The hotel rooms are comfortable, and it's within walking distance of some of San Francisco's local attractions. The hotel rooms includes free breakfast, but it's mostly just bread, coffee and juice, so do t count too much on that.

The Opal is located in central San Francisco, perfect for walking to restaurants and bars. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, making the check-in / check-out process smooth. We were able to access free wifi which was nice. We were able to leave our bags the last day and pick them up before our flight which was great. The room was small, but clean and cozy. Overall, the hotel fit our needs perfectly.

I've stayed at the Opal 8 times so far and have always been satisfied. The last time I had some problems with my room being situated in an area that was noisy due to outside construction, but the employees worked with me until I found a satisfactory room. Very convenient to the opera, symphony, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and so much more, all in walking distance. I would definitely stay here again.

Had a very pleasant stay at the Opal in May of 2016. The rooms were clean and the beds very comfy. Had a nice breakfast with many choices to please everyone. Convenient location to restaurants and public transportation, Nice lobby area where they have a piano playing and free wine and cheese on certain nights. The staff went out of there way to be very helpful and friendly. Would definately stay again on future trips to this beautiful city!! Sue Cory

I lived in SF for 6 years, not too far from this very hotel off Geary, and had seen this hotel time and time again. Coming to SF as a visitor it was the perfect hotel for our single night. It is across the street from Tommy's Joynt, right by Polk Street bars, very active Geary Blvd, and not too far from Civic Center. The staff was helpful and even gave us early check in. Breakfast was ready earlier than expected and when i called a few days later to ask about a pricing issue, they were helpfu... Read more

For my daughter's wedding in SF, we chose the Opal as our hotel for family and friends from out of town. My daughter informed me my sole responsibility was picking the perfect room for her and her soon to be husband - since we got into town a day before they did. When my husband and I informed the night desk person that we needed to help pick her room, he was amazing! He allowed us to view maps and actual rooms until we found the perfect one for her. In addition, they opened up the breakfast... Read more

I came here for business because it was close to work. I like that it had a secure door for entry. The concierge let me know that renovation was going on, but it was on floors that would be above my room. I didn't hear a thing. Due to the renovations, there was no coffee pot in my room, but there was constant service on the main floor for both coffee and tea. The room was quaint and clean and served my purpose. The hotel connect to Mel's Diner. It is also close to many main city attractions.

I spent a week at The Opal when I first moved to San Francisco. Its a nice hotel, close to a lot of cool places around the city. Its in the Tenderloin, so its a little shady around the hotel - but you just a few blocks from Lower Nob Hill, which is a super cute neighborhood. Good stuff, reasonable prices, 2/5 breakfast, spacious rooms.

Overall, the Opal ended up being a good place to stay for a few nights - no frills, but lots of character. The location on the edge of the Tenderloin is really not as worrisome as I had originally thought - yes, the hotel keeps its doors locked at all times as a precaution, but during the day I did not feel unsafe in the area as a woman alone. Just keep some city smarts about you and know which direction to head from the hotel (ask the staff if you're unsure). After dark, I relied on cars to ta... Read more

This was my second stay at this hotel. The room we stayed in the first night was a little bit dated, but still relatively nice. We had a view of the street and it was pretty fun to people watch. This time, however, we were given one of the updated rooms and the two rooms DO NOT COMPARE! The room was gorgeous! The shower was incredible.

Went during my family's spring break trip for 3 nights. When you walk in the room isn't particularly impressive but it's very clean and comfortable-looking. Except for the oddly lingering smell of vinegar that I (out of 4 other people in my family) was the only one to smell. I'm not sure what neighborhood this hotel is listed in, but if you asked me, it's in the Tenderloin. If you walk to the right of the hotel on Geary you start to enter the sea of homeless people lined up and down the streets.... Read more

Good hotel for the price. It was clean, old world charm, and the staff was friendly and accommodating. I had a problem with the blow dryer in my room and the staff immediately replaced it. Continental breakfast every morning was good. Coffee available in the lobby at all hours. They even do complimentary wine and cheese on Tuesdays from 5-6p!! It's about a 10-15 minute walk to union square. We used the MUNI (bus) to get around the city. There's about 3-4 stations right next to the hotel so it'... Read more

I stayed at the opal with a group for business in June. We paid a huge price for the rooms, due to the over-inflation of SF and demand, due to a conference being in town. My initial room (I was moved) was one of the worst I have ever stayed in. It smelt of stale tobacco (as did most of the hotel), the bed was lumpy, the shower underpowered, bathroom poorly lit, a/c didn't work properly and there was a large neon sign directly outside my window. The hotel offered to change my room, but then had m... Read more

Huge rooms and free breakfast! The staff were really helpful and friendly. Yes it's dated but I like the feel of the place, like a classic style of hotel. The bathroom was a good size and clean. For the price it's very reasonable. It's close enough to the main sights, we walked to Union Square with no problem. San Fran is very expensive for accommodation so this is a good option for budget minded people. The hotel booked us a van to the airport which was a scary experience! Other than that, if y... Paid a deposit worth more than our total stay, still have not received the deposit back so if you want to access your funds while on holiday, do not stay here! I'm back home now and the hold has still not been lifted on my credit card. San Fran accommodation is super expensive so if you are looking for a good budget option then The Opal is for you. Situated in the Tenderloin district this is an older hotel but has a lovely foyer reception area and modernised breakfast room. The room was a King and large enough. We stayed 3 nights. The best thing is the location - just 15 minutes walk to city center and Chinatown. Breakfast is simple but better than all the motels we stayed at later during our holiday in California. The room was OK, although the aircondition was a bit noisy. Positive is that they have a garage although a bit expensive, but on the other hand it is very hard to find car parking in the city.

The Opal is an older hotel, a classic. That it is.. And with older, there are going to be a few things that don't measure up to new. So if you want newer and updated- go someplace else. However, if you want charm and character and small details that add up to "quite nice", I would highly recommend. For the price, the beds and pillows- the best! The complimentary breakfast has a great variety. Other comp. perks on certain nights.. Catch a bus to Fisherman's Wharf right outside hotel. And what... Read more

This place is good for what you pay, although it doesn't have too many amenities it worth it, great staff, good location, clean bedrooms, the breakfast included was awesome for the continental type. The only thing I didn't like was the amount of many you have to pay for the parking lot but I guess it is expensive everywhere, so I will definitely stay here again.

Hotel is from the early 1900. The bad: Smells like an old hotel, Old mattress with prominent springs ..Not the best experience for sleeping. Very noisy location. Even with the windows closed it is very noisy. To have hot water you need to let the water run for 5 minutes. Eventually it becomes hot. The good: Polite and excellent service. Good cleaning . Had to attend meeting downtown in the early morning. Looked at several options which either were a long drive or too expensive. This place had good review for location. The location is great. Parking is available for $48 which for downtown seems to be average. It is an older hotel but the staff is great and the rooms are clean. They serve a continental breakfast which is okay. Next movie theatre which was great. Definitely would utilize this place again.

Stay here because it had on site parking, at a cost. But you can go in and out with the vehicle without an extra fee. As my title states " old style" Hotel, rooms are clean, lifts are small and slow, most of the time we would walk the stairs. Breakfast doesn't have a microwave for hotel users. No coffee in the rooms. But its probably the norm in San Francisco.

Its a fine hotel and a good location. It is a good value for the area. However, I wouldn't expect much! The free breakfast is nice, but other than that, I couldn't wait to get out of there. The rooms are stuffy, smell moldy and have some VERY outdated decor. Weird pictures on the walls, crusty blankets and super uncomfortable, small pillows. The opal is a neat city location near bus stops to get around San Francisco. Wifi is good. Breakfast is simple but all you can eat and served from 6:30am to 10. The breakfast room is small so places to sit can be an issue during 'Rush hour'. There are tonnes of places to eat nearby but this part of town has a fair number of homeless people. We stayed here for the first week of August 2016. I'm writing this review from the very pleasant and comfortable lobby of the Opal so as not to disturb my wife and daughter who went to bed early. With a 4 yr old in tow we would normally stay at a more expensive hotel but came here on vacation with friends who first found this place and we cautiously agreed to join them. We arrived at the hotel around noon very weary after a long flight from Australia. A smiling Sandra welcomed us and said she'd see what she could do about getting us into a room earlier than 3pm check-in time. Indeed, it was our lucky day!
