"My two biggest issues were dirty rooms and bad customer service.

CONS:
1. There was numerous 'bed' bugs (bugs in the bed and on our curtains).
2. We were offered an upgrade away from construction, but told that we would have to pay an additional $150 to be placed in a different room. Sure we said...but then we were told that they would only accept cash! Hmmm, very shady. No thanks.
3. Even though I told the front desk staff that I was celebrating my birthday at their hotel, they still gave us a bad room. Our room smelled like smoke, had stains in bathroom, and our television did not work. Thankfully, we were able to move to a nonsmoking floor which smelled a lot better. The sleeping arrangements were not horrible, but they were not comfortable either. Beds were uncomfortable and I guess seeing bugs is what really threw me for a loop.
4. Service was terrible. I don't want to say that we were treated poorly because of our race; however, my husband, my mother, my best friend, and I were treated differently than the people from European decent.

Pros:
1. The buffet was great! Great variety and tasty food.
2. The pool area was nice and access to the beach was great.
3. 24-hour pool access.

One reviewer commented that there is free parking for someone with a handicap placard. My mother is handicapped and it was nice to find street parking instead of spending $80 total in parking fees.

Wish I had not spent as much money as I did for this hotel. Very displeased."

"The morning I left the hotel, my mind was not on looking my car over for damage. I did not stop anywhere on the way home. I pulled in my driveway and unpacked, went out to wash my car for the trip to S.C. and discovered scratches to my front fender on the drivers side. Needless to say, very disappointed in your valet service . I will say they were always very polite and friendly, but the one that was driving when this happend had to know it."

"My family and I came down for the famous Bahamian Goombay Festival and had a very nice stay at the hotel. The room was clean and of nice decor (except for the bathroom counters look like it had hard water stains on them which hadn't been clean very well) but everything else was good. The rest of the bathroom, the beds were clean and comfy, the bar downstairs was awesome, the pool was amazing and the beach access was perfect. We only stayed one day but enjoyed our brief stay. The hotel was also perfectly positioned, not directly in the heart of south beach but very close. We plan to return in a few weeks for the entire weekend."

"We loved staying at the Riu. It's a beautiful hotel with a great pool and great access to the beach. It's about 5-8 minutes or so from the heart of South Beach, but that was no big deal. It's a short cab ride away or about a 15 minute walk. Would stay here again!"

"Overall the hotel had a great feel. The lobby was comfortable. The staff was great. The pool was awesome and I was able to access the ocean directly. The ocean was a little dirty with dark seaweed but was refreshing.

It is about 15-20 blocks from the action so you will need to either cab or use the bus to get to the 'South Beach/Ocean Drive' bars and restaurants.

I would definitely stay here again.

"I came here to celebrate an anniversary and enjoyed my time here very much!! The pool area was nice and clean and with the beach right behind you, it made for 'paradise'. Enjoyed the breakfast buffet although they were nearly out of toppings for the cook when I came and ordered omelets. Also, stopped by and enjoyed the live entertainment for the last night we were there. All in all we both enjoyed our time here and would come again for sure!!"

"We stayed at the Hotel Riu after a 4-night cruise out of the Port of Miami. Cab to the Hotel was about $25. Althought check-in was not until 4:00, hotel staff took our bags and gave us towels to use the pool, and got us into our room by 1:00, so we were very pleased with that. the hotel lobby is very nice. While we did not eat or drink at the indoor bar & restaurant, they looked nice. The pool area is beautiful - plenty of loungers with umbrella's & tiki hut areas. The outdoor pool bar had good basic food w/ reasonable prices, and the salads were huge for lunch. The hotel is right on the beach, so this is nice - but it is rather far from 'south beach'. You would have to take a cab I think to get down to that area where the night life is. Rooms are basic - but ours was clean so no issues. Most of the ohter guests were not American and we heard an assortment of foreign languages around us. While I wouldn't seek this hotel out, I would have no qualms about staying there again. The price was reasonable and the pool/tiki bar area was great."
