The hotel is great for its price. We took the cheapest room for the last 3 days of our 2-week roadtrip. It was very small with a window to the hotel corridors (+skylight), but very clean and cozy, ideal to leave our things, explore the city and come back to sleep. The bed was comfortable. Restrooms and showers are shared but they're very clean and private, I never waited more than 5min, and they definatly do not have "the hostel vibe". They're in the hotel classic style. The rooms are tiny, the bathroom's down the hall, and it's a delight. The San Remo is like some hotels I stayed in Italy. There are lots of antique furnishings and decorations, as well as personal comforts like a multi-lingual library. We stayed in a two-bed room without a sink, because the rooms with sinks are on the outside walls and are more noisy. It's a tiny room but the beds were comfortable (although the pillows could have been better). There are toilets, showers, and sinks in several ar... Read more

When my husband asked for an affordable hotel in San Francisco, in walking distance to the wharf, only a few came up. When I saw the picture of the San Remo Hotel with the old surf car in front, I knew that was the one. 'Vintage' would be the right word to describe this California gem. The only drawback would be the parking lot, which is a block or two away. We decided not to rent a car, since so many attractions were nearby, plus several tour offices for wine tours to Napa or Sonoma. We arrive... Read more

You share a bathroom. the rooms are tiny, but the character of the place is great - very friendly feel to it. People tend to leave their bedroom doors open when hanging out in their rooms which is friendly too. Good to have free tea and coffee on tap - would be good if it was available a bit earlier. There is cheapish parking available nearby. Staff v helpful

We really liked this place, simple, clean, hospitable for a place to hang your hat while visiting San Francisco! The staff was nice and helpful, lots of hot drinks and cold water and snacks for guests. The bed was very comfy, bathrooms always available and very clean. Cool history also, like you've gone back in time.

Great Location and super adorable hotel to stay in. There is a delicious restaurant just below that I would recommend and a good taco place just next to that. It was simple and clean. My boyfriend and I had a trip to San Francisco planned and were worried about finding a decent and affordable place to stay. We stumbled upon the San Remo Hotel online and had our doubts about the boarding house-style place advertised. We loved it. It's an extremely well-located, quirky, homey little place in the heart of North Beach. A stone's throw from Fisherman's Wharf and Little Italy, with friendly staff and comfortable rooms. Following three weeks travelling around the canyons and valleys of Arizona and Utah, we bunked down in the San Remo for three nights. There any many great touches that have been carefully added to enhance the experience at this hotel. Victorian period fittings and furniture everywhere (bathrooms and showers included). We got the penthouse for two of us and a triple for the other three. The penthouse has its own bathroom and a nice roof deck. Also has a tv, coffee maker, and fridge. Nice, but the weather was not really nice enough for us to enjoy the roof deck. The triple was very small for three people - we were tripping all over each other. No tv, coffee, or fridge. Stayed here on 4 day visit to SF in early June with wife and 11 yr old daughter. Found this on TripAdvisor and took a chance. It reminds me of a cross between a hotel and hostel, or perhaps a European hotel or B&B: small rooms, shared bathrooms/showers, "homey" feel, lower cost than typical hotels. Called before the trip to see if there was a provision for storing luggage before official check-in due to early arrival in the city: no problem! Arrived late am and were told to place our bags in... I won't go over all the details of my first review of this utterly delightful North Beach hotel, except to add that on previous visits we were unaware of the "Penthouse Suite." On this last trip to the city we gave it a try --- and I am even more in love with the San Remo Hotel than before. The Suite is a small, deliciously cozy little "Victorian" room for two, indeed perched on the roof of the building. The hotel is in a good location so that it's easy to get to the piers and tourist attractions with a short walk. The hotel was clean and organised but quite dark. There's free tea, coffee and biscuits in the foyer. Our room was on 1st floor and was very small ( enough room to get to either side of the bed but no more and the tiny window faced a wall so that there was virtually no natural light. The small window also meant that there was no fresh air, just the ( slightly loud ) fan.

Realize that the hotel was built in 1906, and for a one night stay, cannot complain. Especially for the price. Stayed at the hotel... Read more

. . . But I didn't realize they still had the original beds lol No joke-the mattress was horrible. Worst bed I've ever slept on in my life. We could see the big dip in the middle the moment we walked into the room. Soft and mushy, but crackles when you try to turn over. We had reserved a room with a full bed and a sink. We arrived about 11PM via Amtrak so had to call to be let in, as the doors to the hotel are locked between 10PM-8AM. We climbed the steps to the desk, only to be told our r... Read more

We stayed here for 4 nights in March 2016. We enjoyed the old world charm of this place and the location was great--an easy walk to Fisherman's Wharf and a streetcar stop at the end of the block. I was happy with the price we paid--other nearby hotels were twice as much. When we travel to explore a city, we are always on the go, and spend little time in the room. The room was clean and met our needs and I felt it was a good value. However, you should be prepared for a few things. There is ... Read more

Probably not for everyone given the shared bathroom situation, but it was perfect for my husband and my romantic weekend away! Very central to a lot of the attractions, we walked almost everywhere. And the Italian Restaurant at the bottom of the hotel was DELICIOUS!

Great place to stay - clean, quiet, conveniently located between the two cable car lines that get you downtown, walking distance to Wharf. Shared toilets and bathrooms are ok as there is many of them. Spent there a week and had to wait once for a shower. They have massage chair on every floor and i spend time there planning my next day. There is coffee and tea in the morning and some chocolate goodie. Loved it. The desk is closed overnight and since I arrived at around 3:30 am (and informed the... Read more

Not only location is very good and convenience but also hotel was very cute and comfortable. Bathroom was share but it was very clean and small thing was well made. Like where and how shelf was made in bathroom. Also shampoo was good one. You can get free coffee and tea, stuff was very friendly, wifi connection was great. I will stay here again when... Read more

Cute and reasonably priced hotels in a great location that's easily accessible/walkable to the Fishermans Wharf/Pier 39 area. It's also about a 10 minute walk to Lombard street and Coit Tower. It must be noted that a lot of the rooms are small (and it explains why in the brochure of information that you get in your room -'it's basically because it's an old Victorian building and they want to preserve the rooms/features). To be honest this wasn't a problem for us as we didn't spend much time in ... Read more

This is not a typical chain hotel, nor does it have in-suite bathrooms, which is why it is an affordable and a one-of-a-kind experience in one of the more expensive cities in the world. It's very clean and in a terrific location with a flavor of vintage San Francisco. The staff was very attentive, and the hall toilets and showers are immaculate and well thought out so that there is never a wait. We had a room with a view to Water Street which was very atmospheric and had an in-room sink. This is... Read more

It is very well located and the style is appealing. There was a very strange odor though and the room was very very claustrophobic... Couldn't even unpack properly. Is was clean and easily accessible.

This came as a recommendation from a friend. Situated in North Beach, about a 10 minute walk from Fisherman's Wharf. Well placed for trips to Alcatraz and the cable car and also convenient for other parts of the city if you like walking, which we do. Old fashioned style hotel with carpet and heavy wooden furniture. Small rooms- some with sinks, you pay more for that. Shared bathrooms and toilets- when first told there were only 6 showers for the whole hotel this seemed like a stretch- we were pl... Read more

I actually really like this hotel. It's very quaint. Built in 1906, with Victorian style furnishings. My room was just as quaint, clean, comfortable, small of course, with many Tony Bennett photos. I even don't mind the shared bathrooms/showers. The only negative I would say would be the bath towels (maybe use a little fabric softener). And I can't forget the loud, obnoxious people in other rooms, slamming doors, talking loudly, banging things around. All said though I would return.

Thank you for another lovely stay. I reviewed the hotel last year, will not go into great detail. The hotel has old world charm, its rooms are decorated with antiques throughout. There are modern amenities as well, such as, free Wifi. The bathrooms are shared, they are clean and readily available. The hotel is in a great location. We will see you next year!

Stayed 3 nights at the San Remo and found it great it is located in a quiet residential area so from our room heard hardly any traffic noise and it was hard to believe we were in a city. The rooms are small and we found it difficult to unpack but the hotel has so much charm and character it really does not matter. The shared bathroom facilities are no problem as they are spotlessly clean and located at 4 different locations around the hotel so we never had to wait, there are even rooms with baths... We stayed in San Remo for 1 night on our honeymoon tour of the West Coast. We chose to stay in San Remo because of it's location and quirky nature. The hotel itself is super cute. However, we were placed in room 11 (aka the booby price). We didn't get one wink of sleep. The bed must have been an original 1905 feature, it squeaked constantly. We closed the window that faced onto the hall/ reception area, to help reduce noise levels and turned on the fan to keep us cool. This didn't help. I now kn... Read more

Fun for a night or two but it is an old fashioned hotel in every sense of the word. It is charming and feels like you go back in time. You walk up a flight of stairs to get to the small check in desk. All the rooms are tiny and basic but cute and quaint. Shared bathrooms so bring a robe or PJ's. No room phones or tv but good wifi. It is a fun experience as long as you know what you are getting into.

I cannot say enough how much I loved my stay at the San Remo Hotel in San Francisco! I reserved the penthouse room for two nights during SF's Fleet Week and it was perfect. From the moment I made the reservation with the manager, Kenley, to the end of the stay everything was exceptional. Checking in with the front desk clerk Ari was a breeze. She was pleasant and very informative. She even took time and showed us up to the room. The rooftop penthouse and our private rooftop deck were ama... Read more

This hotel is very different to any other hotel I have stayed in. It has lots of quirky character and is definitely unique. Be aware the the rooms and beds are all quite old, but that's the whole point of the hotel. This probably isn't the place if you're looking for a luxury stay but I would definitely recommend it if you're after something a bit fun and different.

This was a great experience, the hotel has a lot of character and takes you to a different century. Great location, clean rooms, coffee and brownies in the morning. Rooms are small but cozy, the place feels a little like a dorm but it didn't bother are at all.

It was really interesting and unlike any other place I have ever stayed, the rooms were small but cosy with comfortable beds. The decor was great with framed photos all over the walls. Hard to explain how cool it is - from an past era but very cool. My wife is very particular (hates shared amenities), but she raved about the San Remo - the character, quaintness and small touches. Great location, good service, incredibly unique place to stay. Not expensive for San Francisco. There were four of us and we all LOVED IT!!! You've got to stay there

I travelled to San Francisco on an overnight trip a couple of weeks back, and the San Remo Hotel was perfect for my needs. The location was fantastic, just a short walk to the Fisherman's Wharf area and to the Big Bus tour buses, with supermarkets and pharmacies close by too. Fantastic location just a few blocks south of Fisherman's Wharf. This place has been in operation for over 100 years and it shows (in a good way). Lots of antique art and architecture hanging around. Excuse me while I'm still amazed by this hotel. Doesn't feels like a 2 star hotel at all. It's so clean, nice&friendly hosts, good service and I'm in awe by this place because of the interior. It feels like going back in time. The rooms are old fashioned and at the dorm/hall it looks like you're living in a old train with sleeping rooms. It's amazing. I really recommend this hotel because it's also close to lombard street, Trader Joe's and not far from pier.
