Within the past two years, Castle has given the 1970s hotel property a total makeover. Rooms and public areas have been totally redone. The restaurant has top notch chefs. The outstanding view of Hilo Bay and Mokuola (Coconut Island) remains fantastic. Within easy walking distance of a large Japanese-style garden with history dating back nearly 100 years, the hotel provides easy access to gentle exercise and more strenuous pursuits. We spent 4 nights here in April 16 and found the location good. The rooms had plenty of room and were clean and quiet. We had a harbour view which was far superior to what our children had on the other side of the hotel. We had a nice meal at the restuarant one night, but we did not find breakfast very appealing. We received plenty of good travel advice from the booking assistant in the foyer, and while there enjoyed the free wifi. Wifi in our room would have been preferred. The staff were gen... Read more

Ocean view room 704 very spacious and clean, recently renovated. Fabulous breakfast, plan on splitting the a la carte order! Room 702 had windows on two sides (corner room). Not a 5 star but we'd stay there anytime. Close to the action, next to beautiful Japanese park, good spot for birding the shore from your balcony.

Ohhhhh, not a nice place on my list. We arrived after a full day driving with a 2 year old and were excited to get into our room. Had booked an ocean view double but when we walked in we found it was very small with a very strong 'hospital' smell. The couches were faded and had crumbs on them and the roof was (I'm 90% certain) asbestos. We went for a drive and thought about it then decided to upgrade to a garden view double room for $50 extra a night. The room was a little better but the fridge ... Read more

Great place to stay, overlooking the bay. Easy walk to downtown Hilo and a number of places to eat ago the way. The hotel offers buffets, however we stayed a few days before and after Mother's Day so the buffets were booked out. They were very popular so if you want to attend make sure you book early. Tip- if the buffet is on forget about getting any serves from the bar/coffee shop, took simply ages to get a drink. The rooms are very large and beds super comfortable, ask for a room that overloo... The hotel is well located, close to the ocean and a lovely Japanese garden. There are shops and restaurants close by. We booked a standard room with a garden view and received a complementary upgrade to a deluxe room with an ocean view. The room was spacious and very clean. Housekeeping staff do a good job. Wifi was free in the lobby and worked very well. However, the charge for in room wifi was $10 per device for 24 hours. This is too much! To our dismay, after paying our $10, the wifi st... Read more

A good place to sleep and eat, an excellent base for trips to Volcanoes park and rain forest. Comfortable, clean with good service by hotel staff. Get a room with view of Hilo bay, not much more and well worth the money. Plenty of free parking . Need to provide free internet somehow. $9.99 per day is not competitive. Still, I would recommend it. I had 4G and LTE so no worries.

I had purchased this hotel on Hotwire. The check in woman was rather frosty with us and when I asked if she had an ocean front room available, she made a comment that I was already paying a low rate and that they did not have any ocean front rooms available I asked to pay for the upgrade and she told me that was not possible. . Instead I was given a very nice room, but it over looked a cement roof and parking lot. I later found out that they did have quite a few ocean front rooms. We had to park... Read more

The hotel is located on a quiet road and overlooks Hilo bay. The reception is open, no front doors, which initially felt odd. The hotel curves around the bay, so the corridors curve too, so you cannot see all the way to the end. Check in was very easy, I gave my name while looking for the booking and by the time I had found it, they already had my details up on the computer. Expedia gives this hotel a 3.7 I would give it a 3 This is probably your best choice Hotel in Hilo even with the below issues but none are "deal breakers" Cons: Make sure your room is on the 5th floor or higher; if not you will be looking at mostly trees off the balcony. Make sure you DO NOT have a room on the end of the Hotel because there is a window the length of that wall and you hear all the parking lot noise ! There isn't much choice for accommodation in Hilo and this hotel is a reasonable choice just don't expect too much. The rooms are a decent size and ours was recently updated (though don't expect anything too modern). There's loads of free parking and no other resort fees. Unfortunately the free Wifi is limited to the lobby, the rooms are very noisy both from the corridor and the antiquated air conditioning and the breakfast buffet (for an additional fee) is absolutely terrible!

The entire hotel is very old and outdated. Noticed mold on the balcony and near the A/C unit. There are pictures on trip advisor that made it seem like at least the common areas were modern/updated. This is not the case. The tv's did not work. You have to pay $10 per day per device to access the wifi, and even after paying for it, it kept getting "interrupted". You really don't have much choice if you are staying in Hilo. That said, the Castle Hilo is a nice enough hotel. It's quiet and well-maintained, and it's easily accessed. We opted to go downtown for dinner but the buffet appeared to be popular. Ryan the bartender was kind and made a great drink. Parking was tight but we always found a spot. We love Hilo and the fact that it is still somewhat untouched and retains that old Hawaii feel. The staff could provide pool towels etc., to make the pool experien... Read more

Clean, friendly staff; nothing fancy but convenient...AND I am grateful that they accommodate smokers; thank you very much. Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge on the ground floor; and a convenience store a few steps away.

My daughter and I really enjoyed our stay here. Staff were very friendly, hotel was very clean. Its a great location with everything close by in Hilo town and Hawai'i Volcano National Park. This is a must place while staying in Hilo.

Hotel isn't anything to write home about. Very basic in every sense, however, if you have a high level ocean view room, the view is phenomenal. From all the reviews, this seems to be the best option. Pay for the ocean view upgrade!

So we stayed in upscale places in Kauai and Oahu, we were told that this was the best hotel in Hilo. We got there and were surprised at how dated the hotel was, it was also a major step down from the better places we stayed on the other island. We got into the room, and set the thermostat to 65, the room temperature never dropped below 76 for 3 days straight. We also found toe nail clippings in the bed near the pillow. The hotel served its purpose as a base for our trip, however it felt dirt... Read more

Called front desk a week before, requesting a room close to the elevator/handicap accessible. Perfect. Bathroom/shower appeared new. Beds were firm and comfortable and definitely could NOT hear the coqui frogs unless we opened the lanai door in the evening. We even parked close to the lobby, mostly in one of just a few handicap accessible stalls. This is an older hotel, but well maintained. Seemed quite popular with tour groups. Parking lot seemed nearly full. Hawaiian music entertainment at n... Read more

Great view, central location. Front desk personnel helpful and friendly. Activities desk a bit disappointing if help needed in planning activities. No in-room microwave, have to rent at $10/day. Mini-fridge available.

This is the only word I feel honestly describes what could be a great hotel. We excitedly arrived here after spending a few nights in Waikiki. The reception staff were nonchalant. No smiles. No aloha. No real service but we were tired from our flight and didn't worry about it. We went to the room. What a lovely view!! But. Although the room seemed clean. It was really so-so. There's a king bed. Lamps. An uncomfortable chair (just one!) in the corner. No safe! No bottle opener. No coffee cups ... Read more

We stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel so that we could view the Kilauea lava flowing into the ocean. While not a fancy hotel by any means, the front desk staff are super friendly and accommodating. We arrived at 10am and were able to check in early to our ocean view rooms. Room interiors have been renovated recently and are very clean and similar in layout to a Hampton Inn or Best Western, but with modern Hawaiian decor. There was an empty refrigerator for guest use, bedding is double sheeted o... Read more

Hotel is nice. Right next to Coconut Island and Liliuokalani Park and Gardens. Rooms are spacious and comfortable. Queens Court restaurant serves great breakfast and dinner. There's a lounge that serves food and has live music too. The hotel is close to the airport and a reasonable distance from Volcano National Park.

When I was trying to find a hotel in Hilo, I got a little discouraged by all the poor reviews for the hotels here. I was pleasantly surprised by our room at the Hilo Hawaiian hotel. We have a wonderful ocean view room on the 7th floor. Clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay here again.

Great location, Great view. We really enjoyed Hilo, it's wetter than Kona but much more homey and full of locals instead of tourists. This is a great place to stay there. There's a buffet that seems worth a try, though we didn't.

Hotel is right on the water and near a beautiful Japanese Garden. The pool wasn't the best but it was near by the ocean where there is an old structure the local kids use to jump in. Hotel was a bit dated but was perfect for our needs. I would definitely stay here again.

My wife and I stayed for an overnight in Hilo. It definitely seems that the owner's are starting to reinvest in the hotel, as the rooms have been updated with modern furnishings. Location is good, but the place is a bit creepy (see feedback below). Overall, I would probably look elsewhere to book the next time I am in Hilo. There are two areas that still need to be improved: Safety and Security -- Multiple times when we went into the parking garage and or transited to the pool we encountered ... Read more

Nice lobby and nice, large rooms. Free internet but no safes in the rooms. Was nice having restaurants in the hotel and they had good food and large servings. Had lots of parking and is in a good location. Has a couple little shops close by.

First of all, there aren't many options for hotels in Hilo. In light of this, this hotel suited our needs: clean, spacious, and had parking. The property itself is nothing special and feels like it hasn't been renovated for a while.

We stayed two days in Hilo and chose this hotel for its location. It is 5 min from the Hilo airport, close to Hilo "downtown", 20 miles from the Volcanoes NP, and minutes away from a major shopping center. Rooms are clean and adequate. Breakfast buffet is ok, although I would like to see more local offerings. One thing to praise the hotel management for is the measure they took in preparation for Hurricane Madeline. They had the balcony furniture moved indoors, and issued a flashlight to ea... Read more

Booked this via Costco travel and it's the only hotel in Hilo offered by Costco Travel. It says 2.5 star so we were a little worried at first but the hotel turns out much much better than we expect. It's actually very nice. They gave s a complementary ocean view room to and it was beautiful, overlooking the coconut island. We were very pleased with our stay.

We're so glad we chose this hotel! It's very well run. The staff are all friendly and helpful. Our room was very lovely with a gorgeous view out over Hilo Bay and Coconut Island. Everyone has a private lanai and we enjoyed ours. Nice big bathroom. Banyon Drive where it is located is really pretty, too. Easy access to all things in town. We enjoyed Hilo a lot.

Stayed one night after arriving on the island. Room was clean, a bit dated. Pool looked like it was under construction. AC took a while to dehumidify the room but it was fine after 2 hours. Close to Hilo Bay Cafe. View from room was really nice.

Stayed in this hotel 2 times over a 4 week period and had a very relaxing time. It's the best Hotel in Hilo even though it's only a 3 star. A "real" hotel with concrete high-rise structure, elevator, parking, attractive lobby with comfortable furniture yet quaint. The rooms feel solid and well insulated- quiet! AC works great, perfect temperature. Clean and super comfortable beds and linens/towels. All the toiletries you need. Very nice view of the bay and lanai sitting area. I would stay again!

We needed a place to stay for the evening that was relatively inexpensive. After what seemed like an endless search, we settled on this hotel. The neighborhood is not optimal, but the hotel was clean and the staff was friendly. We had a beautiful view of the ocean and slept well. We were pleasantly surprised.

The bed was comfortable, even though the room was a bit dated. One thing is that you can hear all the noise in the hallway as people are walking and talking by your room. The breakfast in the restaurant is excellent with a choice of the buffet breakfast or a la carte menu. We ordered eggs most mornings, rather than having the full buffet breakfast.

This hotel is being upgraded, and is nearly done. It is really quite nice. My room was freshly painted, very clean, had a nice view of Hilo Bay and Coconut Island, and was pretty quiet for an older building. The people running the hotel are beyond nice, and I would stay again anytime. A good choice for visiting Hilo and the volcano.

Very out dated hotel. Needs a lot. Of work!!! Hallway smells! The only reason it gets a 3 is b/c it's only one of the only hotels in the city. The music in the bar was very loud. Seafood buffet attracted very interesting people. No other food items available durning that time.

I visit the Big Island at least once a year. The Hilo Hawaiian is still the best hotel to stay in Hilo. Some of the other hotels in the area have recently changed name brand, but are basically the same. The recent upgrades at the Hilo Hawaiian are simple and comfortable. The staff are welcoming and like most people on the Big Island of Hawaii, they truly share the spirit of Aloha with every local and visitor.
