The location, my room, bathroom, amenities and breakfast are all superb. The hotel is located atop a mall and I liked it. It was very convenient and helpful being so central to the best shopping and restaurants. This hotel was formally The Conrad and now Starwood inherited this gem. A new Conrad is being built several blocks away, but I doubt that there will as many suites nor an affordable rate. I certainly loved receiving a suite upgrade on my last 4 visits. I find that extremely rare in this... Read more

I was recently at the Gwen hotel in Chicago and have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. The hotel is ideally situated on North Rush street and has access via a Mall to the Magnificent Mile! The hotel is beautifully decorated, has generous sized rooms and friendly staff. The outdoor bar area is a laid back chilled area but somewhat disappointed that my colleagues where charged a service charge for their small group dining and drinking outside, although I'm sure it is a standard practice as ... Absolutely loved my stay at The Gwen. All the staff were very professional and friendly. The room was very spacious and felt very luxurious with complementary robe and slippers. The bed was really comfy the best hotel bed I've ever slept in! Breakfast was first class and all the staff were lovely. The roof terrace is great for enjoying a drink or two. We stayed at The Gwen Last Saturday 5/21/16. The main Lobby, Bar, Outdoor Patio had all been Redone. It was laid out more efficiently . Service was a little slow on the Patio with only 2 servers working inside and outside, Food and Drinks were very good. The rooms were still the Conrad furnishings-Not a bad thing- The beds are great. We had a wine pairing dinner close that night so it all worked out. Still my biggest complaint City Of Chicago Parking Rates overnight : $$$$ 70.00 per night. They... Read more

I have stayed at the Gwen before and at the Conrad, the hotel it was just over a year ago. The property is perfectly placed on North Rush, just steps from the Miracle mile. My check in was OK, there was one person and a line when I arrived. Not huge, but not expected at a Luxury Collection property. I checked in and was only asked if I wanted to "Go Green" which means they do not make up your room. I said, no, I want daily service. What I did not know, and no one asked me at check-in was y... This hotel has the makings to be great. I stayed there in May and the restaurant was being renovated, the staff wasn't fully trained as the waitress wasn't sure of wines or cocktails. My room was a nice size and the staff was very pleasant. They just have a few minors kinks to work through and they will be a nice hotel.

When The Gwen took over the property‚??formerly The Conrad‚??they made some improvements to the lobby and the restaurant & bar, but left the rooms pretty much the same as they were under the previous owner. The fifth floor lobby & registration has a new, ultra-hip look, with a popular (and prevalent) black, white and gray palette. If the 5pm action on a Saturday in June is any indication, the lobby bar is a popular spot for pre-dinner imbibing. We stayed three nights at the Gwen and found the h... Read more

We stayed at the The Gwen last night and were disappointed about A LOT. We were impressed here and there, no doubt. The location on Rush Street is fabulous as is the 5th Floor lobby, bar, and outdoor seating area. When we requested a room on a high floor, meh Craig at the front desk did put us on the top 17th floor. However, when we called the front desk (Craig) to ask about a room w/ a balcony, Craig replied "we're committed on room types tonight." We never saw anyone on the balcony on the 16th... Read more

Am writing this in the midst of a rather disappointing stay with the Gwen. First off, I've stayed in many Starwood Luxury Collection properties and this is by far the worst one (though also the cheapest, so maybe you get what you pay for), more like a tired Westin or a Sheraton. The lobby is beautiful, staff very friendly, breakfast great and patio bar (not a rooftop as the hotel website says, but the 5th floor lobby patio) is nice too. The negatives are the (1) quality of the rooms primarily ... Read more

Great weekend stay at the Gwen over Independence Day weekend. We found our stay at The Gwen to be pleasant, relaxing and stress free. Checking in was a breeze ....our room was more than adequate not large but certainly standard for downtown Chicago and was spotlessly clean. The Gwen is a beautiful hotel on Rush Street, just a block from the magnificent mile. Eataly, great shopping (Oak St., Rush St., Michigan Ave), and good restaurants are walking distance. It was easy to walk to most places, and it was a fast and cheap Uber or Taxi to the theater district ($6-10). The beds were comfortable, and the rooms were large. The terrace bar was a perfect way to cap an evening out. I will stay here again.

A very stylish hotel in a great location on Michigan Avenue. The room was large and well fitted out with a larger than average bathroom. All very clean and well maintained. I chose the Gwen over the 'W' bc if it being part of the SPG luxury collection. My wife and I were very disappointed in the accommodations given the cost per night of the room. The room was clean, but dated and sterile. I stayed two nights at the Gwen on a business trip. From the movement I walked in and was greeted the service was excellent. The facility is very clean and well run. Our stay at the Gwen was quite exceptionally awful. We arrived half an hour after the check-in time which is at 3:00 expecting to check-in to our rooms. They were not ready. We had a great time at the Gwen. The location was perfect, with access to everything downtown Chicago has to offer. The restaurant and bar were great and we loved having afternoon drinks on the patio. The halls and rooms are looking a little tired but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the hotel at all.

This is a very nice "upscale" hotel although the lobby has an odd location and while it has a sign on Michigan avenue its hard to reach. You have to walk through a shopping mall and then find an obscure elevator. Otherwise this is exactly what you would expect from a four-star (Luxury collection or similar chain such Park Hyatt or Farimont, etc.) hotel: Nothing was bad and everything was better than average. I found the lobby trying too hard to be hip and wish they just stuck to being luxury... Read more

The rooms are not the most updated, but this was easy to overlook since everything else was so fabulous!

Customer service was virtually nonexistent. Well before arriving, I wanted to ask about switching my reservation dates from two nights in September to four nights in October, and tried reaching in-house reservations for weeks and got only voicemail, which was never returned. Check-in was fine, and I think the attendant thanked me for being an SPG Preferred member, although this was the last leg of a multi-city trip so I was a bit bleary-eyed by then. This was a very last minute booking, I was suppose to drive home this night. I had a quite frustrating day and decided to hotwire a room and spend the night in Chicago. I would stay at this hotel again though at twice the price I paid. As a general rule I am not a hotel aficionado. Checked in yesterday. Up all night from the food at the restaurant and then promptly woken up by mild chatter from the room next door. Apparently the walls are paper thin. Every time a guest closes their door near our room it moves our door enough to sound like someone opened it and closed it. Great fun in the middle of the night. Another issue is the shower. Don't stay at this hotel if you expect basic things like door locks the work. Another approach would be to ask for 10 copies of your room key at check in. Half of them won't work right away.
