I have been a frequent guest of this establishment. I always feel welcome by the staff on arrival. All of the rooms have their own particular charm, too, which is an added attraction. The location is another sound reason for choosing the Essex. Most of what a visitor would value is right around the corner.

Beyond its outstanding location, tucked away on a quiet side street, this charming inn is clean, well appointed, and the staff was very friendly. Its a beautiful old captains house that's been converted, so the bathroom in my main house upstairs double room was on the smaller size, but perfectly comfortable from linens to beds to pillows. There was a continental style breakfast available in the AM, and I did grab a cup of coffee on my way out, but didn't opt for anything else so cant comment bey... Read more

This inn couldn't be better situated if you're visiting the lovely town of Newburyport. It's on a quiet street right off the main street, centrally located. It was not expensive, so we got what we paid for. It was completely adequate, nothing fancy. The breakfast was very basic; we supplemented from a nearby bakery. My one complaint is that the quality of the toilet paper and tissues was terrible. I know it's not a big thing, but in winter, I'm blowing my nose constantly, and their tissues were ... Read more

Service was great and they were very welcoming. Location great - walking to everything in the city including the beautiful shoreline. Hotel was in clean condition and well kept. It is charming and warm. Breakfast is an extended continental with nice additions such as meat, cheese and hard boiled eggs - and more. We had a few rooms due to a family gathering and found their space easy to hang out in with nice amenities. The only thing to mention is that the showers are very small but they ar... Read more

I have been a faithful guest here for nearly 10 years !! Absolutely love this place. The rooms are cozy, clean and the staff is friendly and attentive. My favorite rooms/suites are the ones with the gas fireplaces. There are also nice public spaces with lounge areas if you only book a room. The breakfast is excellent and they have a very cute dining room to sit and have your coffee. The best part of all is that this is located in the "heart" of downtown Newburyport so you can walk to all ... Read more

We had a wonderful stay at the Essex Street Inn for a weekend in late October. We stayed in the Bridal Suite, which included a wood burning fireplace, full kitchen, living room, and large jacuzzi tub. Check-in was easy and parking was plentiful behind the buildings so we did not need to worry about street parking. There are bars, coffee shops, and restaurants all along High Street, so the location was great. The continental breakfast had bagels, eggs, yogurt, juice, coffee, tea, etc, and gave us... Read more

We came up on Saturday and stayed through Monday. My daughter and I were here for the half marathon. Our room was great #309. Highly recommend it. Roomy and comfortable. Gas fireplace and full bath. Staff is always friendly and helpful. This is the only place we stay when we are in Newburyport

First of all I am a senior woman; after I was rudely thrown out of the Garrison Inn (for writing a bad review), I stayed at the Essex Street Inn for one night; and had a positive experience. The room was clean and everything was in order. I was only there for about 12 hours, but in that short time everything was satisfactory. The hotel is well situated, within walking distance to stores and restaurants; the people working there were friendly and helpful; I noticed there was yogurt and juice i... Read more

We were attending my son's wedding outside Boston. We stayed at the Essex St Inn in Newburyport and it was great. All of my family were staying there so there were multiple reservations with the last name. Every time we called with questions the staff were wonderful. The Inn is located right off the main street of the town and within walking distance to almost everything, all types of restaurants and quaint little shops. The continental breakfast was more than adequate to start the day. The... Read more
