The hotel is located in a very convenient location in downtown San Francisco. The lobby has a nice oldy type of vibe to it and it does look very nice. They offer coffee every morning until 10 am and tuesday and thursday from 5-6 is wine tasting. The rooms are small but enough because you arent going to be in the rooms for that long any way. The washroom is adequate. There is one restaurant but that is it. There is no offering for breakfast either in room or downstairs that is separate from the r... Read more

The hotel is located almost in the heart of San Francisco downtown. Thus ideally close to almost all the great dinning and shopping streets. You can pretty much walk to all the places or cycle. It is also close the cable car turn table at Powell and market street. The rooms are bit small but it has to be a given considering the age of the building. But that doesn't mean it is not kept properly. Far from it. The staff are friendly, the room clean, the bathroom tidy. All the marks of a nice hotel... Read more

The room had a stale foot odor smell that basically made me not want to walk around in my bare feet. Turning on the ventilation didn't help because then it turned into a "burning dust" smell. If my travel booking site hadn't paid the entire hotel stay upfront, I would have checked out. The climate control in the room was binary: You can have the heat on at super-hot temp or leave it off. Setting the thermostat to 72 degrees basically meant the room would heat well beyond 72degrees, but to be... Read more

The lobby in this hotel is small and dark and garishly painted. The rooms have curtains that make it look like a circus tent. The beds are very comfortable and there is a great shower. There is neither a coffee machine in the room or breakfast. There is coffee in the lobby. It is attached to Jaspers a restaurant with few non-meat choices. The neighborhood is on the edge of the mission area. Lots of homeless in the neighborhood and lots of liquor stores. I prefer more conveniences and more food ... Read more

Stayed here for 3 nights at the start of our USA coach tour. We were on the 3rd floor and the room was spacious, adequate hanging and drawer space for clothes. Bathroom at bit dated but clean and functional. Shower powerful. Bed comfortable. Fridge and safe in room. We had no additional fees to pay as they were included in tour costs. Good central position within walking distance of Union Square. As we had early rises each day we ate at the 24 hour diners in Mason Street - 5 min. walk. Alt... Read more

Good location...stayed for 4 nights. It is an older building, and traditional in style. Always thought, the States had massive double beds...not the case at this hotel! Staff, were really very helpful, which was lovely. Coffee available in the lobby every morning, also ice cold water....worth filling your water bottles! No kettles in the room....usual in the U.S.A. Staff were happy to supply, on request, a coffee machine. If you like your British tea, take a travel kettle! Hope this helps!

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights (Saturday to Tuesday). I had read a lot of reviews, so was prepared for what we got when we arrived. It is on the edge of the Tenderloin area, but honestly I didn't feel unsafe ever. Just a few more homeless people, but you are in a city (and the most expensive one at that) so what are ya gonna do! We arrived around 9pm on a Saturday and they were booked solid, I had booked with Priceline with a name your price deal and got it for $177. There is a $25 resort ... Read more

A nice hotel at union square. They gave me a free upgrade so that was great. They were very helpful and gave me a room around an hour and a half before the actual check in time. I was sitting in the lobby and ate something while finishing some of my work using their free wifi.

The rooms are small and I am sure the toilet so close to the sink is no longer legal. The bathroom is as large as a stall in a public rest room. The loaction is good in th theater district and close to union square. The lobby is very impressive. These renovated old hotels can have some great architecture. Rooms at this hotel range from under $200 to over $400 depending on what convention is in town. The hotel used to me a kimpton property so it's how do I say, interesting decor. I liked the kim... Relatively inexpensive hotel, comfy bed, clean bathroom. The carpet, walls, and curtains could have been fresher, but all in all, it was okay. When we were checking out, we found out there was a "hotel fee" of $25.00/day, plus tax! Priceline had included in the fine print of their contract that some hotels do include this, but we did not know it would happen or how much!! What a surprise to find out we owed the hotel an extra $85.00. I can understand when there is a resort fee--- beach chairs... Read more

We were looking for a 3.5 or 4 star hotel somewhere in downtown near Union Square. After looking for a couple of weeks, we found a great rate at the Serrano. Small room but typical for a city hotel. Super bathroom, comfortable king size bed and for a vintage hotel, it is incredibly quiet! Super staff, too! Easy walk to public transport and we never waited more than 4 minutes for an Uber! Great vacation!

I was perfectly happy with my room and with the service here, except that neither on check-in nor on check-out did anyone mention to me that I'd be charged an additional $28.50/day "Urban Fee" to cover their "Free" coffee. When I book online and pre-pay, I sort of assume that all my costs are covered (unless I choose incidentals like mini-bar), so it's a bit of a shock to see an extra $85 added to a three day stay when none of the staff bothered to mention it. I'm not saying don't stay here, but... Read more

We enjoyed staying at this hotel for two nights. Room was comfy and bathroom nice. Lobby was pretty and a nice place to sit down for a while. We stayed here for a long weekend and loved our room and experience, but we were charged an extra "urban fee" for each day we stayed on top of the regular rate per night. Other than that, nothing to complain about. Our room was on the tenth floor and had a great view of the city, and we received a $5 coupon at Jasper's for opting out of housekeeping service.

The Hotel Serrano is an older hotel decorated in old Italian décor. Big and bold. It still holds the charm with slightly smaller elevators, hallways and rooms... particularly the bathrooms. The room had a nice tv, wine glasses, nice soaps, and a fridge. The fridge, however, was filled with beer, juice, water, etc and each had a cost. In the rooms, there was a menu of everything from M&M's to popcorn, to cards... each with a cost. We didn't partake. The restaurant might have had good food, but ... Read more

Nice boutique hotel that feels rich with history. Built in 1926, you will not have all the modern frills. Nice rooms, functional, and central location. Nice place that I booked 2 days before arriving in SF. Staff were really cool and friendly while the hotel sits on the edge of the Tenderloin district which can not be a pleasant place at night since we were told it's filled with homeless junkies. Nice hotel. Clean. Attractive décor. The front desk staff were not very friendly or attentive. No one would pick up the phone. Also when my key card had deactivated I went to the front desk and was basically told it was my fault that the key did not work! Overall experience was fine. The location is central and the hotel was attractive but customer service has room for improvement.

We have stayed at this hotel 9 years ago and chose it based on previous visit. Chose for the convenience to shopping, restaurants and especially the parking next to it. Classic looking hotel with a young attitude. Clean rooms altough small but I'm used to travelling in Europe so... Had a great deal from an online reservation site and got a good deal even if it was during marathon weekend. Can't talk about the adjoining restaurant since I haven't tried it but there are plenty of good restaurants at less than a block away. Don't be turned off by the immediate surroundings, the bars and restaurant in the area are really nice.

Scalding water from hot/cold tap, no coffee pot in room, no room service. Bad coffee in the lobby is not a solution. Room was clean, hotel lobby was dark, dingy and worn, needs a little maintenance. I am confused about all of the comments that this is a good location, as I would disagree; was far from everywhere we wanted to be.

I'm sure someone would write up this stay/room as being "cozy". But we all know what that means. Hotel was responsive to my request to move and the second room was much more as expected, but there were just too many problems with the original assigned room and it colored the rest of my stay.

This hotel is in a great location, a couple of blocks from Union Square, but not into the Tenderloin. I had a decent room and bed. The hotel and room were reasonably quiet. The elevators were extremely small, but serviceable. There were very usable stairs in the main building, not relegated to "emergency" status--nice! The bathroom had an inclusion that made it impossible to stand directly in front of the mirror at the sink, likely related to the historical nature of the building. Staff was frie... Read more

This hotel was a good value in a centrally located part of San Francisco. My only comment to take note is the number of indigents/homeless in the area, but that's not the hotel's fault. I suggest not pulling out a map while on the streets as it serves to be a magnet to the homeless.

SF is generally too expensive so this hotel was no different. Add on charges were not disclosed in the on- line booking and adde $25 a day to the rate. Not ethical in my opinion. Old plumbing reflected in slow draining bathtub- water above my ankles during my shower. Location is convenient but "edgy".

Although quite old and a bit weathered in the lobby, the hotel is clean; they offer a great coffee selection in the lobby in the morning and the staff made us feel very welcomed. Location in poor area , very deprived and lots of beggers. Very expensive for a basic room . Staff were very helpful though . Room is basic but clean . Bar below is good . But beware ! The price you are given for room , add on about 40% more to the price as they have inordinate taxes which vary from other parts of California. This all adds up to a very expensive price for a very basic room in a poor location .

This could easily be a 4 star hotel if some attention to detail was paid. Housekeeping didn't even replenish my bar soap or lotion. Cheap. I was offered an upgrade online but when I checked in the hotel was full. What's the point of offering an upgrade if you can't provide it upon arrival?

I did not care for the high priced parking and the room did not have a coffee pot. Not enough pillows and no microwave. No space in fridge. But the bell man were very helpful. The hotel lobby was pretty nice.

Great location, liked the room, but couch is old and nasty. Mini bar was very convenient, staff helpful, Jasper's a good restaurant. Will consider staying here again if they replace the furniture. Room was good size.

While dated, this is in a nice location near, but not at Union Square. Walking to the Square was safe. The room was very large and the bathroom was outstanding. A minor plumbing issue occurred, but it was not enough to ruin the stay. Excellent staff!

Great hotel within walking distance to Union Square, China Town, North Beach, and Market Street shopping. Great value, super friendly and helpful staff. We've been staying here for 15 year's and even though it's changed ownership the staffs friendliness and helpfulness has remained the same. We do however miss the "Raid The Mini Bar" the "Park & Stay Package" and the "Happy Hour"

It was very crowded in downtown on Friday night and we couldn't park. Had to find street parking and move car at 5:30 am or spend 75 on parking for the night. Hotel was very nice and Carlos was great and he upgraded our room when someone cancelled. very nice room. great view. some rude staff in the early AM. I asked a couple questions and got grumpy responses. with the room upgrade and the good price i was very happy overall. need to park far away at times and take bus or Uber into downtown.

Wanted to spend a nice vacation with girlfriend but ending up paying more for staying here. 100$ for parking. My room was not clean and dirty, I didn't get upgraded instead I got a room with not that great of a view then my previous room had.

The staff was great, location was excellent...walking distance to pretty much everything...including shopping, union square, nightlife, etc. However, the rooms are very dated...the initial room we got was so dated, we had to asked to be moved to another....which the helpful staff immediately looked into. The second room was much better and cleaner.

The Sorreno has seen better days, but it was comfortable, the room was quiet (old thick walls) and the service was top notch! Yes, there are no coffee machines in the rooms, but when we asked for one, we were supplied with one without charge. The shower (room #1505) was great and the mattress excellent. Jasper's for lunch was also very good.... both food and service. Our room was small, but a similar sized room we won in an auction at the St. Regis in NYC normally goes for $950 a night. It ... So many places just don't care these days. There's still a level of personality and care here that I appreciate. Looking forward to coming again, for business or personal travel. The one low-point was the restaurant attached to the hotel. Very sports-bar that for one doesn't match the hotel and two, has absolutely pedestrian food. But, there are SO many places to eat in SF. So, it's not an issue. Just go wander.

Thank you very much! We were extremely thankful for the outstanding courtesy and service. We loved the suite on the 17th floor and all the beautiful views. The kids as well us, enjoyed the gym. All were clean and classy.

I stayed here 3 years ago and didn't realized it had changed ownership since my last stay. The front desk was only run by one person. I got minimal information at check in about service in the hotel, and there is no information in the room. I had to go back to the desk to ask for minibar key. The new owners have done minimal maintenance over the past 3 years. The furniture is worn, and wallcoverings are limp at the floor in the bathrooms. The staff I did meet was friendly and helpful. Old wall paper and old carpets affected my allergies a lot. Room was small but it was expected. Lots of drinks and snacks that were convinient in the room for an extra cost. Nice location! Can decline room service to get $5 to use at the restaurant down stairs!
