We visited the Kona Reef Resort in April 2016. We are a 60+ couple and well traveled. We stayed at Kona Reef for 9 days and were in unit D-4 (ground floor). This is a laid back, unassuming facility. The facility is a mix of individual owned units rented via VRBO, timeshare units via Raintree, and a third mix which I did not take the time to understand - we were in one of the 28 Raintree units. Synopsis: The resort is clean, well kept. Quiet. Our unit was ground floor, oceanfront which was appro... Read more

The room was nice but there were three things that were bad. One, the reception clerk was rude. Two, there was an extra $50 cleaning charge added at check in. Three, there was construction in the hallway and we were forced to check out two hours early which was very inconvenient.

This condo was very lovely, exactly as advertised. We enjoyed the sound of the ocean every day, and the closeness to town allowed us to pop in daily without having to start the car. We had a couple of little housekeeping items that came up in the first couple of days, but one email to Sandy, and everything was made right immediately! We would definitely stay in this complex and unit again. Mahalo for a wonderful 2 weeks.

Suggest installing digital door locks with card coded keys. Our door did not lock securely. Returning to our unit one night, we were shocked to discover the lock popped open by simply turning the door knob 3 times, without using the key. This happened twice during our stay. We asked for the deadbolt key but was told guests do not get them. The manager came over, checked it, then said it worked fine. It worked that evening, but the same thing happened the next evening. The next morning, the ... Read more

greetings, coming back from a one week stay in lovely oceanfront A17 condo. This is a true oceanfront 2nd floor condo with awesome views (litterally 20 yards from the ocean) from a huge lanai. The condo itself is in perfect shape, there are two bedrooms (one large master bedroom with king size bed) and one smaller bedroom with queen size bed. The beds were comfortable with good quality mattress and bed sheets. The condo has two separate bathrooms, that are small but very nice and fully funct... Read more

Just back from a fantastic 10 day stay on the Big Island where the 2nd half was spent in D25. Thankfully as D25 was far better than the other property we stayed at for the first half. Booking with Darline was the best and really enhanced the overall experience. She has thought of EVERYTHING with regards to outfitting this place. Just the assortment of beach bags alone will impress you! The kitchen is exceptionally well outfitted with a Moccamaster coffee maker and more types of cooking uten... Read more

We stayed this past week for 2 days. Unit /building was very old. We wanted Lenin blankets after hours- no response. Stinky old carpet. Cockroaches! Worn out utensils. Not much beach. Disappointed- felt cheated for the amount of money we paid. Find something better near the Volcano or other points of interest or just go to Maui.

My family stayed in the Kona Reef unit D18 condo for 11 days in May 2016. The unit was great! It was clean and ready to go when we got there. The corner unit was right by the ocean. I was glad it wasn't on the ground level because people would walk in front of the Lani. I'm also glad we had the window AC unit to cool the unit. All the beds were comfortable. My wife and I stayed in one bedroom while my 3 kids stayed in the second. The bigger bed in the second bedroom allowed 2 kids to sleep in ... Read more

we arrived at the property which is ocean front with great views. NO ONE at the office - which is open about 4 hours/day - if you are lucky! Once you find the office, no signs, you pick up a phone -they tell you a unit number and a code. We went to the unit - spent 20 minutes trying to enter the code and get the key. NO LUCK! I went back to the phone. i was on hold 10 min waiting for them to reach the property manager or security. Finally they asked for my number as they couldn't find anyone. A... Read more

Easy walk into town for food and people watching. Out the door and right next door to a little beach. Out the door and 10 steps to the shore. Close your eyes and hear the crashing waves. Each condo we have stayed in is a bit different from the others. We stayed in D31 this time and it was nice. But we are hardly there because there is so much to do.

The Kona Reef is only a 5 minute walk from central Kona. During busy times of the year this makes a real difference. Pretty much all of the units have an ocean view. The best units are located in buildings A and D. These are only 50' from the ocean. I have stayed in other units, but we prefer the direct ocean front units. The one bedrooms are about 600 sq/ft.

I would have given this 3 stars but when I feel swindled I have to knock it down a peg. If your going to charge $50 a night for cleaning fee, then at least post that prior to booking. As for the room, it was ok. B21, it was a little run down, but it was somewhere to sleep. You could see ocean, if from an angle, but my room was right next to very busy street. From what I have read there are other rooms that are better, so know what your getting yourself into before booking

We loved our trip to Kona and Kona reef resort was awesome!! Condos are individually owned so I believe some condos are better than others but our condo was amazing. It was so clean and we had a beachfront view! The resort pool was clean and the view of the ocean while you are in the pool or hot tub was superb! Also, the grilling area was great! We look forward to returning soon!!

The Kona Reef is a great location--easy walk to shops and restaurants. You can walk along the street, but I recommend the walk that goes along the access to the hotels (just walk along the grass area until you get to the "beach access" exit). I believe we stayed in unit D2--I totally recommend the D building because of the great view right on the ocean. Furthermore, there is a big convenience advantage to be on the ground level. Breakfast on the lanai and just go over the lava rock wall to y... Read more

A Good Location With Lots of Space The photos and description of this condo (on were quite accurate. The view was truly magnificent. We stayed during the hot days of early August, so the air conditioner was essential. It cooled the main living area quite well, but was struggling to get any cool air into the master bedroom. We kept two fans running, which helped, but it was still quite warm. Wifi connectivity was spotty and slow. The kitchen and dining are were well stocked with whatev... Read more

I would give this a big nothing if I could. We stayed here for three nights and I wish I could forget them. It was our honeymoon so I paid a bit extra to have an ocean front room. I now wish we had stayed at the Sheraton which was the same price. I shiver just thinking about our time here. The apartments are so old and in need of renovation that they feel dirty. Really, really dirty. Our balcony door would not open properly as the tracks were so old, the mirrors and tiles in the bathroom wer... Read more

Nothing like what you see on their pictures. Worst couch. You cannot sleep 4 adults. Very big back pain. 14 nights make it the worst experience in Kona. No security box. No front desk, no talking, no music

We arrived at 2pm - brusque woman said "Check in is at 3pm," We came back at 3:30pm and we still waited almost an hour before we could check in. The housekeeper was kind and apologetic, however; when we did get into the room it clearly was not cleaned well, with sticky toddler handprints everywhere. The room was on 2nd floor - either 212 or 213-- really dark entrance..... Now - once in the room you forgot everything else because the ocean waves came right up to the grass lawn just yards from t... Read more

I stayed in A24. It is right at the water, very close, with a spectacular view. The AC is a wall unit in the living room, so the bedroom gets kinda warm. There is a floor stand fan to help with that. The Tv in the bedroom is in the closet (didn't find it till day two LOL). I am giving it only average because although the view is amazing and it is quiet there at night, the bed and the pillows were quite uncomfortable. When people walked by the door it sounded like they were right inside. T... Read more

We were disappointed with castle resorts and kona reef. They overbooked and we were moved to another location further than we wanted to be. At first the second place had no room for is. We spent a few hours trying to find accommodations in Kona and during race week is nearly impossible. Unnecessary stress especially when preparing for the ironman race. The Bali Kai finally found us a room. The people were nice but its was a noisy area.

This place is awesome! It is right on the water so you can hear the ocean while you fall asleep. The rooms are always clean and the air conditioning is a great welcome to come home to. The pool is fun and the hot tub is great. There are 4 outside gas grills for cooking and tables to eat at in the garden area. We love the location as it is within walking distance to town. We stay here every time we visit. The views are amazing from any room facing the pool or the ocean. Highly recommend.

First husband and I made our reservations 1 year in advance and since then we have had nothing but problems with this company (the hotel company NOT the VRBO/Timeshare company). First, they refused to work with our travel advisor indicating that they did not have to do this because they knew they would book up without problems for Ironman week. Second, they could not find our reservation when we wanted to make a change to it. We finally got that fixed and then wanted to change our arriv... Read more
