Blast from the past hotel! Well worth the day trip but not sure I'd stay longer. Needs more modernization ... Brighter interior colors to match the brilliance of its history. Beach was 5 star. Best beach u will EVER SEE ! I'm sure about that! Just spectacular. Go for the beach, stay for drinks and it's well worth the excursion.

Some would consider us crazy to give any place three tries. The Copper Bar at Mauna Kea was such a place. The first two visits were a disaster of extremely poor service. Usually I don't like to name names but Curry was one of the worst we experienced. He only showed up to give us the bill. If it wasn't for Rose and Sarah (a trainee) we would never have gotten a meal or drinks. They weren't even responsible for the section we sat in. We are not talking about minor bits of time here. It took 45 mi... Read more

Classic, enduring winner. Rockefeller had it right! The beach here is simply one of the most beautiful, picturesque and calm for swimming in the world. Fabulous place for kids. Very safe and protected, but they can snorkel right off the beach. The food was delicious in all the restaurants. Golf was beautiful! There are a couple holes that will take your breath away. Though the property is older, the rooms are updated and service is quite good. You could easily stay on the property for a... Read more

Hotel is in Kona. Very nice, beach (white sand, no surf, great for kids, paddleboarding). Ate at the beach restaurant & in the bar area. Both were good food, pricey, but within expectations of a resort. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Property is quite large - I'm not a golfer, but it it had a nice course. We loved the bathroom - very spa-like. Rainshower, separate soaker tub, private veranda off bath. We plan to return again. Only reason this is not a 5 star hotel is due to housekeeping be... My husband and I celebrated our honeymoon 1 year ago at the Mauna Kea and we decided to go back this year for our anniversary. Sometimes a place doesn't live up to your expectations the second time but this was not the case. The Mauna Kea is something special. It has an old Hawaii feel with it's gorgeous mid-century modern architecture. It is located on the most beautiful beach on the island which adds to its appeal. Upon arrival we were welcomed back by many of the staff. Our room was upgraded ... Read more

We stayed at this hotel last week for a few days before heading to our Marriott vacation club on Oahu. I used Marriott points for the stay--we were welcomed with leis and cold juice upon arrival. Francis was very attentive upon check in. Both of our rooms were adjacent to each other and we were upgraded to an ocean front. I would probably book ocean front next time so as not to rely on the upgrade. The view is incredible. We ate at the breakfast buffet at Manta each morning. It's a little spendy... Read more

I'm a Hawaii resident who stayed at the hotel to attend the Big Island Jazz and Blues Festival. Hadn't been there in a long time. The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was built by Rock Resorts in 1973 and was the first Kohala Coast resort on the Big Island. it still holds it's charm and beauty from when it originally opened. It's a small hotel that has a simple elegance that is extremely relaxing. The service is superior and very friendly. There were many repeat guests staying at the property that were wel... Read more

Have visited or stayed at this hotel a number of times, and normally a good experience. However had dinner with Friends at Copper restaurant last Wednesday ,and the meal was a total disaster!!Our table was 10 people.Nobody enjoyed the food. Scallops served as thin slices ,almost inedible. Those who had ribs were served 2 small ribs on mash.Compared with large servings at pool cafe previous night.Ordered a bottle of Chardonnay ?it took 30 minutes to arrive at table, and not chilled! We all complained ... Beautiful location. Loved the open floor plan. Very retro feel, but we enjoyed that. We also stayed at the Ritz Carlton in Maui - which has a modern feel. We preferred the Mauna Kea. We had some airline delays, so we were late arriving. Turns out, they gave our golf view room to someone else. It took a while, but we were upgraded to a deluxe beach front room. It was worth the flight delays and room hassles. The view was absolutely spectacular and we enjoyed sitting on the balconies. The only ... Read more

This is one of the most beautiful places we have stayed. The beach and water are beautiful! The place is clean with many amenities. Staff was very good. Rooms are spacious. My only concern was that it seemed many staying at the resort would come out early to save their lounge chairs / umbrella at the beach or pool them come back later to use them. This made it difficult for family of 5 to find shady seats together in the middle of the day. That said, we were so busy, we weren't there that much.

We spent a week here as part of our honeymoon and overall had a great time. The hotel location and its beach are just great. The bedrooms are a little dated for our taste but I guess that's just a matter of opinion. We had a beautiful ocean view room which made up for the decor inside. Breakfast in the hotel was plentiful but by the end of the week we were a little "bored" with it and just bought a light snack from the shop. As mentioned above the beach is excellent, we did go out and expl... Read more

You don't need to go anywhere else. This was absolutely the nicest beach we ever have been too, and the hotel is wonderful as well. We got an ocean view room and we couldn't have asked for a nicer view. The sand on the beach was soft and the water was just the right temperature and with the right amount of swells and waves. The sand in the water was soft also, not rocky like lots of other beaches in Hawaii. Went snorkeling right at the hotel and saw many different fish and a big eel. Other... Read more

Checking into the hotel was a pleasure, they provide cool towels and juice and flower leis. Our room was a Golf View Deluxe and it was wonderful. Tastefully appointed, spacious, comfortable with a closet room that begs a longer stay. We enjoyed the beach, pool, and walking around the hotel. I??d say the highlight was watching the Manta Rays at night swim up to a lava outcrop viewing point. We found consistently the staff took pride in their work and contributed to making the hotel a welcoming ... Read more

Only on day 2 of 8 but the place is outstanding. Staff is so courteous and attentive. The beach is unreal. The hotel itself is designed so different than any place I have stayed. Not sure of its a Hawaiian thing as this my first trip but so much of the hotel is outdoors. Even the checkin and concierge area are outdoors. Will update as the stay progresses.

We love and go to the Kauai Marriott Resort every fall, but since June was our 40th anniversary, we wanted to go some place very special where we hadn't been before. What a wonderful choice was the Mauna Kea Hotel. We had a ground floor beachfront room which was beautiful and so convenient to the beach. What a beautiful resort! The view is spectacular and the water is crystal clear. We stayed a week and didn't want to come home! We snorkeled right there at the hotel, watched giant manta rays at night, and sat under an umbrella and relaxed. We golfed at their course which has beautiful water views. The room was large, comfy bed, and a big balcony. Unfortunately, when we booked the room, all the beach views were gone. Our second annual trip to the Mauna Kea. We love traveling the world and trying new places, but I will always select the Mauna Kea for our annual week vacation to Hawaii. I hope they can continue to keep the non-commercial and relaxing feel that is nearly impossible to find at most other hotels in the Hawaiian Islands. It's a timeless place. The beach is world-class, we love the tennis courts and the extra amenities here and there. We have stayed at some spectacular service-oriented properties ... Read more

A stunning step back to mid-century modern. So well kept. It is NOT the Hilton at Waikoloa. It's jet-setter trendy, 60's vibe with service on par with the Ritz. And perched right on the cliff next to the stunning bay makes it a picture postcard experience. You know when you walk the grounds and hear Frank Sinatra and other laid back lounge music, that you've time traveled back to a better time.

My husband and I, our sons and their fiancees spent four days at this resort in March 2016. We were all impressed with the huge bedrooms, luxurious bathrooms and beautiful grounds. We spent little time on the beach - we toured the island during our stay - but we did find a lovely secluded beachside table for an al fresco dinner. The staff was lovely, accommodating us for a late check out for our evening flight. We are all still talking about our great experience.

Amazing hotel on an even more amazing beach. This is an older hotel that has been well keep and updated. It has a great vibe. It would not be for the party types. The hotel is very family friendly, but my wife and I with no kids did not fill like we were at a playground. I would suggest if you can afford it, the ocean view rooms would be fantastic.
