My husband and I went to Destin, FL from May 21-25 with our 2 little kids and our nanny. After reading a whole lot of reviews on trip advisor, I decided on the pelican beach resort. Please note that this resort has 2 properties within walking distance of each other. This review is on the Pelican beach resort (ocean front) and not of the other property, The Terrace at Pelican Beach (not ocean front). I chose this property for a variety of reasons. The main reason is that the property is ocean front. We didn't want to have to drive to the beach with 2 kids daily, and have the car wet and dirty with sand. We wanted the convenience of being able to go back and forth to our unit because we have a one year old, and it's just easier to attend to his needs by being close to our condo. The property is right in the heart of Destin, with lots of shops and restaurants.
We stayed in unit 1407 on the 14th floor. There are 19 floors in the building. It is a one bedroom 2 full bathroom unit. There's a built-in bunk bed in the hall way. This unit was perfect for all 5 of us. Our one year old stayed in the room with us in a crib. The property itself does not provide a crib, but they have a company that they work with that rents cribs (you have to bring your own crib sheets. The company says that this is because of allergies to detergents). If you need a crib, call the front desk before your trip to get the number for the crib company, and make your reservation before your arrival, because they only have a limited amount of cribs. The rental is $12 per day. The longer you stay, the better the rate. My 4 year old was comfortable on the top bunk, and the nanny slept on the bottom bunk. There is a pull out sleeper sofa in the living room that we didn't use. The unit was updated with nice cabinets and stainless steel appliances. The floors were tiles (no carpet!). Please note that each unit is individually owned even if managed by the property manager. Since each unit is individually owned, each unit is decorated differently. Some are updated, and some are not! The website for the property has pictures and virtual tours of each unit. Unit 1407 was true to the pictures. It was exactly as shown in the picture. The balcony is the best part of the unit. All the one bedrooms ( called 1 bedroom Dolphin) are ocean front. The view is amazing, and so is the emerald color of the ocean. The owner of the unit provided all the utensils in the kitchen. There's a toaster, coffee maker, tons of plates and cups, pots and pans, broom and dustpan, vacuum cleaner etc. We didn't lack anything in the kitchen. There's a dish washer in the kitchen, but we didn't use it ( I like hand washing). You have to provide your own detergents, paper towel, coffee filters, salt and pepper etc. None was provided in the unit, not even a starter kit. There's a Wal-Mart 2 minutes away from the property, so we went there on our first day and got everything we wanted. The unit was fairly clean on arrival, but there was hair here and there in the unit. Someone had checked out a day before, and it seems the cleaning crew did a fast job in cleaning the unit. This is one of the reasons I gave the property a 4 star. We didn't complain to the front desk, so I can't say how they would have responded to the issue. There's plenty of patio chairs in the balcony. Lots of towels are provided in each units. Bring your own beach towels, as those are not provided. There was no washer/dryer in this unit, and I believe this is true for all units. There was a coin operated laundry on our floor, and I believe there's one on each floor. We didn't use the laundry.
The Wi-Fi was terrible in this unit. I found my self wishing we had dial up internet (believe me it would have been faster!) We didn't complain till our last night. I called the front desk, and they told me to rest the modem, and this seemed to make a big difference. I wished I had called earlier.
We went before the memorial day weekend because we didn't want to deal with the crowd, and it was less expensive. We booked directly from the property because they had the best rate, and also you can deal with them directly if one should have any issues while on the property. We got the spring rate. Summer rate started the Friday before memorial day. We stayed there for 5 days and 4 nights and paid about $900. I found this price to be a good deal based on my research of other similar properties.
I found the elevator to be a bit crowded and slow, and it wasn't even summer yet! Sometimes, we had to wait 4-6 minutes for one. This didn't spoil our experience. I'm just mentioning this for those who plan on visiting during peak times. There's a pool on the property, but we didn't use it.
We used Sunset beach rental (the company the property uses) for our beach chairs and umbrella. It's $30 per day for one umbrella and 2 chairs. You can bring yours, but you have to get up early to set it up. A lot of people did that, and it didn't seem to be a problem, since it wasn't peak season, so there was lot of space for everyone. This might be more of a problem during peak season, as the beach space appointed to this property is not large. It wasn't a problem for us, but reading from other reviews, it seems to be a problem during busy months. There's a tiki bar on the beach, but we didn't but any drinks from there.
All in all, We enjoyed the property, and would visit it again.
