RICHMOND HISTORY
The Richmond was founded in 1941 by Peres Seltzer, prior to the outbreak of World War II. As someone who traveled across the Atlantic many times on the French liner Normandie, he envisioned a small Art Deco hotel reminiscent of that great ocean liner. He could also see the need for beachfront hotels, and The Richmond was one of the first to be built directly on the ocean. It was also the first to be air-conditioned after the end of the war.

"Great stay at the Richmond Hotel. My husband and I went for a quick weekend and had a great time! The hotel is average, the drinks are expensive but the atmosphere is good. SoBe prices are on the expensive side so this hotel was reasonable. It was clean and a very short walk to the beach. You can rent beach chairs for $7.50 each on the beach per day. The staff made the stay good - very friendly and always happy!"

"The hotel has a great location and it was well landscaped with nice curb appeal. Far enough from the crazy action to be quiet and close enough to be steps away from the activity. The staff at the front desk was a bit disorganized when it came to where my luggage was supposed to be held before the 4pm check in. No one seemed to know what to do and I was quickly sent walking up and down the hall to ask all the staff what to do, when in fact the room to hold the luggage was just steps away. The room was smaller in size and the bathroom was a tight fit. The closet was rather large and had a safe to use for free. The room and hotel did not have any musty smells and that was a great surprise. The room was NOT remodeled or updated at all!!! The bed was old and squeeky and the drapes had holes in them. The T.V. was on a table that was too low to be seen from the bed, so we took the ironing board and all the magazines and put those on the table to give the T.V. the height needed to be seen. The walls are PAPER THIN and so is the door that separates the rooms, so be clear you will be able to hear EVERYTHING - that your neighbors on the other side of the wall are doing. AHM AHM - even conversations. I thought it was a bit rude to charge $9 per day wi-fi , so I went to Starbucks for free wi-fi. Fridge in the room was old, but it was better than nothing. No microwave or coffee machine. Also no outlets next to the bed, only 3 outlets in the room total and the T.V., fridge, and 2 lamps use those. Only 1 in the bathroom was next to the toilet. I don't think my room was vacuumed the entire 5 days I was there, the same dirt was on the floor day after day. On the last night I thought there was sand in the bed and it was old sheets that were very 'pilly'. Also, the elevator door has a history of sticking and the staff has affectionately called it 'lazy'. A huge plus, I left my money in plain sight and when I returned at the end of the day, it was all there, the housekeeping was trustworthy and that is great thing! Overall, the hotel was very nice, just desperately needs a good updating in the rooms. I would return to The Richmond because of the location and size of the hotel."

"The location is great- right near the beach, Lincoln Drive, Lummus park area.
Was really disappointed with the room. The fridge quick working after the 2nd day and one of the legs was missing. All the fabric on the chairs were stained bad. Saw a large cockroach scurrying under the bed- gross. The vent in the bathroom had'nt been cleaned in 30 years. Staff was great, pool was nice. Cost wise was reasonable compared with other South beach hotels- but I would pay more for a better room although wasn't there very much at all."

"We stayed for 4 nights and the room was clean and had a large closet. We did have problems with the air conditioning being too cold. The hotel is located on the beautiful beach and they have a really large hot tub the size of a small pool. We live in Florida and like to stay at this hotel because of the price, cleanliness, polite staff and location. We will be back."

"This is a great Hotel. The pool area is absolutely gorgeous. The beach is literally 70 yards from the hotel. Parking is valet only. If you blink you miss your turn into the Hotel, but that is my only complaint. South Beach is very pricey but a lot of fun. If you want night life and excitement, and mellow beaches with crystal blue water in the day time. Go here! The staff is really friendly. I'd go back."

"The best thing they have is the courtesy of the staff. Other than that, here is my negative list:
Bed was not clean (had hair between the sheets). I complained, they changed them.
Unable to control room temperature. Mechanism was broken.
NBC, Fox and NBC TV stations did not work.
Did not make the rooms till 5 pm.
requested a coffee table and was told that there was only one in the hotel and could not be moved.
Bell person did not even offer to take luggage to room. had to hall luggage over one flight of stairs and down the other end of the hallway to get to the elevator because the other elevator that bypasses the first flight of stairs was inoperable, despite my health challenges.
even after they changed my room, nothing changed."

"Me and my significant other stayed for four nights. The breakfast was yummy, but, pricey. About $40 total for the bill. You can go to Dolce Vita cafe about 2 blocks away and get breakfast for two at half the price. We did not get clean towels every day. Our bed was made twice. The staff is friendly. They greeted us when we arrived and each day as we discovered South Beach. The pool is warm and a good size. Its not too crowded. We did not have a view. Our window faced the next hotel. The room was small. There is one closet and no dresser drawer. The bathroom was not updated. The toilet flushes very loudly. You have to use your credit or debit card for internet access in the Business Center. You have direct access to the beach once you go past the pool. Our car was parked at a garage nearby for $35 per day. It you want a simple hotel and want to stay a night or two, its not bad. There are no bed bugs. Our neighbors were quiet. The neighborhood is safe. Maxine's restaurant is 24 hours across the street from the hotel. You have many options to eat, dance, hear live music at Mango's and tons of bars. Thank you."

"Richmond Hotel is an old building, thus there are some issues guests have to deal with when visiting. However, for people with a limited budget, this is a very good option.
Pros: The staff is extremely helpful and every single member I contacted with requests helped me with a smile in his face, and fast.
Cons: water in the shower/sink is extremely hot in some rooms; we had to ask for towels quite often, since cleaning ladies provided us only with small towels.
The cafeteria at the pool is pricey, but again the personnel is so nice, you don't feel they are trying to just get money out of your pocket, which is the case in many places in Miami Beach.
I definitely recommend this hotel."

"Stayed 5 nights at the Richmond, and overall a good stay in the hotel. Didn't stay in the room all day just to get ready and sleep. What I Loved about it is that the beach is right behind it with a walking way leading directly to it. The pool goes up to 8ft so that was good. Love the breakfast, delicious, but a little pricey, and that the hotel is in a great location. My husband and I walked everywhere, only used a taxi from and to airport. The hotel vibe is dead, didn't seem busy, but that was good for us, but i guess not good for those looking to party and drink at the hotel bar, b/c there is no hotel bar and restaurant only serves breakfast and lunch, not dinner. The only thing i didn't like was, the room was kind of small, but it was clean, the walls are thin so you can hear people in other rooms, even there tv if you don't have yours on, the water in the shower would change to really hot when people in the other room flushed the toilet (you can hear toilet flush) and there is really no where to unpack your stuff, there is not chest w/drawers and only 5 hangers, there is shelving in the closet but not a lot. I like to unpack b/c it makes it easier to get ready instead of digging through your suitcase. and another thing i didn't really like is, that when room service would come, they didn't replace the correct amount of towels and most of the time didn't replace toilet paper, so when we would call to get 2 rolls of TP, they would only bring 1 so it made it a little annoying to keep calling for TP, and the towels. But overall good stay. I LOVE Miami Beach and loved laying on the beach all day and walking Ocean Drive at night. The hotel itself is nice but the room we stayed in was small, noisey, and room service was ok and staff was friendly."

"I have been to Miami several times and do my research before staying somewhere, in doing so i found that according to some reviews on Trip adviser the Richmond 'had the least negative things said about it' compared to others. I picked it because of the location, being on 17th and Collins it is close enough to everything without being in the middle of the craziness of the strip. The staff was friendly and efficient, the rooms were not huge but clean and well kept. And they do go for the retro look in the bathrooms such as pink or blue tile, but they were clean and in good condition, so no complaints there. It was exactly what i was looking for, close, clean, affordable, nice rooms, good staff, pool area which backs onto the beach. If you are looking for any of those things this is a great place for you. Of course there will always be someone who has something negative to say about everything. But I would definitely recommend the Richmond!"

"I have no complaints. The hotel is clean, great location, staff was very helpful and friendly. Restaurant has good food for breakfast and lunch and reasonably priced compared to other restaurants in the area. Pool area is very nice and has easy access to the beach. Walls are thin, but we had a quiet group staying this week so no real problems. We arrived at 9:30 in the morning and were very lucky to have access to our room at that time. I would definately stay here again should I visit South Beach in the future."

"When we entered the hotel lobby we where not greeted appropriately, we had to speak to the staff before they acknowledged us. I can say that I was pleased that they allowed us an early check in, due to our early arrival. The house keeping staff was great at keeping our room clean & tidey. The staff was nice however still we had to speak first before we got a hello or good morning. We where not able to get the Miami Heat game on the nice flat screen tv in the room, was informed tha the hotel doen not have satilite tv. The drinks at the bar in the hotel where to expensive $14 for one, I dont think so, no discount offered and no happy hour!"

"We really enjoyed our stay. What a nice authentic Art Deco property. It has a beautiful & classy lobby and front desk area with highly polished terrazzo floor making a great initial impression when you walk in from the palm shaded front drive. Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and accommodating. Our room was very clean with nice bed linens and proper styling of furniture, lamps and even clock radio. The bathroom was great with original thick green wall tiles........once again very clean and original. The highlight I believe is the pool area.....extremely well maintained, clean, private with a choice of sunny or shaded lounge chairs with comfortable padding. From the pool area you follow a walkway that leads back past a fountain and thru a small manicured grassy area to the rear gate leading to the beach and boardwalk. During the three days that we were guests there were always staff members quietly cleaning the public areas....little dining room, pool area, wiping down the glass lobby doors and at one point even power washing the pato area around the pool. Things are very well maintained. And finally my response to a couple of mildly negative reviews. Regarding parking.....yes it is expensive @ $35 a day for valet, but It's the price that everyone pays to be in South Beach. That is the situation wherever you stay. There is the alternative of parking your own car at a garage a couple of blocks away. You might save $10 a day......but you won't have in & out parking like you do with hotel valet. When parking on your own you'll pay $ every time you leave the garage. With hotel it's $35 for the day no matter how often you come and go. And lastly....I have to laugh when I see someone say that the hotel stying is old or dated. People.......you are staying in the Art Deco district in an authenticly styled hotel from that period. That's the whole point!! You are experiencing the accommodations of an earlier era. Enjoy it! I highly recommend this hotel!"

"The Richmond hotel is a fine place to stay if you can get a great deal on a room. My room was very clean but contained only the bare minimum. There was not even a dresser to place your clothes in...only little shelves in the closet. There was however, an 'entertainment center' type piece of furniture with a TV on it that served virtually no other purpose than supporting the TV. The relatively small space would have been better suited for a dresser with drawers and a TV on top. Also, the 'entertainment center' was so low to the ground it was difficult to see the TV from the bed...again, a tall dresser would have solved both of those issues. The AC worked great and the hotel, even with the bare minimum (no furniture in the porch in front of the hotel/ a couch and 2 chairs in the lobby) was not luxurious but was fine for the price I paid. "We stayed at the Richmond May 11-14 for our first anniversary - it was horrible from the beginning. While checking in, we were informed that 'something happened with our room' and that we would have to stay in one of their 'studio' rooms which is a block away from the hotel. The guy then proceeds to walk us down the street, around the corner, and down that street a little further to the 'apartment'. That wouldn't have been as big of a deal if the room hadn't been DISGUSTING. There were hairs on the walls, dirt all over the floor and walls, a blood/ketchup-like substance on the bathroom floor, mold on the shower curtain and floor, and the rank smell of stale urine....it was bad. There was also a lovely Keurig coffee set-up with NO coffee cups...?? We went back to the hotel and let them know, and all they did was offer us free continental breakfast (isn't that usually free anyway??) and let us know that the manager would be there the next morning at 9:00. We PAID for beach front and did NOT get beach front. I told the guy that we should get a discounted rate for that night because we did not have access to the amenities at the hotel at all. (He argued that yes, we did have access to everything, but, we did not get the gate access code until we got our room the next day...) We made due in the NON-beach front filthy 'apartment' for the night since it was 10:00 and a little late to go searching for a new hotel. When we arrived at the hotel around 10:30 the next morning to speak with the manager, we were told that the manager would actually not be in until 2:30 (what happened to 9:00??).....So, they said we could leave all of our stuff at the front desk and they would take it to our room as soon as one was available (whenever that was, since they couldn't give us a time), but where were we supposed to change? We were coming back and forth from the beach, etc, and we're supposed to leave our bags there??? So, after ALL that craziness, they did call later that afternoon to let us know that our room was ready. THEN, the next morning, we asked the guy at the front desk what we needed to do to get our free continental breakfast, and he replied (rudely and loudly) that the offer was only good for ONE day, to which we kindly responded that we had not yet had breakfast with them. He then looked up our room number and realized that he had had the wrong couple. Later in the day, we ran into the guy that had shown us to the 'apartment', and instead of asking if we got moved in ok, if the room was ok, apologizing for all of the ridiculousness, all he asked was whether we had returned the apartment key to the front desk yet....seriously?? So, RUDE staff, horrible service, oh, and paper thin walls. You can literally hear your neighbors' conversations. It's ridiculous. The last day we were there, we hung out at the beach most of the day, and came back to the hotel restaurant to grab some food around 2:30. The sweet waitress came by and gave us a menu and took our drink order. About a second later, a man came out of the kitchen, snatched the menu, and very rudely and loudly informed us that lunch was over and that all we could order was appetizers. In short, the weekend did not feel like vacation at all since we spent half of it staying in an 'apartment', trying to track down a manager, moving our luggage back and forth, and being kept awake by all of the noise....The only saving grace of the experience was at the front desk. He was considerate, understanding and friendly. We never did find a manager, so if you're the manager, you should start watching 'Hotel Impossible' and I still think we need a refund AT LEAST for the first night........but I won't hold my breath. Don't stay here!!"

"We spent 2 nights in May 2012 and overall experience was good. The staff was friendly and we were able to check in early because we were with a little child. The room was relatively clean, old carpet and furniture, but it seemed clean enough to spend a couple of nights. Having had a very bad experience in the hotel in the South Beach before this was good value for the price. Among positives were nice pool area, quite atmosphere, beach access and friendly staff at the restaraunt. Overall, a good alternative for a short stay. You are paying for location, not for the room."

I just got back after 5 days stay and had to take a moment to praise the hotel and its staff all of whom were very friendly and accomodating. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. The Verandah restaurant was a nice surprise. Hats off to Chefs for the great breakfasts and lunches. The pool and jacuzzi were clean and it was so relaxing under those palm trees that it was hard to leave to go to the beach. True that the hotel does not provide beach chairs which are $10 to rent but they do provide beach towels. It was interesting to see how many people from many of the hotels were happpy to sit on their towels. You can always walk 2 blocks to Walgreens or Wings and buy a beach chair. The only noise I experienced was when some partygoers returned at 5:00 AM talking loudly and slamming doors. Otherwise the hotel was quiet. I will definately return and reccommend this hotel to others. C.R. NYC"

"We stayed three nights and our stay was great. We had an oceanfront suite on the sixth floor. If you book an oceanfront room ask for your room to be on either the fifth or sixth floor as those floors will give you a better view of the pool and the ocean. The room was nice, Art Decor but a little small. The pool area is beautiful and there is a private walkway to the beach. The drinks are a little pricey but that's to be expected in that area. They allowed us to check in early on Friday when we arrived and also gave us a late check out on Monday. The staff are very friendly and keep the entire hotel extremely clean. There are no vending machines in the hotel so make sure you stock up on snacks and drinks for your room. Great stay and we would definitely go back."

"The hotel was in a great location and the restaurant inside has a great staff. The pool was nice and i enjoyed the private entrance to the beach..and that about the only positive thing i have to say. The rooms were not what i expected. Very small, and had very cheap bedding. The bath room had very outdated tiling and you could hear ever time the neighbors took a shower. I stayed @ a different hotel on my last visit and it definitely spoiled me in comparison to this hotel. The doormen rarely opened the door for you, there was no complimentary anything, and you had to pay to use their internet. I will most likely not be returning to this hotel."

"The hotel is in a perfect location. The room was very nice, and not too small for Miami. The hotel is old, but nicely decorated. Pool was great, always able to get a chair. Walk to everything. We tried the Airport Flyer Bus 150 to and from the airport. It worked out great, only 30 minutes and $2.35, a taxi is over $30."

"You cannot beat the location of this hotel. However, the 'oceanfront' is a tad deceiving when it comes to your experience on the beach. Yes, the hotel is across the boardwalk from the beach, but all the other hotels on the block that call themselves 'oceanfront' hotels have beach chairs, umbrellas, and waiter service free for their guests on the beach and this hotel does not. We didn't spend too much time on the beach because the hotel does have a wonderful pool and jacuzzi area. The restaurant is also excellent and you can sit by the pool all day in the shade or in the sun and they will bring you whatever you want. The traditional guest room left a bit to be desired. It was small, and bare bones but it did the job except for the shower. The water was sometimes unbearably hot even if you only put the cold water on and with the lack of water pressure I felt like the shampoo never came out of my hair. To sum up, pros: great pool, great location, great restaurant, WONDERFUL staff. Cons: bathrooms, no beach chairs."

"Very accomodating and helpful staff. Felt very welcome there. The location was good. Wish the package included chairs for the beach. Last year we stayed at another location on Ocean Dr and our package included chair rentals, which was nice. The pool was nice but could have been a little cleaner. Otherwise, very good."

"The Hotel staff was friendly. In particular the poolside grill staff was wonderful. We stayed three nights. The second day there was no housekeeping. After five attempts to report this so that we could have fresh towels, we finally were able to obtain fresh towels at midnight. We were given no excuse or consideration for this oversight. The location is good. They use some type of product to clean the carpet in the rooms which is slippery and will cause you slip and fall on the tile floor of the bathroom. The only electrical outlet not blocked by the bed did not work. Thus, I was unable to use my c-pap machine. Did not get a good nights rest the entire stay. All of the rear hotel entrances were closed at 11:00 p.m. Thus, you cannot access the hotel from the beach access at night. I will find somewhere else for our next trip to South Beach."

"I'm sorry to say my experience was not the best at this hotel. The description is deceiving. To sit by the beach cost starting at $25 for chairs and umbrella. Wi-fi cost too! Towels were a problem every day. Front desk was not helpful at all. They told us new guests were priority with laundry because the hotel does it's own. Front desk had no experience, with printing our boarding passes. Housekeeping seemed angry all the time. The nicest people were the doormen. Room's had paper thin walls and noisy hallways. Please check all prices before booking here! We won't stay here again."

"I lived in South Beach last winter for 6 months and took the time to research the different hotels there, so I would know which one to book for my future holiday's. ( In condo at time. ) This hotel was my #1 choice. I just spent last week there with my wife and another couple. The 4 of us agreed that it is excellent value for your money, located right on the beach and only seconds from Lincoln and Ocean Drive. Staff was great. Pool and hot tub at back of hotel is outstanding, with a gate leading to the boardwalk and beach. Please note that the sound proofing between rooms is typical for the age of this hotel but that is the only minor item mentioned. We don't think there is better value in South Beach. I will be recommending it to my friends without hesitation."

"Very nice place to stay at the north end of the South Beach strip. We had never been there before, but will stay at this hotel again next trip.
Be aware for drivers: parking is valet only and costs $35 plus tax! This was more than expected.
Staff and other guests were very friendly."
