We chose to stay here since it was such close proximity to Lincoln Center. It was very difficult for me to find a reasonably priced hotel in New York City and only reason we chose to stay here was due to scarcity and my Marriott status. We only live 45 minutes north of Manhattan so it's hard for me to justify getting a hotel in NYC. Our room was nice and well appointed but very small, which is what you'd expect in New York City. It's in a fantastic location right along Central Park South and w... Read more

Very impressed with this place, stayed there years ago and had to climb over the bed to get to the window but it was still nice then. Excellent location. Stayed in a much nicer room with a view of the park than the room I stayed in 20+ years ago. The staff were courteous, everyone did their job extremely well. Marriott must keep their best people at this location because everyone worked together and each person had exceptional customer service. Service started with the guy that helped with ... Read more

First, and foremost, I want to report that the front of the house staff did not disappoint. However, the "Executive Lounge" was anything but an executive "lounge". I recommend any additional dollars spent at this property be directed toward an upgrade to a full ‚??Park View‚?? room rather than lounge/club access. The hotel‚??s location on Central Park is definitely its primary draw. The incredible sweeping Park View rooms above the 10th floor are well worth the extra money. However, don‚??t set... Read more

We visited NYC kind of last minute, so a friend who works for Marriott got us a friends & family discount. After waiting in a huge line at the font desk, not only did they not honor the discount until after my friend called the hotel personally, but they said they were going to and then I check my bank account today and saw that they charged the full room price! That was sneaky and deliberate. We came to the Essex House expecting superior service and a beautiful room. We got a clueless concierge... Read more

This hotel has a lot to offer starting with the lovely location south of Central Park, the renovated gym, and the generally helpful and attentive service. However after several years as the Marriott flagship property in NYC it is still unclear when it will be upgraded to the expected standards. Old carpets, strange décor, eclectic lighting that required maintenance to come by to explain (and I am not alone) how to turn on and off, unattractive view of industrial air-conditioning units in intern... The rooms are dark and tired, and mine was a sort of gilded gold and red-leather combination‚??both tired and gaudy. We recently stayed at the Essex House for 2 nights to attend our daughter's college graduation, so we were in a celebratory mood...initially. Full disclosure--we are Marriott Rewards Members and stay at Marriot hotels frequently, for business and vacations and usually are completely satisfied, but this time there were definitely disappointments. We arrived early after a 4 1/2 hr drive, and since our room wasn't ready, decided to visit the bar for a drink. I had a variation on a whiskey sour and ... Read more

Awesome location on Central Park South and nice common areas. The rooms are fine but not over the top, typical of what you would find in an older building. The room redo was fine but there is only so much you can do with an old structure. All in all a decent experience and a good choice for the the business traveler or a weekend when having the convenience being in the heart of Midtown is important.

We also liked the rooms...always clean and comfortable. We left less than a week ago and were planning another trip next month however our last stay was a little disappointing. The carpet was stained and looked dirty and so was the couch in the living area. When we pulled the pullout bed out from the couch the springs we... Read more

The staff is very nice and extremely helpful. Area is good, but if you are driving, best to give them the car, for valet. Doorman was trying to get taxi's for everyone and couldn't give me a lot of time when checking in. Room was very comfortable and quiet. Bathroom was fine. Only one robe and one large bath towel. Water in a bottle was $9.00. They provide no water in room.

Beautiful hotel and great location. Thumbs down, however, on a few items. Suggest the following: 1) room 1503 needs to have the bathtub cleaned better; it has some obvious stains; 2) bathrobe was stained; 3) massage area is not quiet to relax; you can here all the gym noise; 4) room 1503 has a great view but it is not noise free; you can hear all the street noise (could barely sleep).

I have stayed in Essex House numerous times but was there again this week for the first time in some years - still an amazing hotel in every sense of the word. Rooms are beautifully appointed although you need to be in the more expensive ones to get the spectacular ones to get the view of Central Park. It doesn't matter which room you are in though as you get 5 Star service no matter where you are. I was on a business trip on my own so stayed in the average rate room - still fantastic.

The service level in the reception, including Bell man and concierge service is also working very well.

Therefore it is quiet at night so my family and I slept easily here in comparison to other New York hotels that we have stayed in. Stayed in the city after visiting family in Jersey. This was the perfect location we had all the shopping on Madison and 5th Ave at our disposal. We walked everywhere Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Carnegie Deli, Broadway the Diamond District . We stayed on points and was provided a beautiful one bedroom suite with a huge Bathroom. For NYC this place would be large enough to live in. The executive lounge breakfast was great it was like being on a cruise, bagels and lox, pastries all fresh and... Read more

We spent five days last week at the Essex House in a combination business / vacation trip. The room and bathroom were very, very small but it is NY and the location can't be beat so we were not complaining. However, starting on the second day, we started hearing a non-stop noise above us. Sounded like a large dog running around. We complained and they said they would deal with it. Long story short, the room above us is part of a condominium and there was nothing they could do about it. They coul... Read more

We stayed here a good while ago on our honeymoon when owned by Starwood/Westin. It was a grand place then. stayed this time three nights in October 2016 now it is like any grubby old Marriott once you get past the lovely reception area and old lifts/elevators. years ago there was a lovely art deco dining room with amazing sunday brunch. This has been ripped out and it is now a soulless brown and gold modern thing you could find anywhere. We ate breakfast here and for two adults and a child a b... Read more

I stayed at the JW Essex House on October 22nd for one night. Being a Marriott Platinum I had requested an upgrade but didn't hold my breath. I did not get to the hotel until 10pm that night and I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was upgraded to a family suite. The room was huge (for NY standards), and had 1.5 baths and a separate sitting area. The next morning I had breakfast at the Executive Lounge, and I must say the spread was excellent. The space is not huge, so a little wait for... Read more

I recently spent 4 days in New York at the Essex House and was pleased with the overall look and comfort of the hotel. I found the bed exceptionally comfortable as I'm use to sleeping on a Tempur-Pedic matress. The bathroom was roomy with an exceptional shower with great water pressure (nice). The hotel staff was accommodating and helpful when asked for assistance. I did have a chance to experience breakfast at the hotel of which I would give 4.5 stars with regards to presentation and quality. U... Read more

I have stayed at this property three times over the last three months. I chose it because of its reasonable (for New York) price and its superb location. For those of you that want to run in Central Park it couldn't be more perfect. It is right across the street. It has good access to all amenities. The cons of this property is that the rooms are pretty dated (particularly the bathrooms) and the service at the hotel is pretty spotty. Some people are great; some not so much. I give the ho... Spent a long weekend in NYC just to get in the Christmas spirit, shop, see shows and enjoy the NYC food. The Essex House was above and beyond my expectations. It is in a PERFECT location on Central Park South, walking distance to shopping, theater district, Rockefeller Center, across from Central Park and close to tons of great restaurants and bars. The front desk was very helpfull and professional, my room wasone of the largest I have ever had in NYC-very comfortable, clean and luxurious. Ev... Read more

I cannot say enough about the customer service during my stay. Leading up to the stay, the staff were extremely helpful with coordination. During the stay, the staff were helpful and treated us very well. They even called to congratulate me on my race and to notify me they were going to provide an upgrade. The location is also amazing and the views were excellent.

Spent two nights with my wife to visit friends/family that live in NYC. Location is perfect on Central Park South and great historical building with updates. Bartenders in the restaurant were very friendly and made some great cocktails. Roomsize was larger than expected and very comfortable. Great view of the Park. Gym also was very nice and had adequate equipment to use.

Fantastic location on the south side of Central Park. Some of the rooms have a unobstructed view while others are partially obscured. The rooms can be a little small, but the comfort of the beds make up for all of it. The beds are comfortable and the pillows are the softest of down. The continental breakfast for the elite Marriott rewards members offers fresh fruit, eggs, oatmeal, sausage, bacon, bagels, assorted pastries, and lox. It was our first time staying here and we picked it mostly for the location across from Central Park. We stayed here for a week and really liked it. The rooms are a little outdated, however the suite was quite spacious for NYC standards. The Club lounge was very good and convenient for water and coffee/tea. Brunch and evening snacks weren't bad either. Does get pretty crowded on weekends but quiet during the week. Again you cannot get a better location-we walked in the park almost daily which w... It was great to have corporate travel book me here - especially since its a Marriott property so i get points too! Check in was flawless, got a room with a view of Central Park. The bed is incredibly comfortable and there were lovely amenities, chargers if you forgot yours, bath salts, and a well stocked minibar. Plenty of desk space and lots and lots of outlets to charge everything i need to charge. If the room falls short on anything it would be the lack of a comfy reading chair,... Read more

Would not recommend. Our room was filthy. We took a wet wash cloth and wiped the love seat and it turned black. The carpet was very dirty with numerous spots, it should be replaced. Even though I am a gold elite member, we got downgraded to a room with a view of a wall and trash bags and next to the elevator. Service in the restaurant was bad, we were ignored trying to order a glass of wine. The location is nice, across from Central Park

The location, on Central Park South, is great for getting around Manhattan. Subway stations bookend the area - we were able to walk from Penn Station to the hotel with our luggage (1.4 miles), and then realized the subway for that route was very convenient (Columbus Circle, 59th and 7th avenue). We used points and stayed in a one bedroom suite that easily accommodated three of us. The bedroom had a day bed/couch, and the living had a pull out couch, so 4 or even 5 could probably have fit. Bell staff was awesome and raced down a taxi for us for our airport return while a Trump protest was happening and blacking traffic. I love this hotel--I stayed there before a Marriott and love the art deco style in common areas. With Marriott takeover and being Gold member happy with Executive Lounge for breakfast and evening appetizers and drinks--excellent perk. Bed super comfortable. I had a reasonable rate for the location and did not splurge on the view---that was fine--because the room was clean and comfortable and needed a good nights sleep which was what I had.

My husband and I have been coming to the Essex for many years. Now that it is owned by J. W. Marriott the Essex has certainly lost some of its charm. However, it is a convenient location and generally a well priced hotel for NYC. Thanksgiving the rates go up significantly. If you are attending the parade, Columbus Circle is a short walk. DaynaPapp
