My wife and I selected this hotel based on the location, the description and the pictures posted on the internet page. We chose wrong. There is no AC. There was no one to help with luggage. There is an old elevator to service the entire property. It is very cumbersome to get the luggage cart in and out of the elevator. The room was a suite. There was 1 tv in the bedroom. The couch was as wide as the room. There were no closets but there was a large whirlpool bath in the bedroom. We spent 1 nig... Read more

This is a spotless charming old European style hotel. Out even has an small old style Italian restaurant on the ground floor where Italian style continental breakfast was served. We had dinner elsewhere but when we stopped in later for a glass of wine the aromas were delicious and the owner is delightful. We would highly recommend this hotel - unbelievable value !

We have been planning our daughters graduation for months .We booked 3 rooms ,all were to be double rooms so the family could be together. It took over 45 minutes to check in even though I had prepaid $2,486. The front desk would NOT honor our request they separated us into tiny 1 bed rooms and changed our rooms while we were at Golden Gate Park. WITHOUT our consent! They said reservations can not be guaranteed by any outside travel agent only that a bed will be provided. This is unacceptable ... Read more

We were allocated room 403 - a tiny shoe box! Bed pushed up against the wall and no furniture to set anything on. Not even one shelf to lay items down in bathroom. Breakfast was a joke....6 tables but 4 floors of 10 rooms - work that out! I only found the female receptionist worthy. Both male receptionist especially the Indian male rude and unprofessional. It's centrally located which is it's only good feature. Within 2 hours of check in the lift was being repaired, our coffee maker wouldn'... Read more

The location is not that bad, and the hotel neither. It is just that it is an old building, yet it may have its charm. You could try, at least once. But the room is small and there may be other options for the same price. They do have cheese and wine in the evening, however as you can imagine it is not of the best quality.

The hotel itself is situated in an old building on a perfect location in SF The entrance is nice, the 1920's WOODEN elevator is awesome, but the rooms are TINY. They're nice and clean but a bit tired. Our wallpaper was ripped in some places and more than one knob of the antique cabinets were missing. The bed was also very small. Almost too small for two people. Overal the atmosphere of the place is very cool, but the size of the rooms are a serious letdown.

Restored to its 1906 grandeur, this hotel is steeped in old-world luxury and full of charm. The lobby and rooms are decorated with lush wallpaper, chandeliers, paintings, antique furniture and plenty of gold accents all around. The rooms are beautiful and well-furnished with everything one would need: microwave, fridge, coffee machine, tv, wifi and a luxurious ensuite private bath with tub. The beds are huge with cloud-like soft mattresses and we had four plush pillows per person! I had a reall... Read more

the staff are nice - but the rest was awful. The "deluxe" room is the smallest hotel room I've ever been in - two people have to take turns standing aside to be able to walk around the bed. The bathroom is tiny too. The bed was so soft and lumpy it will take weeks for my back to recover. The place is not air conditioned, so it got very, very hot. They provided a fan which showed 3 settings but they are all the same -- too high. The breakfast is a joke, the space is too small to hold more than ... Read more

The beginning of our holiday in Calafornia and a 3 night stay at this Hotel within a 20 mins walk from Union Square. Booked on a well known hotel booking site I should have looked more carefully at the reviews! Set in a busy street you hardly notice the entrance and the reception is underwhelming. All is overdone gold, glass and mirrors everywhere small area with a large high division between you and the receptionist. The hotel is close to everything. You can walk or catch the cable car to anywhere in the city. We actually walked to Fisherman's Wharf from the hotel. There are a few steep hills in between but it was a nice 30 minute walk. The outside of the hotel isn't much to look at, but the lobby is nicely decorated. It's very Victorian and has a European vibe. The afternoon staff at the front desk was very nice. The check in process was quick. Our King room was very clean and nicely decorated. The crown mo... I chose this hotel because it was located in a safe neighborhood. It's about a 15 min walk to the Civic Center, 30 mins to the Wharf, Ferry Building, shopping street, Union Square etc. I didn't take the public transport, and decided to walk everywhere instead. The hotel in itself is old, but unique. Has a Victorian feel to it. I paid for a deluxe room, and I found the room to be comfortable - for one person. It will be too small for a couple. The rooms don't have AC, so take this into considera... Read more

I'm a regular visitor to San Francisco, and a former resident. When I am not staying in Oakland with friends, this is the hotel I stay in, because it's got three things that make it crucial for a regular to SF who doesn't want the corporate business hotel in a box: 1. Vintage design and old fashioned San Francisco allure -- they've even got one of those old timey elevators where you have to press the button to bring the lift and a folding gate that you have to open and close to start the moveme... We arrived mid-evening after a 2 hour wait to get through passport control with grumpy officious customs officials. The area is down-trodden and shabby. The room was shoddy, drab, dingy, poorly furnished with broken and dangerous electric sockets. There was damp and discoloured paper on the walls and a burnt iron- shaped scorch in the carpet. It all felt grimy. The room overlooked 4 walls. We left immediately.

My wife booked this hotel for four nights as part of our California trip. I was a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews here on Trip Advisor. All I can say is our experiance has been excellent. Clean, comfortable, good sized Queen room. Very helpful and pleasant staff, the room was quiet....yes, there's some noise from the room above but no more than you would experiance in any hotel. No problems with the immediate area, very handy for the cable car on California to head down town. A... Read more

Stayed for 3 nights at the Nob Hill Hotel. The location was great for us. It was a 15 minute walk to Union Square. The hotel was very reasonably priced in comparison to a lot of SF hotels - we found the city to be pretty expensive in general. It was clean and very comfortable. Sure, it was worn in places but perfectly adequate for a 3 night stay. It would probably be average to good in a city with less expensive accommodation options. The small roof terrace was a nice place to sit, and the recep... Read more

There were holes in the couch. The chair had so many stains on it,I refused to sit on it without putting a towel on it first. I didd NOT stay there, I got my stuff, went to the front desk and told them i am not staying in this DUMP. Bed was good, room was nice and roomie (suite), not clean, hall ways smell like cat pee, vending machines don't work, has a rugged Victorian style with old school elevator. Free coffee and free wine (at certain times) in the lobby. Great location for walking to union square. Beware of tenderloin at night (ask for walking directions).

after reading reviews of this hotel we were a little concerned. However, we found it very enjoyable. Hotel was clean, remodeled and rooms bigger than expected. It's not a big hotel not are the rooms big. Most who have travelled New York, San Francisco, Japan Etc will know up front rooms and space all around is smaller. Our room 204 was quiet and perfect for us. Elevator was the old style with the metal gate first and my kids got a kick out of it. There are stairs that are more narrow like... Read more

Lots of vintage character so lots of points for trying to keep that alive - the elevator and the stairs, the lobby all have that character. The rooms - we booked a king size to ensure enough room and the brass bed was large and comfy. Having character does not mean you have to miss out on modern amenities - the spa bath had broken nozzles, the bathroom shelf was broken and the towel rail had been attempted to be fixed but was still broken and left behind. The bath to shower nozzle didn't work ... Read more

My husband had surgery at St. Francis Memorial, which is very close. We did not need great luxury for this stay. The bed was comfortable. A few soft spots in the floor. The towels were stained. Plumbing & wiring all worked fine. We enjoyed the evening wine reception to meet other guests, although selections were from Gallo. The restaurant on lobby floor was excellent. Continental breakfast was okay. They served powdered coffee creamer : (

Not even close to good. The staff are not helpful or friendly. I chose this hotel for Wifi as we were traveling from a different country. The wifi was down more often then it was working. We were stuck in a city with no internet, so no uber, no way to get around & were directed to a supermarket to buy internet which was actually closed. The breakfast & wine closed early then advertised each day. Don't waste your money. Not a happy customer. If the staff were even a tiny bit helpful it would had ... Read more

We like older buildings. This one's had an idiosyncratic makeover, a modern rococo (think "hair salon on hallucinogens") that works unevenly. Some might find it quirky-hip, fun; others, tasteless-garish. Location is more "Tender Nob" than Nob Hill, fine if you don't like alpine climbs and want closer to downtown. Rate reflects non-premier location. With our "savings," we splurged on the "penthouse." Pluses: Coffeemaker; fridge; balcony door (opens to fire escape); see stars and city lights fro... Read more

This hotel had a great location in an interesting neighborhood and clean, comfortable rooms. It also had a nice continental breakfast and a wine and cheese happy hour every evening. No problems to speak of. But the reason for my very positive review was the staff's helpfulness. We launched a 8-day bike tour from the hotel. The only thing this place has going for it is it's location. If the owners would put anything back into it, it might be something. As is, it's obvious they're squeezing every last dime without putting anything into it. Nasty, dusty, cheap breakfast and happy hour wine. Awful.

We stayed here for three nights last month, and would not recommend this hotel to anyone. OK, so hotels in San Francisco are expensive- but you expect to get something that even resembles value for money, or remotely decent accommodation standards. The hotel is very run-down; shabby carpets and walls, random pieces of worn furniture, curtain holders protruding randomly from the walls (you have to navigate these carefully, if you want to avoid injury)- the list goes on and on. As for the so-calle... Read more

As soon as you walk in through the door the musty smell that greets you is consistent with the decor of the hotel. Gaudy bright pink chandelier in the lobby just about says it all until you use the lift which resembles something from the dark ages. The one saving grace was the large comfy bed amidst the dark depressing tatty decor and furniture.

Surrounding hotels are over twice the rate. Nice room. Well maintained hotel. Courteous staff. The antique elevator adds to the experience. This is a hotel that holds the earth quake era style and appearance while being modern, clean and convenient to the Knob Hill area. We recommend it frequently. The parking rate is less than if you park your own car in a local parking lot.

Don't be put off if your ride from the airport takes you via the Tenderloin district en-route to this hotel. The lobby is small and simple but with excellent staff who is accommodating and polite. I was amazed by its elevator, which is an old style manual door back in the 60's. The room is small, but enough for you to move around and park your luggage. Its complete with amenities and oh.. the bed, so soft and comfortable. We booked the "penthouse suite" for one night just for an overnight "getaway" in a room with a Jacuzzi tub. It was exactly what we needed and reasonably priced at less than $200 for the night on a Sunday night. The Jacuzzi tub was great. The room was clean. The room could use some paint and the outdoor area was not actually private, but otherwise no complaints. We ate in the restaurant and that was great as well. We would definitely stay here again.
