Great reception when we arrived and the front desk were always very helpful. The room was nice but the bathroom very small. The bathroom could do with updating and the rooms would need air conditioning in hotter times. We were OK in May. Breakfast was average, not a huge selection of things, but the wine at 5.30 was a nice touch.

I enjoyed the nice breakfast in the cute dining area, and the spacious rooms. The building was old, but the rooms were nice and clean. The free coffee, cookies, and wine in the evenings were also nice. And the staff were very friendly.

Wonderful, helpful staff! So willing to make suggestions for dinner or sightseeing and to follow up with making reservations. They standout as first class! The decor is really interesting, little surprises throughout, including our third floor room with sixties artwork on the walls and heavy floral wall paper. The colors were bright and not coordinated, but in a strange way --- worked! Really fun and different! The room was large with a fireplace, nice touch. We kept the windows opened to get a... Read more

Loved this place. It has an old world English charm and lots of character. The staff were very friendly and the service was wonderful. The location was a couple blocks from Union Square but far enough away from milling tourists that we actually saw some of the neighborhood happenings and went to a really, really good local bar across the street and a delicious local pizza place down the block. We never would have experienced that in the touristy areas. The hotel itself is older, but that is part... Read more

But that's another story.). We had 2 rooms for our party-- 2 single room which easily slept 3 with a nice fold out love seat. Very spacious. This was our third visit to the White Swan Inn. The staff are friendly, the breakfasts are amazing and the wine and cheese happy hour is just icing on the cake. All this said, there were several issues during this visit. One, we had prearranged with the staff to have a friend share our room for one night and the room was not ready ...no extra towels, cups and the pullout couch was horrible. We needed to inform the staff who provided a roll away bed and and extra towels etc. Two, our room sup... Read more

Stayed at the White swan for four nights. Nice and clean rooms with a Chesterfield meets chic decor. Good location close to Union square and friendly staff. Especially appreciated the happy Asian guy who attended the afternoon wine-hour, always accommodating with a high service level. The reception staff were nice and friendly but most of them seemed a bit uninterested. Not unhelpful but really just doing the bare minimum. I would rate this hotel as good however as Trip Advisor say it's either Average or Very Good so it falls into the former category. Check in was painless and the room was large with a fireplace, fridge and coffee facilities. The bathroom although big was in need of refurbishment especially the shower area and the toilet when flushed was really, really loud. The bed was really comfortable and really high off the ground, nearly had to jump up to get in it! There are a lack of lights in the room, no... Read more

The White Swan has large, comfortable rooms, in an old (but well maintained and nicely decorated) inn. We particularly enjoyed the large common area on the first floor - great for just relaxing, plus they provide wine and snacks in the evening. Breakfast was good, and there are plenty of diners and other restaurants nearby. It was a little tricky to get connected to and stay on the WiFi, but overall the connectivity worked. I am not one to be critical of hotels. Give me a clean room and a bed and I'll be happy. However, what disappointed me here was essentially my expectations. I trust Tripadivsor reviews a great deal and when I saw how well it was reviewed I was pretty excited to check this place out. I was underwhelmed. It's in an old/ historic building and they have tried to keep the character, which I appreciate. However, the staff was just OK and the valet service took nearly an hour to retrieve my car. (They ... Great place to stay - the location was convenient for us, the staff is friendly & helpful. The price includes breakfast, happy hour, fresh cookies and free mini-bar! The one caveat I would offer is the elevator had to be manually operated while we were there. So, if you don't like stairs, I would not recommend this Inn. I would definitely return to the White Swan and have already recommended it to friends.

We had a suite. Nice rooms, comfortable bed, clean bathrooms. However, one of the TVs didn't work, the staff made a lot of loud noise in the the courtyard area too early in the morning (jarring us awake), and the staff appeared not to be invested in our comfort. Location is best feature - close to cable car lines, plenty of restaurants and small grocers as well as Union Square. After 3 stays at the White Swan I conclude you go there not for quiet or sleek amenities but to feel immersed in San Francisco. On certain trips here I still opt for the 4 star high-rise hotels... but something always leads me back to White Swan--the wing back chairs by your bay windows, the street noises which remind me of my decade+ living in the city, the parlor open to everyone not just the business elite, the warm staff on every level. This was our first experience staying in a bed and breakfast type inn, and we were very pleased! We loved that the hotel was so small, which meant it was very quiet in the evenings...just what we were looking for! The homemade breakfast in the morning was wonderful...100 times better than your standard continental breakfast. We never did take part in the evening wine reception, but I am sure that was lovely as well. Complimentary soda and water restocked daily in the room's mini frig was a n... Read more

Our first time stay, The room was spacious, beautifully decorated and the staff very friendly. The freshly baked cookies, fruits all day, wine and eats, free soft drinks gave a nice touch to the offerings. We loved the area where wine was served. Also, the location is very good, it is close to most of the tourist attractions. It would have been nice if the rooms had blinds/curtains to block out the sun during the day. Room would get very sunny and warm. The closet space felt less as we were sta... Read more

Complimentary water and soft drinks are provided, which is really appreciated. White Swan Inn is a cute and quirky hotel in downtown San Francisco. It's a small hotel, but the rooms were pretty big and comfortable and ours had a fireplace which was an amazing plus. The staff are incredibly helpful and kind which made the stay very enjoyable. The free wine and snacks at happy hour and included breakfast were a nice amenity, but the hotel is also walking distance to a number of great coffee shops and restaurants (particularly sushi places). The room was airy and large with wonderful comfy furniture and fire place - a peaceful haven to retire to each night. As part of our honeymoon, my wife and I stayed for 5 nights at White Swan Inn. On arrival (we were very early but allowed to check in) we were given advice about places to visit across the city, from a very friendly member of staff. In fact, all staff at the hotel were very helpful and friendly throughout. If you are looking for a 5 star business oriented hotel this is not a good choice, but if you are looking for a boutique European style hotel you could not make a better choice in San Fancisco. This is a hotel where after a day of sightseeing you will find guests from all over the world engaged in delightful conversation over a glass of wine before heading their seperate ways for dinner.

I recently stayed at the White Swan for two weeks. My feelings about this B&B are mixed. The decor seems to attempt to combine English Country and Sixties Pop Art that some have called quirky. I found it confused, confusing and not particularly relaxing. However, this is my personal taste and others clearly disagree. The overall ambiance is cosy and welcoming.
