The front desk guy Hansel was really nice. But the room itself was old, extremely small and no A/C. We slept w the windows open at night and could hear the nightlife way too loud. Beds were uncomfortable too. Don't think I'll stay here in the future.

We were roomed on the seventh floor - at the rear so we expected a good night`s sleep, how wrong we were!. By Mayoral command the city dustbins are emptied in the early hours, and yes - the bins are at the rear of the hotel! Broken sleep apart the hotel is superbly placed for trams, bus, and cable cars, the staff worked hard to maintain cleanliness to a high standard, and the desk staff were more than helpful with directions etc. Overall our 4 night stay was very enjoyable and s... This hotel is in a prime location close to Union Square. Given that it was Super Bowl weekend, the price am was " reasonable". Bathroom seemed recently updated and everything appeared clean. Towels were very old and worn. The room was very basic with very dated furnishings.

Worldwide each Hotel success is due to its people on the top of its location and accommodation. It was a return stay in my own case because San Francisco is offering a lot for a visitor. Some internal refurbishment work is planned for the next 12 months to be aware of prior booking.

Spent a week in this hotel. Small but good comfort. Extremely friendly staff and proper cleaning. Located very well for holidays or business. Only negative is the noise backyard with nighly garbage collection and homeless faiting over sleeping corners.

A reminder, this is a cheap/standard hotel, it's only expensive because it's in the heart of San Francisco. With that in mind... For those who doesn't want noise at night or early morning ask for the rooms in the middle of the building such as ##5, ##6, ##7 according to the room map (see uploaded photo) these are the ones without windows but have skylight. Rooms ##1-4 faces front of hotel and ##8-12 faces the ally. Like everyone says this hotel old, it doesn't have lot of modern amenities like i... Read more

The hotel itself is just ok, but it has a great location and you can move to pretty much anywhere from there. The hotel amenities are limited, but the staff is really helpful and tell you how to be in the city

I was a little worried after reading some of their reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. I arrived early & didn't expect them to have a room ready for me but the lovely man on the front desk moved a few things around so I didn't have to wait. He was rushed off his feet doing 10 things at once with phones ringing, deliveries coming in & all sorts of things but still took the time to help me. The room was nothing fancy but it was clean, had all the essentials - queen bed, bath/shower, toilet, tv... Read more

I stayed only one night, during the flight stopover. it's located at the center of the city, so you can walk around to catch a glimpse of San Francisco. Also it's close to Trolley line. The hotel building and the furniture seem quite old, but just enough for a traveler like me who use hotels only to sleep.

If this is the style & type of accomadation that is the offering of San Francisco then I will never return but stay in L A and have a day tour. When I say daylight at midnight my room was at the back of this Hotel facing a multi story parking station across a laneway, noise no problem BUT paper thin curtains and no blind ment that the brightness of the lighting of the car park was bright enough to similate daylight. Towels in the bathroom well I think they were towels were like sheets of Sand Pa... Read more

Needs atleast small fridge in room or at minimum an ice machine in hotel. Plus although air con prob not required in San Francisco do need at minimum a fan in room as way too noisy to keep windows open at night. Very helpful staff and as mentioned a++ location

At the heart of everything you want to see in San Fransisco. Staff tremendously helpful and friendly. Rooms are small and a little tired and dated..however that is reflected in the cost. Considering our visit was for sightseeing we used the hotel for sleeping and a base, and for this it was adequate.

Spent 4 nights at the Union Square Plaza last week/ I didn't book the room. Found out after checking in, no AC. Uncomfortable temp until the wee hours. The bed was the worst. I honestly believe I could feel every spring in the bed. Not much sleeping. One washcloth for 2 people. The last night...no washcloth at all. Desk attendants were all nice and friendly. We really enjoyed Hansel. Location of hotel was great. IF I get to return, may not stay in this hotel. I like my creature comforts...

The hotel is old, not clean, in a bad position (close to the center but in Tenderloin district...not safe zone of the city, let's see informations on the web). There is not air conditioned and not heating in the rooms. Attention: many rooms are facing to a court, were at 5:00 am -6:00 am start working noises and you will be....wake up!!!Courtesy is not a skill of the people working there: me and my wife asked for one more blanket because feeling cold during the night, the receptionist said "is n... The place is well placed. You can go anywhere from there, specially in downtown. Not that expensive if compared with others hotels. The hotel is old, it's clean. I got to tell you that I miss a minibar in the room...it will make the difference! Sometimes at night is a bit hard to sleep because it is noise.

We were in the 6th floor and felt as though the room had a huge smoke extractor-like next to the window, working day and night. Unbearable noise. Despite the heat, could not even think to open the window due to the noise. The hotel is located in union square, well-connected but far from being the nicest place of the city. Clean room (towels and sheets included). There were a lot of available sockets, TV worked well and the bathroom was quite spacious. Poor wifi, no fridge, no microwaves, no cof... Read more

Good location near to the action in downtown SF. The guys on reception are very friendly and helpful and it's all very laid back and informal. The building is cool, directly opposite an imposing theatre but the room is a little dated - although it didn't bother me, I suppose at some stage it must be due an upgrade. No complaints really.

Location was close to shops, restaurants, sites and public transport. Hotel staff were extremely helpful and everything they did was thorough, which shows how much they value their customers. However the rooms appeared to be in desperate need for an update. The private bathroom was cramped and the toilet had flushing problems which was rectified. Bed was comfortable and the WIFI was rather slow. We didn't spend much time in the rooms and would be okay for a short stay like ours was. Would recomm... Read more

Just minutes walk to union sq, which remained lively throughout the evenings, this place has got "location" going for it. The room did not have "a view", but was huge. The building itself feels like there is some history about it. Check in was smooth and there is a handily placed convenience store just a block away (opposite direction from union sq). Would happily return.

The hotel is in a great area, central to tons of restaurants and the tour buses. It's an old building and has been kept up decently. The service is amazing, everyone we talked to was very friendly. The rooms were very clean (if a bit musty smelling). The room wasn't large, and had one double bed, a nightstand and chair and a wardrobe with a tv. The bathroom was decently sized with a tub and shower and toilet and sink in the main room. There is NO air conditioning and since the windows in the ma... Read more

So stayed in this hotel in San Francisco with husband for 3 nights . It is a budget hotel and you will be hard pressed to find a hotel with private bathroom for the same price in the Union square area . First impressions were ' oh my God ' . The room was small and fusty smelling but closer inspection showed the bedding to be spotless and the bathroom to be very clean . We used it as a base only and for this purpose, the hotel was fine . Well placed close to union square but bordering on the ... Read more

I stayed for a full week, partly on business to attend a conference, but also meeting family over the weekend. No place is cheap in San Francisco, but this hotel had everything I needed: a comfortable room in a good location where my sister could join me over the weekend. I saved at least $50 a night at least (with free WiFi) compared to the conference hotel (which charged an additional $7/day for WiFi in the room). Nothing is super new/spiffy but everything works well: person at front desk,... Read more

Great location. Clean hotel and friendly staff. Bathrooms very tiny, no aircon, lots of street noise even on top floor. Plumbing was a bit dodgy but it was rectified with a plumber sent within a half hour. The lobby was very hot. Staff cannot be faulted they were great and for a budget hotel it was ok. This hotel met our expectations upon its description etc.

Stayed in this hotel for 4 nights, yes it is old but the LOCATION is brilliant and the level of cleanliness top notch. You definitely wouldn't find better for your money. It is a bit noisey on bin day but you are in the heart of a city.
