The hotel rooms are comfortable, and it's within walking distance of some of San Francisco's local attractions. The hotel rooms includes free breakfast, but it's mostly just bread, coffee and juice, so do t count too much on that.

The Opal is located in central San Francisco, perfect for walking to restaurants and bars. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, making the check-in / check-out process smooth. We were able to access free wifi which was nice. We were able to leave our bags the last day and pick them up before our flight which was great. The room was small, but clean and cozy. Overall, the hotel fit our needs perfectly.

I've stayed at the Opal 8 times so far and have always been satisfied. The last time I had some problems with my room being situated in an area that was noisy due to outside construction, but the employees worked with me until I found a satisfactory room. Very convenient to the opera, symphony, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and so much more, all in walking distance. I would definitely stay here again.

Had a very pleasant stay at the Opal in May of 2016. The rooms were clean and the beds very comfy. Had a nice breakfast with many choices to please everyone. Convenient location to restaurants and public transportation, Nice lobby area where they have a piano playing and free wine and cheese on certain nights. The staff went out of there way to be very helpful and friendly. Would definately stay again on future trips to this beautiful city!! Sue Cory

I lived in SF for 6 years, not too far from this very hotel off Geary, and had seen this hotel time and time again. Coming to SF as a visitor it was the perfect hotel for our single night. It is across the street from Tommy's Joynt, right by Polk Street bars, very active Geary Blvd, and not too far from Civic Center. The staff was helpful and even gave us early check in. Breakfast was ready earlier than expected and when i called a few days later to ask about a pricing issue, they were helpfu... Read more

For my daughter's wedding in SF, we chose the Opal as our hotel for family and friends from out of town. My daughter informed me my sole responsibility was picking the perfect room for her and her soon to be husband - since we got into town a day before they did. When my husband and I informed the night desk person that we needed to help pick her room, he was amazing! He allowed us to view maps and actual rooms until we found the perfect one for her. In addition, they opened up the breakfast... Read more

I came here for business because it was close to work. I like that it had a secure door for entry. The concierge let me know that renovation was going on, but it was on floors that would be above my room. I didn't hear a thing. Due to the renovations, there was no coffee pot in my room, but there was constant service on the main floor for both coffee and tea. The room was quaint and clean and served my purpose. The hotel connect to Mel's Diner. It is also close to many main city attractions.

I spent a week at The Opal when I first moved to San Francisco. Its a nice hotel, close to a lot of cool places around the city. Its in the Tenderloin, so its a little shady around the hotel - but you just a few blocks from Lower Nob Hill, which is a super cute neighborhood. Good stuff, reasonable prices, 2/5 breakfast, spacious rooms.

Overall, the Opal ended up being a good place to stay for a few nights - no frills, but lots of character. The location on the edge of the Tenderloin is really not as worrisome as I had originally thought - yes, the hotel keeps its doors locked at all times as a precaution, but during the day I did not feel unsafe in the area as a woman alone. Just keep some city smarts about you and know which direction to head from the hotel (ask the staff if you're unsure). After dark, I relied on cars to ta... Read more

This was my second stay at this hotel. The room we stayed in the first night was a little bit dated, but still relatively nice. We had a view of the street and it was pretty fun to people watch. This time, however, we were given one of the updated rooms and the two rooms DO NOT COMPARE! The room was gorgeous! The shower was incredible.

Went during my family's spring break trip for 3 nights. When you walk in the room isn't particularly impressive but it's very clean and comfortable-looking. Except for the oddly lingering smell of vinegar that I (out of 4 other people in my family) was the only one to smell. I'm not sure what neighborhood this hotel is listed in, but if you asked me, it's in the Tenderloin. If you walk to the right of the hotel on Geary you start to enter the sea of homeless people lined up and down the streets.... Read more

I stayed at the opal with a group for business in June. We paid a huge price for the rooms, due to the over-inflation of SF and demand, due to a conference being in town. My initial room (I was moved) was one of the worst I have ever stayed in. It smelt of stale tobacco (as did most of the hotel), the bed was lumpy, the shower underpowered, bathroom poorly lit, a/c didn't work properly and there was a large neon sign directly outside my window. For the price it's very reasonable. It's close enough to the main sights, we walked to Union Square with no problem. We stayed 3 nights. The best thing is the location - just 15 minutes walk to city center and Chinatown. Breakfast is simple but better than all the motels we stayed at later during our holiday in California. The room was OK, although the aircondition was a bit noisy. Positive is that they have a garage although a bit expensive, but on the other hand it is very hard to find car parking in the city.

The Opal is an older hotel, a classic. That it is.. And with older, there are going to be a few things that don't measure up to new. So if you want newer and updated- go someplace else. However, if you want charm and character and small details that add up to "quite nice", I would highly recommend. For the price, the beds and pillows- the best! The hotel is located at short distance of the city center, and many places can be reached by walking. Being at the crossing of Geary/O'Farell and Van Ness, it offers a good access to public buses, a cheap option to visit the City using the Muni Passport. The hotel looks a bit old in terms of decoration, but the room are clean, quite large, and the beds are comfortable. The internet access is never a problem. The breakfast is good. Price has been reasonable and is now suffering the general i... Read more

The reason I stayed at the Opal before on a business trip was because of its level of service and location versus the cost. On this trip however, the lustre seems to have worn off. The wi-fi in the room never worked which made working impossible and despite being told that it was because so of the weekend and the number of users, it continued not to work throughout my stay. The room itself was spacious and comfortable though old and lots of things were starting not to work, like the light in the... Read more

I didn't know that major construction was next door to the hotel and that made me nervous. However, I did not hear any noise from the outside! The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The staff were very attentive and helpful even when my CC had problems. Sandra and Rodger worked with me and resolved the problem. A great way to start a trip! Sudhir was very accommodating with holding my bags until my train time. This was a good trip and the Opel made it better! thank you!

We decided to stay at this hotel since it was budget friendly and I do not regret it. We were not looking for an over the top fancy hotel since it was our first time in the city. We loved the friendliness of the hotel staff and how quite the hotel was. It is in a great location to every part of the city. We enjoyed it, and the diner next door was also a plus. We got back to the hotel late one night and had not had dinner and it was so nice to have something so close.

The Opal is clean, convenient and close to an excellent deli, Mel's, which is just across the street. Parking is a bit dicey, and one has to manage stairs with a suitcase at the front door entrance on Van Ness. Six of us stayed there and found it great.

We have stayed with the Opal several times for both recreational visits and for medical visits to San Francisco. We have been pleased with the services as well as the very helpful staff. We will continue to stay with Opal in future visits to the City.

Went Thursday night, tired from a long day of travel. Very nice people, helpful. Large portions, hot cut in front of you. Remember they only take cash. But you will see why, prices very low, food very good. Right across from the Opal hotel. Over 60 year's in business.

My husband and I first stayed at the this hotel because it was close to a venue where we were seeing a show. We were upgraded to an executive sweet, view of Van Ness, and windows that OPEN! The bed was so comfortable! Then the complimentary breakfast in the morning is FANTASTIC! There is so much to choose from. It's a great way to start your day of adventure in San Francisco. We just took our girls back to surprise them and have them experience the quaint, old school hotel that doesn't look like... Read more

This place is so good, I am tempted to give it a bad review so I can get a room next time I am in town. I recently stayed there (for the third time) and enjoyed it. It s not a luxury hotel but it has everything: dining in the vicinity (Tommy's Joint, across the street is not to be overlooked), public transport routes, complimentary WiFi and breakfast, and a fine, trained staff. Rooms are a little small, but overall, It is excellent value for the money.

In a city full of hotels charging extortionate rates the Opal was a real find and great value for money. Okay so it is a little tired, the rooms are a tad on the small side and the complimentary breakfast is very basic but hey, you get what you pay for in life and on that basis this hotel was a gem. The only thing really missing from the room was a safe but there are safety deposit boxes available at reception so no big deal as it turned out. Good location on Van Ness with a bus stop right out... Read more

Staff was Amazing! We came in the morning after long ride , very tired. We knew that check-in is only at noon, but SUDHIR and MARNIE were so thoughtful and found available room for us. Their welcome was warm and honest, and during all the stay we felt welcomed. Great location - 15 min. walking from Union Square and 25 min. from peer 39. The beds were awesome!! I think that the hotel breakfast was the best among all the hotels we visited, if they could serve a tomato - it was cool. And also the... Read more

The exceptional price difference between the booking rate and final charge was a bit of a shock. %16 taxes should be included in the booking and the $46 parking charge was not mentioned when I was given the pass. The room had a VERY strong odor, air freshener or cleaner used to excess. Could not open the windows.

Situated on Van Ness Avenue, Highway 101, the Opal is easy to find if you've hired a car or on public transport. A great location for walking around the centre of the city - Painted Ladies, Fishermans' Wharf, etc and there are easy to catch buses and trains. Breakfast sufficient, didn't try the restaurant/diner next door but there are other restaurants nearby. We would stay there again.

The Opal is an old hotel with lots of charm. One of the things that makes this hotel a gem is it's convenience. It has secure parking. Located on Geary and Van Ness, it's super easy to get anywhere in the city by bus Room is clean and spacious, wifi works well and breakfast is more then adequate The staff was great in getting me settled and tending to my needs.

I love this hotel! I stayed here when I was in town for Outside Lands a few months ago. It was prime location and loved the vibe of the hotel. The lobby is beautiful with stained glass and the decor is more of a classic feel. Had to come here again and some of the rooms are a bit updated and different! LOVE the modern touch to the newer rooms as well the more classic rooms. Really cool decor! The staff is super friendly and love the immediate surrounding area with cool coffee shops. Definitely ... To have a place that's clean and central to the Van Ness area, this is a solid 3-star hotel. The decor is outdated, the rooms are not very spacious and the amenities are sparse (e.g., no fridge or room safe). But the bed is decent, the TV works and you're close by to the movie theater, Mel's Diner, Japantown, City Center and the rates are decent for SF.

The opal is located very centrally and absolutely easy to get to. They offer reasonable rates (always considering that San Fran isn't cheap), have an average but consistent continental breakfast and stellar customer service. The front desk folks were always willing to help and give any information I might have while being calm and courteous. The rooms are basic but clean and quiet, and the hotel has an old charm!
