We were visiting family nearby, and the hotels in the area are more expensive than we wish to pay. Higher Ground, while not inexpensive, was more mid-range. It is a former office building and remodeled very well. Interesting nooks, like a library on one floor, if you want to read/relax outside of your room. Our room was very clean and had everything we needed. The breakfasts were so-so. The Staff is very friendly and helpful. Our only complaint was the heating/cooling. Even tho we turned... Read more

Wonderful, charming, comfortable, clean, friendly, quiet, very well maintained. The breakfast was good with scrambled eggs, link sausage, cereals and breakfast breads. The garden was a beautiful little sanctuary, very peaceful. The location is very nice and convenient to the historic district with the Truman Home and Nolan Home right next door. This was my second visit to the Higher Ground and I will be back again.

We are really tired of staying in generic hotels, so this was a refreshing change of pace. The owners are helpful and pleasant folks, the rooms are comfortable, and the garden area very peaceful. Breakfast was plentiful and varied - yogurt, cereal, fruit, sweet rolls and such. On the weekend day we were provided with scrambled eggs and sausage, and on the weekday the owner made us Jimmy Dean sausage, egg & cheese biscuits. The color scheme in the hallways is bright and untypical. My only mi... Read more

Our room was quite small but contained comfortable chairs and a nice desk. There was a lounge area on our floor for relaxing and use of a public computer. An elevator was a very helpful. It is located within a block of the Truman home and we were able to walk to Independence Square from there. The furnishings were beautiful throughout the hotel.

What a quaint, quiet, out of the way place; yet so close to any place you might plan to visit in or around Kansas City. Upon checkin, you'll notice individually wrapped Jelly Belly beans! The rooms were small, yet very well appointed and the owners made good use of the available space. The bathrooms were small, as well, but again, the space was easy to navigate. Breakfast was served downstairs in a large, well-appointed dining area; the food available was quite adequate. An outside garden are... Read more

Those visiting Independence/Kansas City will do well to book here. It's a calm, well-maintained alternative to anonymous chain hotels. Conscientious proprietors...and the beautiful garden is a lovely place to relax after playing tourist. Excellent value.

This was a great hotel. The room was large with comfortable beds. The heating and air conditioning were central, not window units, with temperature controls in each room and a very quiet fan to blow air in. We were there in May and the air conditioner had not been turned on yet so I can't comment on that. We just opened the windows. It was in a quiet neighborhood so we did not experience any street noise. The hotel was across the street from Truman's house, and close to his library and muse... Read more

This comfortable spot in the heat of the Truman historic district is convenient to KC but with the peace of a small town. Beautiful garden enhances an ordinary, well maintained building. Our interior room was small but skylight made it workable. Free off street parking a plus.

On our way driving from New Jersey to Colorado, we were lucky enough to find this great spot for a quick overnight! Price was too reasonable to pass up! Decorated so beautifully and the outside garden a little slice of heaven to enjoy in peace with nature. The couple who own it are darling and have taken every measure to ensure their guests the perfect visit. Feeling grateful for this one time experience and if ever in Missouri again some day, I'd make sure they were on my list for a stop!

We were impressed with this hotel in the wonderful friendly staff, the clean rooms and the great breakfast. The Internet we pretty good also. There was a wonderful breakfast provided in the morning. The rooms were quiet and spacious. There was a historic charm about the hotel and it was close to the Truman Mansion and several other historic sites that we were interested in visiting.

Great boutique hotel across the street from the Truman Home. Minutes from the Truman Library and Courthouse Square. We found the hotel on TripAdvisor and were not disappointed. Nicely decorated common areas and comfortable rooms. Continental breakfast was the usual fare. Would stay here again if in the area.

My family chose this hotel for a family weekend. The staff was very nice and the rooms were well equipped, extremely clean, and comfortable. When we asked for directions to Kaufman field, the man behind the desk gave a very colorful description of the directions. His directions were spot on! I would stay here again.

This is a quaint hotel right across from the Truman house. It is beautiful inside and is very clean and spacious. We had a room with bunk beds for the kids. The owners are friendly and old-school. We have stayed in a lot of hotels over the years and I have to say this is one of our favorites. The only thing I would say is that it still uses keys, not card entry. It is a bit of a pain to have to carry them around.

I was unsure about booking this hotel, but I was pleased. It's an old building (my teenager was openly doubting my choice when we pulled up), but it's very clean inside. The room was spacious and clean, and the staff was friendly. If you are attending a Royals or Chiefs game, this is a great place to stay. It's close, and after the game you will be going against traffic.

We stay at this hotel whenever we visit Independence. The owners are warm and friendly, and the atmosphere is perfect. The decor is lovely, and accommodations are perfect for what we want. Pros: Very quaint hotel. Nice and quiet. Beautiful garden. We had the family suite with bunk beds, good size room. Loved how hotel was decorated and furnished. Cons: breakfast was almost obsolete, we went elsewhere. We needed an iron and I was told I had go to the lower level and get a iron and ironing board. Ummmm, I was on 3rd floor and had to climb steps with a full size ironing board. Wasn't happy. Make sure you don't soil any bedding or towels. They will charge you to replace them... Read more

We spent several days here. I can honestly say, we have never stayed at a cleaner hotel. Baseboards, behind the toilet, corners, are often neglected at hotels, but not here. It was spotless, and I appreciate that. I loved having a Keurig and basket full of coffee's, and tea's I liked it so much, I'm going to buy one. We stayed here on our way back to St. Louis from Colorado. The hotel is a converted office building, so still looks like that on the outside, and the ceilings in our room reflected that. Located across the street from the Truman home, staying at Higher Ground made it so easy to stroll and explore Independence's historic district.
