This French hotel is delightful with a good location near Union Square. We stayed in Room 309, very spacious and quiet. The staff was very considerate, especially Frank. We have stayed there several times and love the breakfast room.

In April my husband and I and two firends had the pleasure of spending two nites in San Francisco at the Cornell Hotel. Located on Bush between Mason and Powel is a perfect location just two blocks from Union Square. Our room was very small but just perfect as we only needed a place to sleep and shower. We were delighted with a lovely breakfast, included in the price of the room, in the restaurant located in the hotel, Jeanne D'Arc. Our friends room was larger and quite nice, but more expensive ... We chose the hotel mainly for its location in the city (a block from Union Square; 20 mins walk to Fisherman's Wharf; and near other places such as Chinatown, Embarcadero and SOMA). It definitely provided us the access it promised - in addition, most car rental companies have their city garage right across the street! The hotel also provided us with the charm and quaintness that makes a hotel standout. A century old building with an antiquated elevator that is reasonably well preserved is a go... Read more

Cornell is by far the most interesting hotel I've stayed. The music at the dinner room was lovely. I love the decorations. Breakfast is free, and I promise you this breakfast is something people would line up for by the door if it indeed is a brunch restaurant. The room is a bit small but considering in downtown SF, I think it is pretty nice. I do wish there were more outlets.

As my title suggests, I don't get it. This hotel is far more shabby than chic, needs a damn good painting and cleaning, and the room sizes are like postage stamps. If it's a model on French hotels, let me tell you they have advances in the hospitality industry in Paris since the 1970s. There are much better places to stay in SF in better condition with rooms two people can walk past each other in.

I loved the hotel! It is clean, comfortable, beautiful and cozy. The breakfast is very good, always served in the restaurant of the hotel, and usually you can choose between two options. All the staff members are very nice. I highly recommend!

Stayed at the Cornell Hotel de France for a quick overnight trip while visiting some friends in the Bay area. The hotel is in a FANTASTIC location-it is easily accessible from Powell Station (Muni and BART), and very comfortable rooms. From what we saw, the hotel is family-owned, and even the family dog greets you when you want into the hotel. We also ate dinner at the restaurant downstairs and were NOT disappointed, it was authentically French. This would be a great hotel for friends, couples, ... Read more

Lovely french themed hotel near Union Square. Staff is welcoming, pleasant, and efficient. Very nice common room up front with magazines and daily papers. Cute old-fashioned elevator. Good security. Rooms are small but comfortable and nicely appointed. No A/C but upper rooms catch the breeze and a fan is provided. Double windows (not double-paned, but actually two sets of windows!) block street sound very effectively! Convenient parking garage across the street. House Golden Retriever greets you... Read more

If you like boutique hotels, and want something out of the ordinary, this is definitely the hotel for you! Nestled along Bush street, so close to the Powell cable car line that you can hear the clanging of the bells, this hotel provides so much charm in a "chain hotel" dominated world. Don't get me wrong, I could have used or earned points at one of my frequent chain hotels, but this place caught my curiosity. Charming, cozy, with an old-fashioned elevator to boot! Great location for catching the Street Cars and 2 blocks from Union Square. This hotel is located in the heart of downtown San Francisco. The hotel is quite from the busyness going on outside. The rooms are small, but perfect for 2. An old times elevator is the mode of transportation, which is pretty need to see in action. You are provided with excellent breakfast choices.

Cornell Hotel is a hidden gem in San Francisco Union Square. Great value. Superb customer service at check-in and in the restaurant. Perfect location. Delicious breakfast included (not buffet - real ordered, sit down breakfast). Small inn with a fabulous breakfast included. We were in a Jr. Suite, which is 2 rooms, en suite bathroom (2 doors to bedroom and living room), and 2 TVs. In hindsight, I may have preferred a Queen room because it was a larger bedroom even though the suite was larger ove... Read more

I spent one night at this wonderful hotel, and wish I could have stayed longer. The location is perfect - walking distance to so many popular attractions. The hosts were gracious, and I heard from a friend who stayed there that the breakfast was amazing (I had to catch an early flight, so missed it this time). Value, location, and charm!

This is the most interesting boutique hotel I have stayed in in San Francisco and probably in the world. Besides being very clean, updated and close to everything the fantastic original art work throughout the hotel made for the best photo ops. The staff was friendly and very helpful. My husband and I come here in August to get away from the summer heat. This place is reasonable, and simple but comfortable, and the staff is lovely. If you're familiar with Union Square boutique lodging, you know what this is. The difference here is that the place is independently run. The restaurant downstairs is great for dinner, but the breakfast (included) just barely average, but generous. But the coffee is good! Very clean hotel with lots of character. Rooms are smaller (similar to many hotels I've stayed in in Europe) but very nice. Staff was friendly, a good hot breakfast was included, and the location is great - near union square and right off the powell-mason and powell-hyde cable car lines. Every hotel in San Francisco is expensive but this was a good value and the price was reasonable. Parking is right across the street which is nice.

Great location of this family run hotel, we stayed for two nights and it was the best value with the best reviews we could find. Decor a little old fashion for our tastes, but the quality, cleaniness of the room & service was great. Breakfast in the morning was good and the Chinese lady serving breakfast was beautiful and added to the charm of the morning. Loved her positive outgoing personality. Would recommend staying here if you want central location for San Francisco.

After reading amazing reviews of this hotel and given is rated #18 on this site we decided to give it a try. The hotel is located on a very busy street. Parking is provided across the street about half a block away. We were under the impression that parking was covered but found out there was an additional $27 per day we had to pay for. The hotel is quaint, especially the restaurant on the B level that is almost like part of a castle! The rooms are smaller, more like a European hotel. The bed is very comfortable as are the sheets. Towels are wonderfully thick and absorbent. Everything is clean. The staff was helpful and welcoming. We were on the fifth floor and it was quiet, even with the trolleys running below. This bed and breakfast really does feel like a small hotel in France, right down to the old fashioned elevator and real keys for the rooms. In spite of being very old, everything was super clean and well maintained. The bed was comfortable, and in general the room was well designed - there was a place for everything. I loved this French boutique hotel in the heart of downtown San Francisco. European-style elevator with see-through gate. Breakfast in their attractive cellar restaurant is included but is not a buffet. Waitresses bring you your order swiftly and efficiently. If you're accustomed to the American hotels, this will take some adjustment. If you have been to the quaint European hotels, then you'll be right at home. In fact, during my three day stay, I don't think I came across another American at breakfast. There were Germans, French, British and a few Scandinavians, I expect they felt comfortable with the old world charm of the hotel. We stayed in San Francisco for 4 days, we are from Spain. We really enjoyed Cornell de France. Employees were all really kind. Breakfast was good and location was perfect. Rooms are small but pretty nice. The only problem was parking. Hotel has no parking and you have to go in a third party company, which is really near but employees are so rude and unhelpful.
