"The bed was extremely uncomfortable, to the point where I have bruises on my body where the bed springs poked me. The room was very old but clean. Considering the location, I got what I paid for because it was central to everything. However, they really need some new mattresses."

"Hotel old and poorly maintained. I 've occupied a room "superior '. The room was very small, the TV stand blocking part of the window, the curtains were torn, dirty carpeting. No bedside table. Bathroom old, flaking paint. Bad bedding. Old painting walls, no decorations. NIn conclusion, for a fairly high price ($ 150/night), poor performance! NI do not fully recommend this hotel, although its location is particularly good.Hôtel vieux et mal entretenu. J'ai occupé une chambre 'superior'. La chambre était très petite, le meuble TV bouchant une partie de la fenêtre; les rideaux étaient déchirés, la moquette au sol sale. Pas de table de nuit. Salle de bain vieille, peinture écaillée. Mauvaise literie. Peinture des murs vieille, aucune décoration.
En conclusion, pour un prix assez élevé (150$ la nuit), une mauvaise prestation !
Je ne conseille absolument pas cet hôtel, même si sa situation géographique est particulièrement bonne."

"I would not recommend this hotel or stay there again. my experience from the time i checked in was unsatisfactory. I felt the gentlemen who checked me in was cold and distant. Then the room was absolutely fifthly, with cracker rappers and receipts under the bed, clearly not been vacuumed in quite a while with dust and crumbs in all the corners, and something white and hard was flaking off the comforter... gross. Not to mention it was directly behind the elevators mechanics, i made it one night until i had to ask to switch rooms. a few hours after they got back to me the switched my to a room dirtier than the first. I just felt very dirty and unwelcome staying at hotel pennsylvania. Its not worth the couple hundred dollars i saved.

"Had to change rooms because of mold in room. Second room just as bad. Tub was peeling. Wires coming out of wall. holes? around door. Flimsy door lock. Curtains stained and clips missing. Room wasn't vacuumed during our stay. Pillows were flat. Leg of sink kept falling off. No room safe. Limited power outlets. Toilet too close to wall. Old, needs serious updating. Need I say more? "That was the lousiest $130 I ever spent. The hotel was very dirty so was the room I stayed in. I had to be switched to another room over night because all of a sudden the sink in the bathroom was clogged and a maintenance man had to come and repair it. The worst part was that there must have been bed bugs because my girlfriend and I have tons of skin irritation. "

"While checking on they could not find the reservation made online. The front desk attendant was rude and I had to show him my confirmation on my iPhone. I was then told it was a discounted reservation and I was put in a room adjacent to a room being renovated. The jack hammers started at 7am. The room was old and dirty. The TV remote was broken. At any rate, this hotel room was not worth it.

"My companion has stayed at the Penn three times prior and us together once and so we expected the same or more from this stay. The well-touted 'Penn 5000' room was a complete joke. The chamber was the smallest room we have ever stayed in; barely large enough for the bed, desk, tv stand and fridge. The bathroom faucets leaked, there were cobwebs on all the walls but the bed was comfortable.
The Continental breakfast was the worst either of us had ever had and we would have spent the same money going to Central Perk in the Lobby than eating awful carbs for an extra fee for the room.
The staff is always friendly so there is that plus, but we were very disappointed this time both for the value and amenities.
YES, we'll probably stay again, because of its proximity to our favorites, but....."

"This was the oldest, nastiest, scariest Hotel I ever stayed in and Im sorry I didn't read the reviews first. The location and rate for where you were was excellent. This hotel had paint chips, splatters, holes in the walls, an old smell, carpet from when the hotel first opened never changed. The same bed linen from the hotel open. The hot water didn't work. This was a mess I would have felt better on the street!! We stayed in that room about 2 hours total for the entire stay because it was so nasty."

"The only good thing that the location was great. I asked for a non smoking room and the clerk gave me a smoking room that was so bad that when you open the door the smell was over barring. I complained and was given another room. The halls were horrible, paint was cracking and the carpet filthy. When I got to the room it was horrible. I did not want to put my bag down. I was so embarrassed because I had invited a guest and the rooms were not what they looked like in your pictures. I would not recommend this filthy hotel to anyone and you should check out these places before your customers book those rooms!"

"From the second we walked into the room it looked like a nightmare out of the bates motel. the walls were allll peeling. there was mold on the floor in the carpet. there was mold in the shower on the ceiling.
the bed was small and HORRIBLE. I was scared to put my bags down anywhere. there were huge holes in the walls with the wires coming out. the TV was outdated and the carpet smelled. I didnt want to turn the lights off for fear of something running out.
there was no staff. there was only one washrag in the entire bathroom.
this room needed to be more than upgraded. Im tempted to report this hotel to the city so they can go in and inspect the room.
people should NOT ever have to sleep in those conditions.
all the money they charge for these rooms, all the guest that stay in here from out of town, i would hate for themt o think thisi s a representation of New york.
i was offended and disgusted by this hotel.

"Considering the prime location of this hotel, I would stay there again. Our room on the 12th floor was spacious and clean. The bed was comfortable and the free continential breakfast was fair. Free use of wifi, in the 12th floor office/breakfast room was nice to have. The guest service staff at the traveler information desk and at guest services reachable by phone, were most helpful. The biggest drawback were the incredibly long ques to check in; over 40 minutes inline. Anytime we passed through the lobby, there was a long queue. It is a shame this hotel is not updated and refurbished since it has such potential. Overall it met our needs. Again, location was perfect so we would stay there again but do not expect a 5 star quality...more like a 3 star."

"As stated in the numerous other reviews on this hotel - if it wasn't that the Hotel Pennsylvania was conveniently located and the price for a family room almost acceptable - no-one would stay here.
Also as said in other reviews, check-in queues are unacceptably long, the public toilets on the lower level are unhygienically dirty and reek, some of the floors are very wet and smell of damp, plaster falls from the walls and ceilings as you walk down the corridors, etc, etc.
However, that said %u2013 after our first room on the 2nd floor (which was as small as a cupboard) for a family of four just wasn't acceptable %u2013 I enquired at the front desk and was offered another room on the 17th floor, which was a lot bigger, smelled better, was dry and far more comfortable %u2013 and was manageable at a push due to our first family vacation to NYC.
Not sure if they give all the bad rooms to people who have booked lower rates through travel websites %u2013 and possibly keep the better rooms (if there are any) for guests who book direct with the hotel.
Sad actually %u2013 as this could be such a beautiful place if you look around %u2013 it reminds you of one of those old-world hotels with all the antique furniture pieces, chandeliers, and large flowing stair cases.
Again (as someone said) give me and my wife the opportunity to run this establishment %u2013 and we'll show you how much you can do with it!
Would we stay there again %u2013 not sure %u2013 unless I can be guaranteed a better room that we eventually ended up with.

"The hotel check in was quick and easy and clerks were very friendly and helpful......The room was nice and clean but it was equivalent to like a Motel 8. We basically only slept there because we were out and about all day. If you want great 'quality' this is not the hotel. However, if you want nice, clean and comfortable this is a great hotel and it is centrally located to every thing. Most importantly it is directly across from Penn Station. I would definitely stay here again."

"My superior room was everything else than that. Worn down hotel, smelly, walls in the room was not clean, bathroom old and cracky tiles and rust on door, bed not really comfortable either, and very small.
Not a friendly hotel and for almost USD 800 for three nights, I expected a lot better than this. The room reduced the quality of our stay, visiting NYC for the first time with my daughter (15).
A long queue at the check in/check out, and the restroom for men downstairs was a horribly smelly place. If I ran this hotel, I would be embarassed.
I would certainly not stay in that hotel again."

"Hotel is very deceiving from their pictures. Lobby....their ONLY asset. Upstairs room and halls were disgusting. Falling plaster, filthy rugs, dirty curtins, peeling ceilings and walls, etc. Also, 'Do Not Disturb' sign was hung outside the door, but cleaners still knocked and opened the door. "We have a mixed review. We were scheduled to arrive late on Thursday night so in order to have the hotel not give our room away I called on Tuesday to let them know. Of course this plan did not work since they did not have our room available. Instead they had to give us a bed without enough bed space and said they would send up a roll away. 30 minutes after we got to our room I had to go back to the front desk to ask about the roll away. It had not even been ordered yet. We finally get to the roll away about 20 minutes later. On Friday when we asked when we could check into our actual room the gentlemen said anytime after 1pm. We returned at 3pm, check-in time, and they did not have a room for us. When I asked to speak to the manager he was going to be right out. 20 Minutes later, the manager never came out, we got a room that meet our reservation. Needless to say the management and the front desk personnel were less than adequate."

"The description of the room did not match with the actual room we received. Which, did not really concern us at all aside from a twin bed for two. Also, the shower did not work very well. The water was flowing rather slow and almost a sprinkle instead of a decent spray and the water barely got warm and stayed cold to cool regardless if we ran the water to 'warm' it up. Otherwise, it was in a great location right across from MSG and Penn Station; which was our jumping-off point to all of the places we visited."

"i went to nyc to get married.. i booked Hotel Pennsylvania b/c it was right across the street from madison sq gardens so i just knew it was nice.. for over 170.00 a night i was expecting the royal treatment.. NOT... the hotel rooms it self was very nasty.. omg,... the carpet was dirty and view out the window was a brick wall..and the worst which brought tears to my eyes (yes i cried) was the nasty bathroom.. it was very nasty and dirty :( ... there was no tub (ok fine) but there was cracks and mild dew in the shower and on the floor (they dont have bleach there).. and the floor of the shower was so nasty we had to put a towel down because we did not want our feet to touch it..everyone in nyc was rude so im not even going to talk about the staff.. but the bathroom was the worst.. i did not get my moneys worth at all i felt like i was in a cheap hotel... :( .. DONT DO IT"

"The only plus side to The Hotel s that we were not in the room much because of all the site seeing we were doing. I felt it was a very poor quality hotel and felt that the lobb and door man gave you a false sense of reality to what you were going to find in your room. The paint peeling off the walls, ceilings and chiping out of the tub. Phone jacks hanging out of the walls black [ I don't know what ] coming out of the registers in a closet. And that was a different room because the first one was horrible. The carpet in the hallways had large bleach stains and the paint peeling as well. Highly upset with the hotel. The staff were great I do have to say that."

However, our room was neat and pretty clean. Like most hotel rooms in th NY area the rooms were small. The staff was excellent and professional! "My husband and I went to NYC for our anniversary June 2012. It was a trip we wanted to take for two years and was worth the wait. Being in the city with so much to do there was minimal time spent in the hotel. The condition of the hotel is kept up well considering how long its been there and how many people it houses. We couldn't have asked for a better location. I would definitely stay at Hotel Pennsylvania again and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to stay in New York City."

"The location was great, it was amazing to be opposite Madison Square Garden! I liked the large entrance. The layout was okay, a bit dark on first entering but overall nice. I was surprised that the lady checking me in didn't have her name badge on and she didn't say good evening to me but she was really pleasant and smiled nicely once all the formalities were taken care of.
On the day of check out the 'quick check out' box didn't make it clear what should be done, maybe just a short sign with what is needed would be useful. The room was nice and comfortable. The old style large floor heating wouldn't give out any heat, only cold air and there was no extra bedding anywhere. The ground floor diner staff directed me to restrooms located on the lower level, somewhere behind the security desk. I never did find them. A bit expensive for what I received, I thought."

"I think Hotel Pennsylvania is very well situated in NY for every purpose you like. Our room was vast, but dark. We always heard the noise of the airconditioning. The hotel room didn't have a leaning chair in the room. You had to use the bed to sit. The general state of the hotel is an older one. "The lobby and the staff were really friendly and nice. However, the bathroom in our hotel is nasty and needs to be updated. The bathrooms were really old and smelly. You could see mold on the ceilings. In addition, some of the metal fixture were rusting away which looks yucky. I won't be staying there again unless they do some major renovations. The only great thing was Penn station is right across the street and the hotel is in a great location. "

"Prior to arrival I requested luggage storage, non-smoking room and the breakfast that was included. I was never advised of additional charges. When we arrived at hotel before check in we were told we had to pay addtional charges to hold our bags.They did not seem to know of my prior special request (because of allergies). The people at front desk were not very friendly and very direct for which I did not care for. I had to give my credit card to hold for incidentals even though I had already paid in full. The room was okay, the towels could use some fabric softening. The housekeeping staff were very friendly and helpful. There were only 2 computers in the room with the breakfast and that wasn't enough for all the guest. Upon departure we were told that we had incidental charges for a car! We fly to NY and then we were told by the lady checking us out that she would check with her manager. She never told us what her manager stated and then REFUSED TO GIVE US A STATEMENT. I wanted something to show that I did not owe anything and to make sure they did not charge my card but still she refused. Again, we had to pay to have our bags held until we departed for the airport. I was not a happy camper after this. The hotel was okay but the front staff need improvement!"

"The lobby is nice, the place looks good on the outside and when you first walk in. Baggage check in is a plus if your flight gets in early and you want to explore NYC but can't check in yet. After that, that's where our stay went very down hill. The check in process took forever. The baggage check closes at 7 pm so that means if you checked a bag you have to lug it from the baggage check downstairs to the lobby since they stop the elevator service to the bag room. (Irritating) Now, onto the Dirty, disgusting rooms. There was even a mouse trap in our room, and some weird pill on the floor. GROSS! The carpet looked like it had water damage at some point and smelled like mildew. The room was very shabby and disheveled looking. No dresser and a clunky tv on a night stand. The A/C was not controllable (Knob broken off), you either sweated to death or you froze and even then, it was cold but humid in the room. It was damp feeling. The windows wouldn't open, and it was very loud. People slamming doors all night long, all the street noise can be heard, as well as what is going on in your neighboring rooms, so bring a sound machine. The bathroom had a deep tub and the water pressure and heat were amazing. It's just the tub was cracking / chipping where they had previously painted (sealed?) it which was not comfortable to sit on. =( The towels and sheets were fresh, and they did bring us extra thick pillows (much appreciated) but it took them a while to bring them up. For 250.00 a night, I'd rather take my money else where. I won't be staying there again if I ever make it back up to New York. (Penn station being right there was awesome though. Location was pristine. )"

"Their webpage shows nice pictures, the reality is different. The hotel is very run-down, ugly, smells.... really good location, but it was almost scary! The carpets dirty, stained, doors dirty, paint cracked and falling off walls. Thankfully our bathrooms and beds were clean; ubly, old dark bedspreads, dark carpet, made room look dark and dingy, bathroom old, rusty, hair blowers didn't work, various electrical sockets did not work throughout the rooms. No critters or bugs found at all! clean bathroom and beds. Not all front desk staff was nice, not customer service driven and not of help when questions were asked. Was it they didn't know or they had an attitude - we don't know, but the experience was not good. In order to store luggage we had to PAY! $4/bag - CASH - they would not take credit card for this, AND drag it ourselves to their basement!!! Filthy area and storage place,attendant was a nice young man, though. No complimentary breakfast, coffee/tea, no coffee pot, microwave or refrigerator in rooms, no wifi in rooms. As big as hotel is and as much $ as it generates, I'm sure they can invest in refurbishing it, change rugs, paint, update it. It's really ugly, really! Room service did come daily, beds made daily, garbage removed, fresh towels! Really good location - easy access to so much! Comfortable beds, great water pressure in shower - adjustable shower head, good shower massage.."

"Excellent location Impressive lobby Understaffed at the front desk - there was a long line of people waiting to check in Appreciated the left luggage area, as we arrived before our room was ready Once in our room we found it to be a little past it's prime - sort of shabby The bathroom, in particular needed to be updated and the light fixtures needed to be dusted Very comfortable bed Room temperature - comfortable The breakfast room was always very crowded, but I liked the pastries and the coffee was always welcome! Access to the computer and printer was invaluable - every morning I printed out our itineray and directions My VERY favorite thing about our hotel? I met the lovliest people from all over the world during our stay. "The hotel rooms were grossly misrepresented! Our first room on the 3rd floor was filthy, and we're still not convinced that it had been cleaned between the last guests leaving and us arriving! They moved us to the 17th floor, but didn't even realize that the room they gave us had one king bed (there were 3 of us), so we had to inform them what kind of room it was! The 17th floor was much nicer in appearance. We finally ended up on the 12th floor, which was still very dirty, but we were tired of moving! Please don't be fooled by the pictures. The lobby is impressive, but this hotel is OLD (built in 1919) and in need of huge rennovation. When we return to NYC, we will stay elsewhere."

"It might seem confusing w/my ratings all over the map. I've traveled extensively and, based on that, come the ratings. NYC is expensive.The beds and linens were clean and changed daily as were the towels in the bathroom. There was always hot water too. Their vacuum cleaners must be as old as the hotel as it was on about day 3 that we realized that they were indeed vacuuming as something white (sock lint) that was on the floor when we left was in a different location when we came back. We wore socks when we walked around the room. The physical location is as good as it gets! And that's a really big deal! We went to NYC to DO NYC and were only in our hotel to sleep."

"Too many CONs vs PROs to know where to begin. Will stay elsewhere in future. The Hotel Penn was built in 1917 & has probably NOT been updated since. It should be torn down, but I heard that a major developer is interested in the property, so NOTHING is being done to the old gal until the deal is final. CONs: I am 67 y/o and the bathroom fixtures were WAY before my time. Water pressure was inadequate, tub was ancient with many cracks & patches, no counter to set stuff on, ancient toilet that didn't want to flush completely! Towels were so harsh, they tore off my skin. Only 1 lamp (on night stand, none on desk), only 1 hard chair (for desk), NO WIFI, very old TV. Carpet horribly spotted. Thin pillows. No luggage rack. Hole in walls, peeling plaster. Extremely long lines for check-in. Costly internet fees & available only in the Lobby, no coffee maker/fridge/micro in room, Pictures do NOT represent the actual rooms! PROs: 12 elevators, decent mattress, slept well. corner rooms are larger, decent size closet w/hangers, includes blower dryer/iron/ironing board/radio alarm clock, very thin walls, filthy windows, light bulbs burnt out in room, no evidence of bed bugs, housekeeping adequate, express check-out, tour & show desk (concierge). Location is good."

"My friend and I were attending the Bruce Springsteen concert at Madison Square Garden, and work about 4 blocks away, so we thought that this would be a convenient place to stay. Well, it was, in terms of location. In terms of everything else, though, it was pretty disappointing. The line to check in was 30 minutes long. The room reminded me of a hotel in the middle of nowhere Poland that I stayed in about 20 years ago. The hotel hasn't been renovated or updated in what looks like forever. The hotel room doors are originals from 1919 (and they have a plaque saying that), which gave it some charm, but I didn't think that the interior rooms would match the doors. The rooms are very basic. The walls are white and full of scuff marks. The bedspread was fine, but the blanket underneath, although clean, had holes in it. The room was small. The hallway carpets had stains on them that looked like vomit (although it was probably some bleach of some kind). The tv was the big, non-flat screen kind. Now don't get me wrong... I didn't mind that much. I stayed, and I didn't complain. But being a big hotel in such a prime location in NYC, I sincerely expected more. This is not in any way, shape or form a luxury experience. If you are looking for big, clean and comfortable, this is not what you want. If you want a place to crash for a night and don't care about what the room looks like, then this is fine."

"What an amazing hotel. Our room was clean and beautiful, and the staff was always so very helpful. If ever we need anything, we had it. We arrived 4 hours early for check in due to our flight, and they upgraded our room for free and let us check in early! The location was magnificent!!! We could walk almost anywhere. "I have submitted this before, so not sure why it didn't get to you. my experience was very fine. I arrived in a timely matter but was not really pleased with pick up experience, but I was partly at fault because I did not have my voucher. The driver was a little abrupt and rude, but finally trip was on the way to hotel. Hotel was clean but shabby, but what I expected. The room was shabby but clean. "The hotel staff were friendly enough but the hotel itself is in need of serious cosmetic work. I must say that staying with you for this period was the worst hotel stay I have experienced in my life.
We had requested a 1:30 pm check in and had to line up on 4 separate occasions to get a room, in total likely for a 3 hour duration.
The first time we got a room it was a queen size but the fellow wanted us to look at it anyway. That wasn't what we wanted and I promptly returned for a room with a queen size bed. This room wasn't ready but fortunately the housekeeping lady was very accommodating and got it ready in about 15 minutes.
Your front desk staff likely should also take courses in politeness and coutesy. I am not sure if I met any that weren't rude. You need to have them trained properly and have likely twice as many of them working.
Your continental breakfasts are an animal zoo being too packed and everyone running into each other. Who wants to put up with that? You need to set up more rooms and man them with with more personnel.
We will never return to your hotel again and if asked will never recommend.
By-the-way, the cold water faucet in the bathroom sink can not be turned on.
Our stay at your hotel put a great big damper on our New York visit and we will not return.

"Check in was very quick and efficient. Room was functional and clean, but a bit shabby. Headboard was falling apart, pillows were thin, but the overall impression was good for the money you spend. Very convenient to everything and staff was very efficient and friendly. I look at the shabbiness as antique, so it didn't bother me because the cleanliness made up for it. It is close to everything you would possibly need. Shopping, subway lines, restaurants. ANYTHING in NYC is at your footsteps.. Would return if the deal was right... :)"

"On a recent trip to New York City, we stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania. The room overall was OK. We really didn't spend much time in the room anyway while we were there. The room was rather stuffy and the sound of the toilet being flushed from the rooms next to us would wake us up sometimes. If you are looking for fancy, then this place may not be for you."

"If location is what you are looking for...then this is the hotel. But that is all it had to offer. Horrible service, smell, and room condition! The carpet wreaked of cigarette smoke, the bathroom doorframe was eaten away from rust and the door itself wouldnt shut from the water warping it. AND there were BUGS!!! So gross!! The bed had almost no spring left in it and half of the bed frame had been removed??!! OH! and the bed didnt even have a fitted sheet on it! What is that?! The hallway smelled like and vinegar and was extremely dark (im guessing to hide the dirt). Our key stopped working after the first night and it was no easy task to get another. Good thing New York has so much to offer we were able to stay out of the room for the majority of the trip. Im sure at one time this place may have been quite charming but there is no charm left just filth!!"

"One cannot beat the price for sure! The room was huge and there were only 2 small occasional chairs so sitting on the bed was the only comfortable option.
The plates covering the electrical outlets were hanging off...the hair dryer did not work and a couple of light bulbs were missing from the lamps.

"I was very afraid and worried about all the bashing and bad reviews I seen on Hotel Pennsylvania. I was expecting to see roaches and falling paint chips and a dirty room. I began to second guess myself but it was already to late to cancel my reservation without being penalized. Checkin was not bad, the front desk clerks were very nice and helpful. The lobby was nice, and when I reached the 13th floor where my room was I was expecting a HOTSEL as I read on one review. It was not bad for the price and very clean. A few cracks here and there but what is expected for a building this age. My room was rather small, everything worked and it was spotless. The maids were helpful. Check out was a breeze. The location could not have been any better. Close to Timesquare, Penn station, 5th Ave, Macys, Central park, Madison Square Garden. What else could you ask for. Definitely a good bang for your buck."

"I was in a King room, 13th floor with window overlooking the Empire State building. I had a small refrigerator and desk. The room was clean but needs new carpet, painting and new bathroom door. The maid service was good; towels and linens clean and neat. Ice machine with vending was not too far from my room and was well stocked. The best draw to this hotel was its proximity to Penn Station, midtown, subway entry and price! It would be nice if they would offer free WiFi. If you care more about the beauty, size and modernness of your hotel and room than the price; then this is not the hotel for you! This hotel is all about location and price!"

"Room was very clean and kept that way by household staff. Room appeared to have been recently repainted. Mattress and box springs were brand new. More than enough towels changed everyday. Sure, this place is older but you can't beat the location and value offered by BookIt. Bug-free too!!! If a few dim lights and carpet stains will spoil a trip to NYC for you, then stay home. Front desk staff were pleasant and helpful in spite of the overwhelming amount of daily incoming guests that we observed. I will come back here any time."

Front desk staff were uncommunicative, if there was a language barrier I suggest as I speak English this was on their behalf. Concierge desk was too busy to obtain the correct information and had to find it ourself. After traveling the eastern side of USA, city and country I found this to be the poorest in customer service and quality. The room itself needs overhauling with either less or smaller furniture. It was a bed in a box. I could not fault the guest services with our room made up each day & fresh towels. The bellmen at the front need more direction and better customer service."

"My stay here was pretty decent, there was no loud noises from neighbors, the cleaning crew was very repectful of my belongings and they also kept my room which was the Pen 5000 suite pretty clean.
