My husband and I stayed at the Hampton Inn and Suites, Peru over the October 28-30 weekend. We had come to the area to visit Matthiessen State park for my birthday. This hotel was beyond welcoming from the second that we arrived. This hotel was at capacity the entire weekend (Due to a large wedding party that was staying) so we were greeted with about 12 guests in front of us at check-in. Realizing the situation, We calmly waited and watched how the young lady behind the counter kept her wits and professionalism as she effectively checked in all of the guests (Most were separate transactions) in under 10 minutes. Once we reached the counter, This young woman immediately apologized for our wait, and handed us our keys within 90 seconds. Since we had already checked in online, We knew that we were staying just around the corner from reception, on the first floor.
Our room was a standard 2 Queen room and it was spotless. We knew with the State Parks only minutes away and the World Series Game on television, we wouldn't be spending much time in the room anyways, so we didn't want the upcharge of a king room or suite. This room was perfectly acceptable to store our belongings and get a few hours nap each night. All appliances were perfect and in working order. The refrigerator was actually cold, which was a huge plus for us. The bathroom was fully stocked and nice, soft, fluffy towels were plentiful! Both of the beds were a little soft and bouncy from what we are used to, but we never had trouble falling asleep or sleeping like babies!
Since we had arrived in Peru a little early for check-in, we took time to explore the immediate surrounding area around the hotel. There is a Target store less than a five minute walk from the hotel (Not a superstore, but it does carry dry and frozen foods along with alcohol), a full indoor mall that was surprisingly well occupied with anchor stores of Bergner's (Carson's), JCPenney, Sears and Marshall's. Eating establishments were plentiful! Within walking distance of the hotel you have 2 different mexican restaurants, Jalapenos and Mi Margarita, Red Lobster, Steak n Shake, Buffalo Wild Wings and Applebees. Considering that this hotel is located just off of the main interstate, any and every dining or retail establishment is only a 5-10 minute drive away.
We explored, but did not use the swimming pool and hot tub. Both looked appealing and clean, but time was an issue and we never had the chance to partake. The fitness room was bigger than most that I have seen, and I loved the view of the pool from the room. All of the fitness equipment was functional and clean, and towels were fully stocked.
On our first night we decided to take up residency in the hotel lobby to watch the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. We asked at the front desk if it was okay that we sit down here and watch the game and we were met with a resounding, YES! Carey, the hotel manager, was on duty and she frequently checked on us during the night to see if we needed anything. As the night progressed, we got to learn more about this exceptional lady, her struggles and triumphs, and hear stories that were so personal, you couldn't help but to be touched by them. At 12:01 Saturday morning, Carey brought a bottle of wine and 2 glasses to our table in the lobby and wished me a happy birthday. That personal touch was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. This was a birthday where my own family hadn't even bothered to call me and here is a hotel manager going out of her way! I appreciated the gesture more than Carey will ever know.
The second night of our stay, After experiencing the state park all day, We decided to watch the next game of the World Series in the hotel lobby again. This is when we got to meet Abe, the sweetest maintenance man, and coincidentally the other half to the awesome manager, Carey. The Dynamic Duo! We felt at home with these two people, like they were family. They treated us far beyond any expectations, and I could not have asked for more personalized service. This became evident later in the night, as the wedding party started arriving back at the hotel inebriated. Abe made sure that he was checking the parking lot frequently, watching and alerting us before we stepped out of the doors to smoke, and keeping an eye on his precious wife as she was faced with the obnoxious, belligerent, non-staying guests who were just waiting on taxis home. I felt safe, secure and never had a question about my safety. I know that this manager, Carey, has worked at other Hampton Inn's in the area, but I will drive out of my way to only stay at hers. She runs a tight ship and her and her husband are a beautiful testament to what life is all about. Hilton no longer has the "Catch Me Cards", so I have no other way of recognizing these 2 wonderful people other than this.
I will not hesitate to stay at this hotel again. In fact, I can not wait to go back. I have recommended this hotel to everyone that I know and I have passed around Carey's business card more times than I can count. Having been in management myself, I know a great person and manager when I see them. Carey and Abe are honestly two of the best people on the face of this earth. Thank you both for everything! We will be back to see you soon!
As a side note, We met a retired police officer and veteran who is running a car/taxi service that comes to this hotel. $7 flat rate anywhere in town and only slightly more out of town. If you are staying here and need car service call Bill at City Taxi (815) 227-8294.
