The hotel is great for its price. We took the cheapest room for the last 3 days of our 2-week roadtrip. It was very small with a window to the hotel corridors (+skylight), but very clean and cozy, ideal to leave our things, explore the city and come back to sleep. The bed was comfortable. Restrooms and showers are shared but they're very clean and private, I never waited more than 5min, and they definatly do not have "the hostel vibe". They're in the hotel classic style. The hotel has a lot of ... Read more

The rooms are tiny, the bathroom's down the hall, and it's a delight. The San Remo is like some hotels I stayed in Italy. There are lots of antique furnishings and decorations, as well as personal comforts like a multi-lingual library. We stayed in a two-bed room without a sink, because the rooms with sinks are on the outside walls and are more noisy. It's a tiny room but the beds were comfortable (although the pillows could have been better). There are toilets, showers, and sinks in several ar... Read more

When my husband asked for an affordable hotel in San Francisco, in walking distance to the wharf, only a few came up. When I saw the picture of the San Remo Hotel with the old surf car in front, I knew that was the one. 'Vintage' would be the right word to describe this California gem. The only drawback would be the parking lot, which is a block or two away. We decided not to rent a car, since so many attractions were nearby, plus several tour offices for wine tours to Napa or Sonoma. We arrive... Read more

You share a bathroom. the rooms are tiny, but the character of the place is great - very friendly feel to it. People tend to leave their bedroom doors open when hanging out in their rooms which is friendly too. Good to have free tea and coffee on tap - would be good if it was available a bit earlier. There is cheapish parking available nearby. Staff v helpful

We really liked this place, simple, clean, hospitable for a place to hang your hat while visiting San Francisco! The staff was nice and helpful, lots of hot drinks and cold water and snacks for guests. The bed was very comfy, bathrooms always available and very clean. Cool history also, like you've gone back in time.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 3 nights and found the hotel really nice. It's a little old fashioned and quirky, but was really nice and clean. The shared bathrooms & toilets were spotless every time we went to us them, which made us not mind sharing! This hotel is in the perfect location, fishermans warf/pier 39 is literally 5mins walk away! There are loads of restaurants and a few bars around there! Parking at the hotel is easy, you use a car park just down the street at a discounted pri... Read more

Great Location and super adorable hotel to stay in. There is a delicious restaurant just below that I would recommend and a good taco place just next to that. It was simple and clean. The staff was great. The wharf is easy waking distance to the hotel. I would stay here again if I return to San Francisco.

My boyfriend and I had a trip to San Francisco planned and were worried about finding a decent and affordable place to stay. We stumbled upon the San Remo Hotel online and had our doubts about the boarding house-style place advertised. We loved it. It's an extremely well-located, quirky, homey little place in the heart of North Beach. A stone's throw from Fisherman's Wharf and Little Italy, with friendly staff and comfortable rooms. The rooms are cleaned each day, and though you have to share ba... Read more

Following three weeks travelling around the canyons and valleys of Arizona and Utah, we bunked down in the San Remo for three nights. There any many great touches that have been carefully added to enhance the experience at this hotel. Victorian period fittings and furniture everywhere (bathrooms and showers included). It was my wife's first time to San Francisco and this was a highlight, for both of us. Share bathrooms and showers, small but very comfortable rooms, free wi-fi, coffee/tea and hot... Read more

We got the penthouse for two of us and a triple for the other three. The penthouse has its own bathroom and a nice roof deck. Also has a tv, coffee maker, and fridge. Nice, but the weather was not really nice enough for us to enjoy the roof deck. The triple was very small for three people - we were tripping all over each other. No tv, coffee, or fridge. The shared bathroom was clean but I would still recommend shower shoes unless you don't mind someone else's hair in the floor of your shower. My... Read more

Stayed here on 4 day visit to SF in early June with wife and 11 yr old daughter. Found this on TripAdvisor and took a chance. It reminds me of a cross between a hotel and hostel, or perhaps a European hotel or B&B: small rooms, shared bathrooms/showers, "homey" feel, lower cost than typical hotels. Called before the trip to see if there was a provision for storing luggage before official check-in due to early arrival in the city: no problem! Arrived late am and were told to place our bags in... I won't go over all the details of my first review of this utterly delightful North Beach hotel, except to add that on previous visits we were unaware of the "Penthouse Suite." On this last trip to the city we gave it a try --- and I am even more in love with the San Remo Hotel than before. The Suite is a small, deliciously cozy little "Victorian" room for two, indeed perched on the roof of the building. Access is gained via stairs that were not even apparent to us from our previous stays, ... Read more

LOVED IT !!! - this is by far the most unique and charming hotel I've ever stayed at. Beautifully decorated, antique and vintage furniture, great art work. I really felt like I went back in time. Hotel is 110 years old with a 130 year-old Italian restaurant on the ground floor. I felt like I was staying at a warm-hearted relatives home. Excellent customer service. Special shout-out to Kenlin (sp?) who was exceptionally friendly, helpful and fun to talk to. I can't wait to return to San Francisco... Read more

Situated near to the fishermans wharf are this hotel dates back to the early 1900's and us popular to all nationalities alike it's entry is via a flight of steps that can be challenging. The reception area is quite small but has character. The Rooms are quite small and some are another flight of stairs up. The only downside is that you have to share a bathroom with other visitors. Not that we spent much time in our hotel room, but the San Remo was one of the few hotels of any price where I actually enjoyed just hanging out. Between the eclectic decor, massage chairs, library, refreshments, friendly staff, and even the mouthwash dispensers in the wash room, this was a great place to recharge for a while before heading out for our next exploration. Perhaps not for everyone, but I loved meeting other guests in the hallways and lobby area - they all had that look like we were... Read more

This wee hotel is amazing. Awesome location, only 2 blocks from Fishermans wharf. Lots of character here. The rooms are small but the beds really comfortable, the showers and toilets are communal but kept clean and are on each floor. There is coffee, tea and water available all day with brownies in the morning and candy all day. The staff are friendly and helpful and all in all is great value for your money. We would happily stay here again for sure.

Perfect location . Close to many touristy sights. Quiet . Clean. Rooms are a bit tight, was hard to open suitcases in our 2 bed room. Would be nice to have attached rooms. Not air conditioned , and some windows did not have screens. Better for couples than families. Complimentary water coffee and tea nice touch. Plenty of clean towels .

The hotel is in a good location so that it's easy to get to the piers and tourist attractions with a short walk. The hotel was clean and organised but quite dark. There's free tea, coffee and biscuits in the foyer. Our room was on 1st floor and was very small ( enough room to get to either side of the bed but no more and the tiny window faced a wall so that there was virtually no natural light. The small window also meant that there was no fresh air, just the ( slightly loud ) fan.

Nice location and easy to find in North Beach, SF. Lots of stairs to get to reception/rooms so could be tricky for some. Inside is a dated (but in a somewhat appealing way) interior with old carpeted floors and rooms coming off a corridor. Reception staff pleasant and check in/out painless. The room was only just larger than the bed so difficult with a big suitcase. The San Remo is not your typical hotel. Old, small rooms, shared bathrooms, no elevators. But it is actually a great place to stay. Very nice helpful staff. The cleaning people keep it spotless and look after guest rooms as if it were a much more upscale place. And lots of other nice touches -- coffee and a selection of teas offered through the day -- several little reading alcoves -- a handy laundry room. Sam Remo was really quaint and cute - it's in a great location right near the pier, which in turn will get you on the cable cars pretty much all around the city. The shared bathrooms were impeccably clean and we never had to wait for a shower. The only thing that was a bummer was the noise. Because it's an older place, it squeaks and creaks and the walls are paper thin. They ask for quiet between certain hours but of course there are always people coming and going so it's hard to get a good slee... Read more

I stayed in this hotel with my wife as part of our road trip in the west coast. The rooms are pretty small but cozy and the showers and bathrooms are clean enough most of the time. The location is pretty good, as it's closed by the pier 39 and a cable car stop. Highly favored by Europeans and Bohemians. The vintage cars you see out front on Mason Street are part of a collection by the owner that goes back 100 years. Bonus: The ground floor of the hotel is occupied by Fior d' Italia restaurant and bar -- in business since 1886!

The location is good, the rooms are really tiny, the staff are friendly, the shared bathrooms are mostly very clean and you really can't beat the price for San Francisco - a city we found to be the most expensive city we've visited (certainly more costly than New York). The Italian restaurant downstairs is worth a try.

First are the warnings for those who may be used to US-style hotels: the rooms are tiny. Bathrooms and toilets are shared. No elevator. Now the review: the hotel is 5 minutes WALK from the waterfront and 6-7 mins from Pier 39. Sheraton is 2 blocks away, so that tells you the location cannot get better. Trader Joe's, Safeway and several restaurants are 2 blocks away as well; that is before you get to the Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 with tons and tons of food places. The decor is super cute!... I LOVED this little hotel. It's absolutely adorable. Everything is located on the second and third floors of the building; you enter by buzzing the front desk upstairs or using your key. The rooms are quite tiny; ours was maybe 8 ft x 12 ft, but they still fit a bed, wardrobe, and bedside table inside. (There wasn't much floor space after that.) Bathrooms are shared. There are several stalls on each floor with toilets (the old-fashioned gravity-flushing kind!) and showers, and there is a shared ... Read more

We spent two nights in downtown San Francisco in this quirky old hotel. Built after the 1906 fire, it has definitely been updated but retains its old world charm. A couple blocks from Fisherman's Wharf and the Powell St. trolley stop, it's quite convenient. It is NOT your average, cookie-cutter hotel. The San Remo Hotel oozes charm. The rooms are very small, some have sinks and some don't.
