"This was a great place to stay in NYC. I went to grad school in NYC several years ago, but lived in the upper west side. I never really explored the lower east village so made a conscious decision to stay in an area with which I was not too familiar. It was great! There are a lot of good, cheap eats within walking distance and lots of subway/bus stops which make getting around the city convenient. I especially loved the bakery right across the street which had awesome chocolate danishes! We ate out most of the time, and were able to warm up our leftovers in the mini-kitchen. This was great to have this option because my wife felt sick the first night and didn't want to go out to eat. I was able to buy some soup from a place around the corner and took it back to her.
The place is really clean and the pictures posted accurately represent the place. The only issue was the street noise. I usually have no problems sleeping anywhere, but my wife had a hard time with all the street noise, and thin walls separating our rooms. Be prepared to bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper!"

"I had a terrific, clean room with a fantastic view. It's perfectly located in the East Village. For the price, it was fantastic.
Lack of a typical front desk is a bit unnerving and at moments inconvenient. Storing bags at check out was a real problem. But hopefully they will work those kinks out."

"I was very skeptical about the hotel after I booked it because I was unfamiliar with this area in Manhattan; the reviews I'd read made the check-in process sound inefficient; and the shuttle company I booked for transportation from/to the airport did not seem to know where it was. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was someone at the front desk to check me in and the neighborhood is very cool and I felt safe while there. The shuttle service was the only negative experience I had during the whole trip. The room looks exactly like the pictures online, and we saved a ton of money by using the furnished dishes, fridge, and microwave to prepare breakfast and dinner at the hotel. The N, R, 4, and 6 subway lines were about 3-4 blocks (5-10 min walk) away, and we were able to get everywhere we wanted in the city via subway. There is a deli/grocer's market on nearly every corner, and we just bought fresh fruit and prepared meals to eat in the hotel. If you're into vintage items, there are a ton of vintage/antique stores, as well as trendy little boutiques on the same street as the hotel, and in the east village neighborhood. Because we were away from the tourist-y areas like Time Square, I felt like I had a true NYC experience.
Only issues with the hotel were the lack of a soap holder or shower caddy in the shower, and you can hear EVERYTHING outside the hotel, especially the ambulances constantly going up 1st Ave to a nearby hospital. By the 3rd night I was getting used to the noise, but unfortunately, it was our last night there, so I didn't sleep too well during the trip.
That said, for the price and location, I will definitely stay at the East Village Hotel again!"

"I have no idea how the hotel is. When I arrived there was a person in the lobby who said there was 'a leak in my room' and I was being sent elsewhere. This was a disaster as it made me late for an important meeting (even with 1 1/2 hours 'extra' time!) and the new place was not walking distance to the main meeting I came to NYC for, as planned when I reserved here. Then I get home to phone messages that the issue was 'overbooking!' So they can't even get their story straight. The only silver lining is that the new place was very nice, even if in the wrong neighborhood, and I did not have to pay more."

"I have stayed here twice and really enjoyed it both times.
Beds are Very Comfy and its amazing how the shades
block out all the light when you want to sleep. The first
time I stayed here, I was skeptical because of the keypad
and instructions about the entrance on 9th, but it is a
breeze and there was someone in the lobby every day
I was there. The staff was very helpful! It's very clean
and has everything you need in a hotel room. It was easy
to block out street noise with the fan running constantly,
but it was hard to block out The music they play
while they are open. I would request a room away from
them, if possible. It is Fabulous to have one downstairs
to get coffee. Their granola bars are the best I've ever had.
I will try to stay here every time I come because it's so
convenient to everything!!"

"We stayed 2 nights at East Village Hotel on 9th St/1st Ave in NYC. It is a boutique type hotel. Newly renovated with very nice furniture, clean and a full kitechen (we never used the kitchen). The room is small like any hotels in Manhattan. The location is quite good, less than 5 min walk to L subway and is very close to alphabet district with a lot of good restaurants. We were at 3rd floor.
The most unique aspect of this boutique hotel is that it is a total self-service hotel. You need to key in a code to enter the tiny hotel lobby, and then use the iPAD to get room # and code, but the iPAD has no power, non-functional and didn't work the whole 2 days we where there. There is a phone on the desk you can call to get the room # and code as we did. No elevator, so be prepared to carry your luggages all the way up to your room. You can't store your luggage either since no regular clerk there 24/7, but there is a clerk there at limited specified hrs. There is a parking garage on 9th St between 2nd and 3rd Ave.
The room has very poor sound insulation (no double glass pane), and you can hear all the talks and street cars at midnight to wake us up. That is the weakest aspect of this hotel. The bed is on the soft side for us. We could not get a good sleep during the 2 nights stay there becuase of the very poor sound insulation. That is the reason that we don't recommend this hotel to friends.
But if you are a night owl and wear earbuds during sleep and don't mind the noise and self-service, you will like the hotel."

"Our room was a little small, but other than that it was absolutely fabulous! Clean and very modern room with a little kitchen, which you probably wont use because its so convenient to small restaurants, cafes and pizza shops (including momofuku around the corner!) Its also only a few blocks away from the subway! Rooms were also cleaned daily and even though a receptionist was there 24/7, they were their during the day and were always very nice and helpful.
The only other issue with this place would be its need for a lift. Dragging a suitcase up two flights of stairs is never fun. But I would definitely come back to this place if I had a chance!"

"This hotel is in a great location. Everything you need is all right here - bakery, grocery store, wine store, nice bars, dive bars, coffee shop, pizza, etc. Other than the internet not working the whole first day,( I called the number to complain and never got a return phone call), the room was great. Very clean. The 'front desk' worker was here when we arrived and room was not ready (we were early). She put our luggage away for us. We were on the top floor (4 floors) and carrying our luggage up that many floors sucked, but when not carrying the luggage, the stairs were not bad. Kitchen came in handy for breakfast. Will definitely stay here again when we come back to this area of the city! It is adorable and quite a bargain."

"I was INCREDIBLY skeptical about staying at this hotel. Initially, I was very pleased with the location and price of the room. But as I got closer to the trip I was really nervous about the fact that my confirmation email did not have a phone number for the hotel. I even googlemapped the location, 147 1st Ave, and this is when I freaked out. The street view was of a wall. So, naturally, I assumed that I was scammed. My friend and I decided to go and check it out and if it was too sketchy we would stay somewhere else. I read that I was supposed to enter on 9th street from another review, not from the directions on my confirmation email. We figured out that we had to let ourselves into the entrance. It was weird. We didn't have a room number or a code to get into our room so we needed to speak to someone. The iPad kiosk was not working so we had no way of figuring out where we were supposed to go. We called the 'customer service' number that was taped to the phone at the desk of the building. There was NOBODY at the front desk. After we called about 3 times, it took a good 30 minutes before anyone was able to tell us where our room was and how to get into it. ULTIMATELY, we were quite satisfied with the hotel, our room was a great size, the bathroom was clean, the kitchen was nice. Other than the awful service with the self check-in, my only other complaint was that the shower did not get hot enough. I would definitely stay again, now knowing how to get myself into the hotel, but it is a big turn-off that we had to figure it out on our own."

The price was great and affordable especially considering the fact that i booked a package deal, it was very clean and had a full kitchen, wifi, nice tv, heating/air conditioning that you can control urself n it was pretty quiet. The only down falls were the view (of another building across the street, no lobby and the people at 'front desk' don't stay all night, there are no keys(u need a code for the front door as well as room) and i didn't get any room service at all :( HOWEVER overall this place was great, stores all around, 'front desk' staff very friendly and I will be returning again if I'm in the East Village"

"okay so i read the pros and cons prior-wife and i took a chance on an area we usually don't stay in. Area is very cool-easy access to bus (outfront) and subway (3min walk to 14th st). despite previous reviews-hotwater was aplenty and cool thing, bathroom mirror never fogs up. Problems: walls and floors are thin and late night party goers and/or people in room directly over will make you scream. Staff rarely at front desk (some days and some evenings till midnight 'they said'). Came in 10:45pm one night and staff was at desk-i asked why she said we stay till midnight tonight. Came back down at 11:15pm to ask a question and she was gone. Room combo was changed and locked us out after 2days and we had to try and get in our room at 1030pm with no staff on site-there is a number to call-i would not actually recommend this hotel just for that i could possibly stay here again, but only because i know the nuances NOW. I have now taken the shuttle/train/bus/limo to the airport (Laguardia) -i can now say it takes the same time 1-1.25 hours. Last time took the 1st ave bus (special-doesn't stop at all streets) all the way to east Harlem to the bus stop for M60 (direct airport bus)"

"Beware beware beware! Upon arrival, we waited for a total of 60 min locked outside of the hotel in 10 degree weather. Nobody was present to let us in and the receptionist refused to help, as she claimed to work for another hotel, and left us on hold. (A guest staying at the hotel finally let us in.) The iPad located in the lobby was out of service and after waiting an hour and a half we finally received the combination to our room. The room lacked a closet, bathroom shelves, as well as shower area shelves and did not resemble the picture whatsoever. Lastly, the hotel's location directly above a 24hr coffee shop blaring music at all hours of the night made sleeping a nightmare. My experience was absolutely horrendous and I had no other choice but to switch hotels. I would not go so far as to award this hotel 2 measely stars."

"I wanted to love it, however I doubt I will stay there again. The 24 hour coffee shop below pumps music 24/7 through the vents- it is like having an annoying radio on in your room.
Loved the kitchenette and the bed was comfortable. It was a really cute room.
I recommend putting a note in the rooms to let people know about the drawers under the bed. That is a great storage feature that I didn't see until I was leaving.
There was never enough hot water. Showers need a soap dish.

"I would love to give the East Village a glowing review. It is a comfortable, stylish, newly renovated 18 room hotel in a great neighborhood, BUT the water heater was broken and we had no hot water for 3 mornings in a row. As there is no full time desk clerk, we used email and phone messages to get assistance, but no one responded. When we were finally able to talk to the desk clerk, she said she was waiting for the 'super' to fix the problem which was finally fixed the day we left. From a first floor room there is a little bit of street noise pretty much 24/7 as it is a very busy corner, not enough to keep us awake however. The little kitchenette came in very handy. It is an easy walk to the 14th st subway stop. Lots of good inexpensive restaurants nearby. We used Super Shuttle from JFK and we were the 1st dropped off from the airport and the last pickup to the airport which was nice."

"Got back from seven day in Manhattan staying at the East Village Hotel.
Brand new. Wonderful, colorful location. Good good price.
Extremely clean and very functional with queen-sized bed and studio kitchen with everything a longtime visitor would need. Great bathroom.
You have to climb stairs without an elevator but we were on the second level (first floor of rooms) and it was very doable, even for my husband with two replaced knees. Very warm and friendly staff and the candy at the front desk was always appreciated after spending the day running around Manhattan. Nearby restaurants -- hundreds -- were mostly inexpensive and lovely ethnic food. East Village is a great place for watching people.
We would go back again."

The location is great, everything you need is steps away - coffee, market, pizza, restaurants, bars, boutiques, cabs, etc. The rooms are incredibly clean, efficient, studios. Definitely does not have the feel, or amenities, of a large hotel property. Instead you feel like you have an apartment in the neighborhhood. The lower rates makes this a good value for the no frills approach and I will definitely continue to book here."

"We were very skeptical about our booking, since this was a new place with hardly any reviews. To our pleasant surprise, this turned out to be a great vacation rental with a good size kitchenette (with pans and utensils) and a good size refrigerator. The location is perfect! The East Village has more of the college vibe feel but yet you get the experience the true NY without all the craziness. The subway is only a few blocks away and there's a ton of restaurants to experience (minus the $$$ from uptown/downtown). The coffee place next door, is awesome and it has great pastries and salads. If you can, go a few blocks east and try the noodle bar around the corner. There is also really good pizza at Artichokes, one of the best in the area as recommended by a tour guide!nOverall loved this place and will stay there again for sure!"

"I like the East Village - its not a Hotel but more of a vacation rental. There is maid service and a daytime clerk / manager. They are really good at what they do, excellent, clean apartment. Hard wood floors with a red brick wall decor and IKEA furnishings - truely a super place.
The apartments are over a great coffee house, 'Beans.' Its really good with excellent pastries and coffee. The benches in front of beans are excellent for hanging out and enjoying the locals.
There is a fairly good Pizza Place accross the street and a whole lot of neighborhood atmosphere. Lots of shops, little resturants and apartment buildings. This is a real New York experience type of place. You would never be able to pick out the Hotel from the street unless you are looking for it.
The East Village is my kind of place, blend in with the locals. - Check it out"

Much to our surprise the hotel was exactly as described. The rooms aren't the largest but comfortable for two people. They are modern in design and has up to date fixtures and electronics.
The only issue to mention was that we had to request wash cloths be placed in the room.
We would diffidently stay here again if visiting NYC.

"How pleasantly surprising! When I first booked this trip there weren't any reviews and I was so nervous that when I showed up, it would be a vacant building and that I had been scammed. I had my codes ready so I knew I had to have those. The rooms were the perfect size for my husband and I. I liked having my own bathroom as some of the cheaper hotels were communal. We were on the 3rd floor but since we only had carry ons, it was easy to get up the stairs. There was noise at night so if you are a light sleeper, recommend earplugs. There is a number listed that you can call once you get inside to the little lobby. A lot of NYers were curious as to what the place was. Overall, loved it!"

Highly recommend this to anyone, and we will stay again as long as the prices don't go up! Being a self serve type hotel, I doubt the prices will. By self serve I mean you check yourself in, and there is no concierge or anything like that. But they do have house keeping rooms were cleaned every single day."

"Hotel was in an excellent location with lots of restaurants close by and the subway a short 10 minute walk. The place looked exactly like the photo, it's small but clean and very modern. My only suggestion would be adding a box of tissues in the room and that they disable the ability to buzz the rooms from the street. The first night there a couple coming home at 3am buzzed our room by mistake. The air conditioning is a life saver in the summer -- it's so muggy do not stay at a play without it. The person at the desk is there 10am to 7pm. The shampoo/conditioner/moisturizer/body wash were the H2O brand and were really nice. Also the desk downstairs has a phone that you can use to make local calls for taxis, dinner reservations etc. They also have city maps on the desk. BTW, they also had signs for the door made while we were there -- make up room and the do not disturb. If you're a light sleeper bring ear plugs like I did, otherwise the city noise outside will keep you up. It's not that loud but I'm a light sleeper. Great value."

"Before I criticize this hotel, let me say that the hotel itself was in a great location, was very clean, comfortable and contained all the in-room amenities that we needed (to include a fully stocked kitchenette which we found very useful). Also, the hotel is in a great location in East Village! We were only a short walk to numerous great bars and restaurants and multiple subway lines. Also, at a price point of $150 per night, and what you got for it, the value cannot be beat.
Now for the bad....
Let me just say that I almost cancelled my booking before the trip due to what I would call a seemingly 'shady' non-existence online and having had a very concerning difficulty in contacting hotel personnel prior to the trip. I eventually learned that my difficulty was attributed to the hotel being new and already having switched management companies. After booking my room, I attempted to contact the hotel through the number and email provided and found that both of them were no longer valid. I even confirmed the number and email through the very basic online website and confirmed that neither of them are valid any longer. The only way that I was able to contact somebody was calling the Flat Iron hotel, which I determined form the web address of the invalid email contact I had. I found that the owner of this hotel also managed East Village and they gave me a contact number for somebody that provided the info I needed.
It seems that any phone numbers for this hotel are actually personal cell phone numbers to various people affiliated with it. Every time that I called somebody that asked 'Who is this?' as if they did not understand how I got the number. On one occasion I left a voicemail but received a call back by a subject asking if I had just called him. And be aware that the hotel is not staffed full time...and they do not guarantee that somebody will be there if you need to drop off baggage early.
If you book this hotel, make sure that you have verifiable contact info prior to paying. If you can get into the hotel without issues, and don't happen to need further assistance, then the hotel may work for you. But if you are willing to spend the extra money, it way be worth it to stay at a more reputable and stable location."

"The East Village Hotel is not an Hotel it is a serviced apartment. On a very busy street so is extremely noisy. There is no staff on hand, only a phone number to call, no elevator, no help with luggage. The Access code did not work. The Lobby looked one morning like a homeless person was sleeping there, as guest left the front door open.
While the rooms are lovely and fresh, very comfortable, the lack of sleep from the traffic noise was terrible. I was on a business trip and there was nowhere to put my computer, no table or desk I sat for 3 hours working with my computer on a chair sitting on top of the DVD player huntched over the screen.
when I called to inquire if I had somehow missed where the table was, I was told that it was a work in progress and that there was no table and no room for one, Silly to have a full kitchen and no where to sit and eat. unless you were eating on the bed.???? Needs a bedside table not a shelf two feet away with a lamp 3 feet away. all in all very disappointing.

"Def would recommend. We got a great price on our weekend. It is everything they advertise. Location in East Village is awesome. It was above a coffee shop, across the street from a pizza and donut joint. Caddy corner is where our tour bus stopped n
Have no complaints..... Steps from any food or bars you would need. Surprisingly quiet at night. Room was modern and clean. Had everything we needed and more. Fully equipped. It was small as we expected but perfect for 2 people on the go for the weekend.
Will stay again as long as prices dont get crazy....."

"Though their online presence is sketchy at best, the East Village Hotel is an awesome place to stay.
You are given a code to enter the lobby and another to enter your room, so there is no possibility of losing your key. There is no staff onsite and the hotel phone number takes you to a personal voice mailbox, though they are fairly responsive via email. This didn't turn out to be a problem.
The room itself is clean, cute, and trendy. Our studio came equipped with a kitchenette (minifridge, microwave, sink, 2 burner stove, mini-dishwasher, full set of utensils and pots/pans) and a surprisingly light, airy, spacious bedroom. We definitely enjoyed our stay.

"The room was very nice. Perfect for what we needed. Had some issues checking in with the ipad so we had to make a phone call. We also had issues with the door to our room and called once again... Once we called them though it was quick to resolve."

"This is part 2 of my review %u2013 a second reservation and a second week at the East Village Hotel.
I was moved back to my original room with my second reservation. The original room was definitely newer and fresher.
Beyond the initial check in and door locking problems, the second week of my stay involved a lot of noise. One night there was extremely loud drilling and hammering from 3am to 4am. I couldn't tell where the noise was coming from, but it seemed to be coming from below. Maybe the coffee shop on the ground floor was doing some work? Another night, an alarm went off and rang from about 4am to 6am. I have no idea where that noise was coming from. Needless to say that by the end of my stay I was exhausted from getting no sleep for 2 of my 5 nights there.
There was also very minimal housekeeping. My sheets were never changed and although my towels were changed (sometimes) there was no actual cleaning. And for some reason, they took away my face towel after the first night and never brought another.
With no staff at all on site, when something goes wrong there is no one around to help.
Finally, there seemed to be a problem with people leaving the front door (leading to the street) open. Surely we need the extra door of security in the East Village! Well in fact I'm pretty sure that the swanky leather couch that sat in the lobby area was stolen during my stay. The staff put in a wooden table and a couple of plastic chairs in its place, but they really looked out of place.
In all, lots of bumps and hiccups during my two-week stay. I paid a rate of $119 per night so I could deal with the problems. If I had paid much more I would have felt swindled.

"The room was nice, problems are, no elevator.
I checked in on Tuesday eve. they could not find my reservation, I had to show them a conformation.
The woman at the door helped me up, she took a very light bag and expected me to give her a tip, I did not, she did not do anything for it.
My room was not cleaned till Friday, two days without being cleaned. I had to ask for room to be cleaned.
Location is good, the room is nice, but no alarm clock, no real chairs, no tissues. This does have strong possibilities, however, needs work and need to work harder and have a full time staff."

"This boutique hotel is located in a surprisingly fine location--trendy lower East side Village with many restaurants and little quaint shops nearby. The hotel does not have an elevator, so book for lowest possible floor. The rooms are extremely tiny, but exceptionally clean, modern, and well laid out. Staff (when they are there--which is rarely) are friendly. Security code to get into building very simple and easy--never had a moment's problem with the code--my 11 year old granddaughter operated the code each time. Room code the same way. Easy. I highly recommend this hotel if you want low-cost, safe, clean hotel room The Bean (coffee shop) next door and below the hotel is amazing. Wonderful staff and nice selection of morning/evening coffees, sandwiches and desserts. The CitySights buss passes right by. Alarm goes off and stays ringing sometimes for an hour--till staff gets there to turn off, but otherwise an affordable, good place to stay."

"We had a great time at the hotel in the east village. One change that could be made is a fold out table under the tv. With there being a kitchen there is no place to eat a meal. the small shelf under the tv is un-usable as an dining area.
Need some shelves and a bin in the bathroom. Also to take a bit more time washing the pillows. The one we had was obviously 'pre-loved'.
Apart from that it was fine."

"This review is for the first week of a two week stay: iPad check in does not work so you will need to call to get into the building and into your room.
The first room assigned to me had a door that would not lock. I didn't discover this until the next morning. I called the 24/7 number to ask for the lock to be fixed and the number was temporarily disconnected. Eventually the housekeeper arrived and moved me to another room. The second room was not as clean or new-looking but at least the door locked. The second room also had a television that only worked intermittently. It was fixed once, but after that I didn't bother reporting the issue since there is no staff on site at all and someone has to come over to the building to deal with any issues that come up. After that no major problems.
This hotel is a great value if you can get a rate under $150 a night. Not so great if you pay more than that."

"Cool spot with great space planning - the room felt bigger than it actually was! Has lots of kitchen amenities but didn't get the chance to use them as the location is central to so many places right outside the door. Bathroom shelves and storage needs some more thought but definitely would stay again."

"I had a little bit of difficulty getting into the building. The access code had me stuck outside for about 10 minutes (and in the 95 degree weather, it felt brutal). Once I was inside, the iPad checkin wasn't working, so that took another phone call. Other than those few early hiccups, everything else was great. The room was comfortable, and really well decorated. I really enjoyed my stay."

"This was a great stay for my first time trip to NY. A very innovative, self sustaining way to travel and lodge. We were emailed the check-in info, and all necessary codes. Arrived a little early, called the number at the lobby, and someone came over to let us put our luggage in the room while we roamed around till the actual 3PM check in. Accommodations were clean and new. Felt like we were temporary residents to the East Village neighborhood. Subway was a coupla blocks away allowing access to everything.
Stumbled across this deal on Travel Zoo, saw some of those questionable reviews due to the prior grand opening initial concerns...nothing doing. This was a fine stay, and a wonderful trip to NY that will remain a wonderful memory."

"First time to stay in the Big Apple. We really liked the hotel. It is not a Hotel in the strict sense. There is a key pad entry to the building with no reception or staff on hand. We could not get in, but rang the number and a very helpful voice at the end of the phone gave us the details for entry number and the key pad number for the room.
We were on the first floor and our room was great. Clean tidy and well appointed. We had a small kitchen area in the room. The bathroom was small. Needs a shelf over the sink for your stuff. Bed was really comfortable and big flat screen TV on the wall. Free WiFi which was good speed and easy to get onto.
The downside is the noise. Not being a city dweller we found it really noisy. The coffee shop below started up at about 6:30 and our room was the floor above the coffee shop. They start playing music when they open until the close (V late on Saturday). Add that to the fire trucks ambulances an police sirens and it does not mean you get the most restful of sleeps.
Having said that we would stay there again. The east village is a great place to be based and the cost of the room was very reasonable."
