The hotel is old and worn. The carpets were very dirty and worn out in our room. The bathroom tile was also grungy in the corners. It was quiet at night. The breakfast was a decent continental buffet. Coffee was available in the lobby also.

Just what we expected. Large rooms, nicely decorated, excellent staff. Complimentary continental breakfast, coffee in the lounge all day. This made our first visit to San Francisco a lovely experience.

Very nice- quiet rooms- view of the downtown. Lots of privacy. Tommys across the street is a great place to eat any time of day. Close to bus and trolley pickup- Not too far from the action - but far enough to have some quiet time.

Excellent hotel. Very friendly and helpful staff, great decor and facilities and walkable from the centre of town (with care about your route!). The staff particularly are great, and helped us out hugely during our stay. Just a couple of minutes walk away is one of the most amazing churches on the planet, St Mary's, go check it! The Opal is an excellent hotel, and in a good spot, though it's wise to be a little cautious about the neighbourhood a little to the south and east... Uber or Lyft in a... Read more

Even though they are in the process of remodeling The Opal, it is a historic, and remarkable hotel. It is on Van Ess Ave. , and we never had to take our car. We rode the bus right from the door anywhere we needed to go in San Francisco. It is a historic and beautiful hotel. The rooms are small, cozy, but great for couples. The staff was very helpful and the continental breakfast was wonderful! This is our new place to stay when visiting San Francisco. Thank you.

Staff are always friendly! The building is a bit dated, but they are renovating; never bothered by any noise. Excited to see the finished rooms, new decour when completed. Great food locations: Mel's Diner, Franks (best pastrami I ever had!!) and an Afghani restaurant steps away. Short walk or taxi/uber to the Theatre district and the Civic Center. Would be nice to have Ice machines on each floor.

I stayed here in the end on August 2016 for a work related trip. The front desk was not able to find my reservation upon check in, even with the confirmation number, email address or credit card used. Thankfully they did have a room available. The room was small, it had the bed, TV, tiny bathroom and a wardrobe. There was no alarm clock or in room coffee maker. But there is coffee in the lobby all the time. The breakfast was nice. One night during my stay the guest in a room next to mine was yel... Read more

Needed a last minute place to stay while visiting family and this place was perfect. It was our second visit to the Opal and we will stay there again. The Opal is clean, spacious and the staff are warm and helpful. Especially Claudia and Sandra.

The opal is located very centrally and absolutely easy to get to. They offer reasonable rates (always considering that San Fran isn't cheap), have an average but consistent continental breakfast and stellar customer service. The front desk folks were always willing to help and give any information I might have while being calm and courteous. The rooms are basic but clean and quiet, and the hotel has an old charm!
