The Cheshire is a unique hotel/inn that dates back to the 60's when people you to say "groovy" or "cool" and call each other "baby" regardless of gender! But it is done in an Elizabethan style and the outside is Tudor era motif? It sounds strange but it WORKS!! The rooms are all named after English authors such as Dickens, JM Barrie (Peter Pan), etc. and they are spacious. Prices are very reasonable and it is a rare find!

This hotel is charming! But the very best part of it (besides great service and excellent location 3 blocks or so from the park that houses the zoo, the art museum, etc.) is the 4 (yes FOUR) excellent restaurants on site. We were so grateful to have restaurants on location that served great meals. There is an Olde English pub that serves excellent pub fare, a whole foods style sandwich shop with great organic selections, a fine dining Italian place with a unique menu, and yet another restaurant... I stayed in the "Death on the Nile" room for my daughter's sixteenth birthday. First of all, I booked the room for 4, through a guest service agent. They didn't bother to tell me that there is only one king size bed. When I called them after check in they did offer to bring up a roll away. How many people do they let stay in that room? Their website said that the pool opens May 1st but later I discovered that it doesn't open until May 31st after calling to confirm and it's not heated. The room w... Read more

Nate was our bartender extraordinare for this event. He went above and beyond with everything he did. He set up a bar outside for us and we had a private happy hour, it was so lovely. It was really a wonderful experience and I would recommend anyone to plan an event/happy hour/party with him. The Cheshire is one of my fave places because of him!

My husband grew up in St. Louis and had driven past the Cheshire Inn many times back in the day, so we were really looking forward to staying here--especially after seeing the reviews of other guests. Now I wonder if we were talking about the same hotel. Driving in at night, we did not get the best impression. There was a loud party going on in the parking lot of the neighboring restaurant and no parking space available in the garage by the elevator. I say "by the elevator" because we had to... Read more

It's hard to describe this place accurately. You really have to experience it yourself. The atmosphere and the room we stayed in was perfect. We stayed in the treasure island suite which is beautiful with its cozy fireplace and its Victorian era feel. The real spotlight goes to the staff. Lawanda and Antonio at the front desk were the kindest, most helpful people I have ever met at any establishment I have ever stayed at. Then when my wife and I go into the Fox and Hound pub on site it continu... Read more

The Cheshire is a charming, family friendly hotel conveniently located near many St. Louis attractions. The staff made us feel welcome and were quick to respond to any request. They have a "treasure hunt" for children which my grandchildren absolutely loved! We would definitely stay here again!

We've visited 3 times in the past couple of years. The stay in the Treasure Island Room was the worst. This room is one of the theme rooms and best in this hotel. The last visit was in the Blake room and there were some misses but not like this. We love the hotel decor. We love the one off uniqueness. We love the breakfast being a cut above if they could just keep it stocked like I'm sure management intends. The location next to Forest Park is definitely the reason to stay here. The front desk staff were very friendly and efficient. Self-parking for $10 seems a bit excessive. The room was large and clean. The biggest problem is that the room faced Clayton Road and was very noisy. I realize that this is due to the "charm" of the decor, but the cost to stay here is not cheap, and the single-pane windows should be replaced. The continental breakfast was pretty mediocre with little in the way of f... Read more

If you want a charming, interesting place to stay near Wash U consider the Cheshire. This is a 70's./faux Tudor relic that has been renovated into a great boutique hotel, but retains that funky charm. The service is outstanding; Mitu at the front desk and Patrick, one of the managers were incredibly helpful when we checked in, and the service was great for the rest of the stay. The valet parking guys were great as well.

I stayed at The cheshire June 14,15 and checked out on the 16th. I normally really enjoy my stay here but I should have switched my room upon arrival. My room was very close to Clayton Road and it was noisy due to the traffic. I have stayed here 3 times previously and never had an issue. Front desk is always very poilte and friendly. The bar downstairs, The Fox and Hound is always a terrific place to watch the game and grab a drink. Looking forward to my next trip to The Cheshire.

First impressions were positive, Carley was helpful and welcoming at the front desk. The room was clean but the bathroom was clearly not properly cleaned as there were toenails left in the sink. We had a wonderful stay at The Cheshire for a long weekend with our eight year old daughter. The British literary theme was charming. There were elegant food and beverage options onsite, friendly staff, artisan chocolates and ever-present coffee, a nice pool with comfortable cabanas, and a scavenger hunt that our daughter thoroughly enjoyed. It was a place where couples, bachelor parties, dogs, and families peacefully coexisted. Highly recommend.

Were going to the Muny and tried this hotel because of its location. Shuttle to Muny very convenient. But from the time we checked in until we left we were disgusted with the filthy conditions. Our choice to stay here was more of a convenience than anything else (just down the road from an event), but were pleasantly - and thoroughly - surprised with everything this hotel has to offer. For the first time we traveled with our dog. The hotel was perfect and staff friendly and helpful. They gave out treats, a dog bed & dish for use in the room. It is located in a walkable area and near Forest Park which was a good area for dog walking. Bed was comfortable and room quiet.

I've stayed at the Cheshire on numerous occasions, and this time decided to try a "Novelty Suite". These themed rooms offer larger rooms, sitting areas, and a jacuzzi tub. The room was incredible, we had dinner next door from Basso, and relaxed the evening away in our tub. Breakfast on Sunday morning was really nice with "upscale" offerings and great coffee! The staff here is always friendly and accommodating. Can't wait to go back!

This is a nice boutique hotel with great access to the Forest Park area of St. Louis. We stayed for one night to go to a show at the Fox and really enjoyed it. The rooms are spacious and clean with good bedding. It's easy to access the Fox and lots of other activities in the area if you are staying longer. The front desk staff was friendly and courteous as was every staff member I came into contact with. The hotel is themed for English writers and each room is named for one with a copy of their ... This was our second stay at the Cheshire. We booked here for our latest trip to STL because our last experience at the Cheshire (three years ago) was good. We were disappointed this time. The hotel has not been well-maintained. The carpets were worn throughout and our room seemed "tired". There was a cigarette burn on the chair in our room. The bathroom wasn't very clean. There was dust in the corners of the bathroom, and red mold stains in the crevices in the shower. The bath mat had black stai... Read more

This is the kind of place that people tell stories about when they talk about beautiful buildings that were somehow saved from the clutches of an evil developer and given a second life. It seems so out of place of the highway next to a gas station, but so glad it has survived. It's one part historical, and one part quirky make for a refreshing change of pace from the typical cookie cutter hotel. The kids had a lot of fun exploring and doing the scavenger hunt. I have stayed at the Cheshire ~20 times over the past 10 years. The property was renovated over that time and the improvements (upgraded bathrooms, etc), coupled with the excellent location, made the Cheshire a great destination hotel for business or fun things to do in St. Louis city, Washington University or Clayton/West County. During my most recent trip it seemed like the property is really slipping, mainly in the areas of maintenance and general amenities. My room was not as clean as I wo... Read more

If you are high maintenance this hotel is not for you, but if you love hotels with character you won't be disappointed. I stay here every time I come to St. Louis & this time Madison hooked us up with a poolside upgrade. LOVE being poolside!!!!! The pool is not large but has a cool deck with bar service. You're also out of the way of the downtown crowds.

My wife and I stayed here for a night to get away from our family during an extended trip to visit her family here in Saint Louis. Let's get the minor negatives out of the way. The Inn is located on a fairly busy street and if your room is on the street side (as ours was), you will hear it. The regular rooms are fine, although the bathrooms are a bit small. Also, note that it is on Clayton ROAD, not Clayton AVENUE. Google Maps missed this and we drove around aimlessly for a few minutes. Tha... Read more

We really thought this place was well-situated in relation to downtown St. Louis. It's not too far, but not right in the middle of things. It's also right on the border of Forest Park. They will even loan you a bicycle to ride in the park or a kite to fly there. There are games and puzzles in the parlor. The rooms are all themed on English writers. We liked all that. There were, however, some things that we definitely did NOT like. Apart from the front desk (they were wonderful), service here wa... Read more

The interesting thing about this classic Inn is their literature themed rooms. We are staying in the Tolkien themed room complete with the Lord of the Rings book to read. The room is spacious and the updated bathroom is great. We make this our home base for every visit or trip through Saint Louis. Our last stay was in Jane Austin themed room. A great breakfast is included.

The Cheshire is not your average hotel. It has a great deal of personality with large English portraits and heavy old fashion furniture. My room, the Salomne Suite was updated and chic although Salomne apparently beheaded a king I believe and there are somewhat less than romantic artwork on the walls. Which was actually pretty fabulous! My favorite part of the stay was the excellent fresh fruit salad for breakfast to say nothing of being part of Boundary, a fantastic restaurant on the property .

The beds were very comfortable. The continental breakfast was standard with cereal, toast and bagels, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs and mini-sausages. The coffee was quite good. All the old amenities were still there, but not to the same level of quality. The gourmet breakfast was a great way to start the morning, if and when we caught it at the right time. Charm is one thing, dirt is another. There were dust webs in one corner of the ceiling, dust on all horizontal surfaces and there was significant dust, debris and toe nail clippings on the floor by the bedside table. There was some hair on the bathroom floor. Despite wiping down the surfaces my asthma made sleeping just about impossible. I would have left the window open but there are no screens.
