A grand old hotel but with modern room ammenities. Our stay here was excellent, all the staff were very helpful, and the hotel is in a great location alongside Union Square. We will stay here again when in San Francisco.

My friends and I stayed here for a 2 night stay while doing a California road trip. The dressed up bell hops greeted us as we pulled up. The hotel is old but beautiful, the rooms were decent size, nice decor, perfect for a two night stay. We didn't eat or drink in the hotel as we were too excited to explore San Francisco. This hotel location was perfect for that. The cable car is right outside the lobby door, everything you need is a quick walk away. It was a bit pricey but worth it for the grea... Read more

Bathrooms very small, single sink. Trouble with water. Some had only hot and some had only tepid. We upgraded thinking we would get a bigger, nicer room and all we got was a corner room with an extra window in the living area (curtain wouldn't stay up) and one in the bathroom (who cares).

The location is great for union square and the shopping (if you don't mind the large number of down and outs). The hotel staff were all excellent. Note that the hotel is old so don't expect really large rooms and the bathrooms are a bit cosy however they they are very clean and tidy. I was disappointed in the bar which was basically the hotel lobby and very cold, I had expected a proper lounge area. I probably wouldn't stay in central San Fransisco if I went back but I would stay again if I did

We were ment to stay for four nights but checked out after one. Whole hotel had a musty smell, staff all poorly dressed no uniform. Doormen clothes were so worn they had holes in them. Rooms were dirty and small , bathrooms were so small you had to turn side ways to get in then wriggle round to shut the door. Long dark hairs found in the bath and stale smelling towels. We choose this hotel for its location which is good but that is all its got going for it. All needs to be renovated and brought ... Read more

Arrived after a long drive, made longer by the amount of traffic getting to the hotel. There's no signage to say where to park so had to pull up on the busy street & wait for a beefeater to become available to valet the car. Had to wait to check in as a problem with the computers (not their fault I guess) the lobby/bar/lounge (all one area!) is dark and dingy. The room is very small & musty smelling, the window does not open, but it may as well be as a draft comes in & you can hear everything fr... Read more

Greeted by the most photographed man in San Francisco, our stay at the Sir Francis Drake started out and continued to be everything we hoped for. Our beautifully decorated room was on a high floor and we could see out to Union Square. The location is perfect, right in the center/heart of the city, with a cable car stop right outside. We were a group of twenty on an office outing to San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. The hotel is right by Union Square and within walking distance of several good restaurants. The restaurant in the ground floor of the hotel is excellent so you don't have to go far to have a good meal. I recall having stayed in the hotel as a pre teen about fifty five years ago ( yes, 55 years ago!). Needless to state, the facilities are antique but well maintained. I get what most reviewers have said both good and bad. Yes it's an old hotel so rooms and bathrooms run small so can't fault hotel on that. However the upkeep is below standards especially for a kimpton hotel. Bathroom door frame falling apart, not the cleanest bathroom either. I pricelined and got this hotel so despite being a kimpton rewards member, nothing for being a part of them meant anything and was treated as such. A very nice hotel for the money. It has a bit of 1930s Art Deco style and is really well located in a central spot. It was easy to find on Powel street and only a short walk from the Bart train from the Airport. The wine tasting was a nice touch each day between 5 and 6. All the staff were helpful and friendly. We had a great stay.

Our room with two double/queen beds felt small but we were three people which says a lot. Well, we liked the location. It was easy to ride the BART to downtown from the airport and walk 3-4 blocks up a hill to the hotel. While we were there it was easy to catch a bus to go where we wanted. So the main reason we liked this hotel was for the location. The bed was comfortable which helped to make up for the super small bathroom. Also we liked the extra pillows they gave us. It was clean but the bathroom was so small that when I sat on the toilet I hit my head on the sink. Also yo... Read more

I just stayed there for two days on business. The good news is that the staff is friendly and helpful, and the location is good, on the north side of Union Square. The medium news is that the hotel, once a stellar residence, is faded, a little run down, and in need of a good redo. The bad news is that elevators are impossible. On multiple times daily, we had to wait between five and ten minutes for an available elevator. One evening there was a line of twenty waiting to go to their rooms. ... Read more

This is the SIR Francis (Drake). Located around the corner from Big Brother, this is a little old boutique hotel with a "Beefeater" out front. It's fun, it's historic, and it's camp. The neighbor noise was the only complaint we had last time(very noisy neighbors) and this time we have no complaint. The only thing I would advise is that if your a light sleeper(the wife) look into a jr suite. It wasn't that much more and it made a huge difference to us.
