Our room was nice and well appointed but very small, which is what you'd expect in New York City. It's in a fantastic location right along Central Park South and w... Read more

Very impressed with this place, stayed there years ago and had to climb over the bed to get to the window but it was still nice then. Excellent location. Stayed in a much nicer room with a view of the park than the room I stayed in 20+ years ago. The staff were courteous, everyone did their job extremely well. Marriott must keep their best people at this location because everyone worked together and each person had exceptional customer service. Service started with the guy that helped with ... Read more

First, and foremost, I want to report that the front of the house staff did not disappoint. However, the "Executive Lounge" was anything but an executive "lounge". I recommend any additional dollars spent at this property be directed toward an upgrade to a full ‚??Park View‚?? room rather than lounge/club access. The hotel‚??s location on Central Park is definitely its primary draw. The incredible sweeping Park View rooms above the 10th floor are well worth the extra money. However, don‚??t set... Read more

We visited NYC kind of last minute, so a friend who works for Marriott got us a friends & family discount. After waiting in a huge line at the font desk, not only did they not honor the discount until after my friend called the hotel personally, but they said they were going to and then I check my bank account today and saw that they charged the full room price! That was sneaky and deliberate. We came to the Essex House expecting superior service and a beautiful room. We got a clueless concierge... Read more

This hotel has a lot to offer starting with the lovely location south of Central Park, the renovated gym, and the generally helpful and attentive service. However after several years as the Marriott flagship property in NYC it is still unclear when it will be upgraded to the expected standards. Old carpets, strange décor, eclectic lighting that required maintenance to come by to explain (and I am not alone) how to turn on and off, unattractive view of industrial air-conditioning units in intern... Awful experience. Dark, tired rooms. Cell phone did not work in room. I arrived after midnight and hotel had no security and doorman present. No bathrobes in room. Called down and was told they don‚??t offer bathrobes‚??(I had rented a small suite). The rooms are dark and tired, and mine was a sort of gilded gold and red-leather combination‚??both tired and gaudy. We recently stayed at the Essex House for 2 nights to attend our daughter's college graduation, so we were in a celebratory mood...initially. Full disclosure--we are Marriott Rewards Members and stay at Marriot hotels frequently, for business and vacations and usually are completely satisfied, but this time there were definitely disappointments. We arrived early after a 4 1/2 hr drive, and since our room wasn't ready, decided to visit the bar for a drink. I had a variation on a whiskey sour and ... Read more

I was paying with points so I wasn't expecting much......which is what I got. If I was using money I would've been back downstairs in a New York minute. Awesome location on Central Park South and nice common areas. The rooms are fine but not over the top, typical of what you would find in an older building. The room redo was fine but there is only so much you can do with an old structure. All in all a decent experience and a good choice for the the business traveler or a weekend when having the convenience being in the heart of Midtown is important.

We shouldn‚??t have wasted our money on room with view because the only time I enjoyed the view from window was when my husband went to return the rental car. The first concierge lounge is over taxed and space is truly limited. We also liked the rooms...always clean and comfortable. We left less than a week ago and were planning another trip next month however our last stay was a little disappointing. The carpet was stained and looked dirty and so was the couch in the living area. When we pulled the pullout bed out from the couch the springs we... Read more

Ok hotel but rooms vary tremendously in size. Stayed in one room the size of a closet and another that was palatial. Good location right by central park is highlight of the hotel. Would recommend asking what size of room is when booking. And would avoid hotel bar - overpriced and nothing special.

The staff is very nice and extremely helpful. Area is good, but if you are driving, best to give them the car, for valet. Doorman was trying to get taxi's for everyone and couldn't give me a lot of time when checking in. Room was very comfortable and quiet. Bathroom was fine. Only one robe and one large bath towel. Water in a bottle was $9.00. They provide no water in room.

My family and I have spent a great week there: Spacious suite for five Perfect cleaning Enough towels and wardrobes for the Whole family Friendly staff Etc. The only drawback lies in the fact that free wifi is only available in the lobby.

So far excellent. Love our room. Staff is superb. Great executive lounge. Appetizers drinks etc. Right at Central Parks feet. Love it. Weekend in the city. Prime location. We are tired of Time Square. Check it out! Great location with lots of restaurants to choose from within walking distance.

Beautiful hotel and great location. Thumbs down, however, on a few items. Suggest the following: 1) room 1503 needs to have the bathtub cleaned better; it has some obvious stains; 2) bathrobe was stained; 3) massage area is not quiet to relax; you can here all the gym noise; 4) room 1503 has a great view but it is not noise free; you can hear all the street noise (could barely sleep).

Two positives: our concierge was great. Also Raul at the bell desk was lovely But the rest of the stay was TERRIBLE! The staff were neither friendly or helpful They overcharged us for multiple items And when I called the front desk to get it fixed, Elena was so rude, I refused to continue our conversation Housekeeping woke us up on the day we were checking out...not sure why they would come hours before check out I will NEVER stay at this hotel again Although a great location, I will gla... I took my family to NYC for 5 days (using Marriott points) and after much research we decided on the JW Essex House. We were thrilled with our decision. The staff, from the general manager Mr. Batta to the executive lounge staff to the housekeepers were amazing. Even though we were staying on points, they were still able to upgrade us to a wonderful family suite which was spacious (by NYC or any other standard) and very updated. I wish I could remember everyone who went out of there way to help... Read more

Location is great. Close to subway stations, shopping and restaurants. Staying here was a great experience for me and my girls. Felt like we were back in historic times but at the same time the amenities are great. Staff (especially Sharlene at front desk) was very friendly. Concierge served great breakfast. Would love to make this our annual summer mom-daughter trip hotel!

I have stayed in Essex House numerous times but was there again this week for the first time in some years - still an amazing hotel in every sense of the word. Rooms are beautifully appointed although you need to be in the more expensive ones to get the spectacular ones to get the view of Central Park. It doesn't matter which room you are in though as you get 5 Star service no matter where you are. I was on a business trip on my own so stayed in the average rate room - still fantastic.

The locations is great in all ways, easy to get to by car, subway or just walking. The service is excellent, the rooms are clean, nice and includes everything you need. I also want to mention that the security level is higher than many other hotels in New York and that's very good. The service level in the reception, including Bell man and concierge service is also working very well.

I am a somewhat regular visitor to NY from Sydney, however I normally stay downtown ~ Soho, TriBeCa. My husband booked Essex House for a change and it was fabulous. Waking up and running through the park was awesome and made me feel like a local. The park also provided some respite from the heat. We had an enormous suite on the third floor. Two bathrooms, separate lounge, no views but we were happy with the extra space as my husband had to work from the room sporadically. The rooms are a little ... Read more

This iconic Art Deco property delivers with clean, comfortable and functional rooms. We stayed in room 920 which has a fresh feel. The bathroom is spacious and modern. The lobby is spacious and the staff is mostly very friendly. We were a bit worried about some of the negative reviews but were quickly put at ease. Yes, there was no view but the property made it up with very functional lighting which comes close to natural sunlight. This is New York so no-view rooms will happen, even at higher r... Read more

Everything in this hotel is amazing, except for one thing: staff. We had the UNprivilege of staying at the hotel at the same time the Real Madrid was. Story short: we couldn't leave the hotel because there were so many people outside trying to see the team, and decided to stay in the hall. A security from JW said we were not allowed to stay in the hotel hall, and was extremely rude and arrogant. When we asked for his name to make a complaint, he refused to say so, and managed to laugh at us and... Read more

It was a heavenly trip for our anniversary. Got upgraded to a king suite room that overlooked all of Central Park. Great location! Took a little time to get ice up to the room, but view was spectacular. We have Concierge level, which was fabulous. Breakfast was full spread buffet, including fresh salmon, eggs, bacon and sausage. We will definite go back here when in NYC.

Given the age of the building, this was a perfectly wonderful Marriott site. The bed was great, and the staff all were very helpful and courteous. The food was a bit pricy (which is the only thing that stopped this from being 5 star), but it was manageable.

I stayed there with my family in July 2016. I thought it was great because of the convenient access to the wonderful NY subway as well as the access to Central Park. My boys loved the park! There were an incredible number of restaurants in the area as well.

We were originally scheduled to stay in Columbus Circle for a meeting, but got moved to the Essex House. We were disappointed to be moved, but very much enjoyed the hotel. It is really nice inside and very clean. The price is amazing for such a great hotel with such an awesome location. The people, especially housekeeping, were so friendly. It is really nice that they offer a lighted magnifying mirror in the bathroom, house shoes, robes, cords for charging devices, an adapter for the outlet in c... Read more

Stayed at JW Marriott to celebrate 28th wedding anniversary, the staff went out of there way to make it special, felt like we were royalty. Upgraded to a Central Park view that was awsome, left us wine to celebrate. Housekeeping was impeccable. Mallory Jolly and her staff were awesome, they made this a memory I will never forget, still reflecting on it. I definitely will be back to JW Essex, sorry Waldorf you lose!

As a loyal Marriott traveler I know the hierarchy of expectations that come with each of the brands under the Marriott name. I picked this hotel for its excellent location near Central Park and because I wanted a little "more" than would be found at the other Marriott brands nearby. The service was very and the public areas were also FAIRLY well maintained. The rooms however are at least five years overdue for a refresh as are some of the common areas. It's an average experience, but not a 'JW'... Read more

I have stayed at the Essex House a number of times when it was with former owners. It's a lovely hotel across from Central Park, I booked a park view King room, it was an ok size but was on a low floor so was disappointing. Despite the low floor the room was quiet. Bathroom was well equipped. Staff are ok but not particular attentive for a luxury hotel. The location is the best thing about this hotel, I didn't eat here too many great options nearby including Whole Foods at Columbus Circle if yo... Read more

The JW Essex House is an antique hotel that sits just south of Central Park. The location is prime and the service is amazing. The hotel rooms are small and a bit out of date but that's what the Essex House is famous for. I will not come back in the future as there are many other properties to choose from with rooftop bars etc.

We stayed at the JW Marriott Essex House New York for a quick girls weekend. The Central Park South location was great for getting around. We mostly used Uber, so I can't speak to the Metro stops near by. Some rooms have better views than others, so I'd recommend a Central Park view. The employees were all very courteous and hospitable. We had to move rooms due to an A/C problem, and they made sure we got a better room. One odd thing was that there is not a coffee pot in the rooms. However, ther... Read more

I have stayed here monthly for three years and now moved to trump Central Park . Why? Essex food is terrible, room service worse, every month the shower curtain smells up the entire room with mildew . Trump park central two rooms bedroom and living room same price as Essex one room. Trump food very good and need reservations ...Essex never need reservation. View much better at trump and personal much more courteous at trump. Complaining to Essex falls on a tin ear.
