Stayed here for a wedding and enjoyed it very much. Certainly had a retro feel to it, including the furnishing. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The pool is adequate and the wedding party enjoyed the swim. Catering by the hotel for the reception was excellent, with a variety of adages, chicken, salmon and hamburgers. The location is iffy at night but knew that ahead of time.

My daughter lives 2 blocks away and there is no room for me. I would stay here even though. Easy street address, good food and drink in the neighborhood. Courtyard can get noisy at night but full disclosure about quiet times.

We had a nice stay at the Phoenix Hotel (recommended by a friend living in SF!). Actually I have no bad things to say about this hotel. The design, that its very clean, friendly environment, the heated up pool, the room - all are good things. The neighbourhood can get a bit rough at nights because of the many homeless people on the streets (but thats for almost all of SF I think). We had some bad luck staying in the room next to a couple that was breaking up (until 3am) screaming and being very ... Read more

Love the Phoenix! Stayed here for a few nights and the staff made us feel like we were rockstars, couldn't have been happier with the hotel. The pool is great and having Chambers right there is super convenient, great food and an excellent brunch.

Stayed for 3 nights at the Phoenix, over a weekend. We found the staff were great in giving suggestions and check-in was really quick and easy. The Saturday we were staying there was a hotel party - if that's your thing then you'll love this hotel. With the louvred windows, we found that noise really travelled terribly and the room doors slammed constantly at night and in the morning. They supply earplugs though! It's a renovated 50's motel, and the rooms are comfortable but basic. Clean thou... Read more

This place is straight out of the 50's. Free parking is a huge plus. Rooms were clean, but no frills . You have to remember that this is refurbished from the 50's, so there are none of the amenities you are accustom to from today's maga hotels. The streets around the hotel are packed with homeless people. Make sure you go to Brenda's Cafe around the corner for breakfast!

I was looking for a city hotel with outdoor space and hopefully a pool. There are very few hotels that fit the bill in San Francisco. I checked out the website and was pleasantly surprised to find the Phoenix appeared to have everything I was looking for. I decided to take the Bart into the city and walk the five blocks from Powell Station to the hotel. My walk involved avoiding, drunks, street arguments and the general detritus of mankind; most of whom left a lingering smell, long after they h... Read more

I have stayed in several "schwanky" (read $$$$) hotels in SF, and have definitely enjoyed them for various reasons, but I decided to try The Phoenix for a quickie 2-night stopover while driving up to Oregon. I loved the idea of a retro motor lodge complete with swimming pool and free off-street parking! Although the hotel is in the Tenderloin (notoriously sketchy) part of town, I have to say, we kind of fell in love with the place! Great Bahn Mi sandwiches across the street, quick Uber rides w... The Phoenix Hotel was our last stop at our trip before flying home. We had been at Tenderloin before so we knew what to expect from the neighborhood. I have to say this was the most memorable place from our trip: it had a such a unique vibe which cannot be explained - you just have to go and see it for yourself. When we arrived there was this huge pool party going on at the hotel and we couldn't find a parking spot. My boyfriend stayed behind the wheel and I hopped off to check from the recept... Read more

If you're looking for a Chateau Marmont'ish experience in a hip SF motor lodge in the tenderloin - this is raw, it's real, it's for you! Really great hotel Front Desk Manager - super cool and a fixture at the hotel and contributor to the hip vibe.

The Phoenix is a memorable hotel, well mantained, interesting, cool, with a great pool, nice staff but neighborhood. Stayed with my family and once you are in the hotel no complaints. You just need to work out the surroundings at night and you will be ok. Its a safe location, dont get me wrong, we just expected something else for the rate. Nevertheless, all around its a good hotel to stay in SF. Cheers!

Our room was decorated adorably, comfortable and spacious though the bathroom was small and did not get the same rehab attention as the rest of the property. The pool was awesome - 80 degrees felt like a comforting bath on cool city mornings/evenings. It did need to be skimmed. Coffee and pastries in the morning were a nice touch but staff was so slow to refill. Check-in and out was great and felt the staff enjoyed their jobs/cared about my experience. Hello, I was on a work trip in SF and wanted a cool place that was trendy and well located but could also park a tall work vehicle. Let's say that my choices were not abundant! A colleague and I arrived at the Phoenix Hotel and were a bit disappointed from the outside look. We were not expecting a Motel look and were curious. Once you're inside, the mindset changes completely! The yard with the pool and the whole setup is very cozy and laidback. The vibe was amazing! The rooms are in very go... Read more

I was actually on a business trip this time and I was booked in Marriot Hotel. I asked my company to move me to Phoenix to enjoy some Californian spirit and the pool after work hours. Thank you awesome people of Phoenix that you have welcomed me and helped me all these 8 days! see you soon on my next trip in SF Alex

I stayed here when I came to San Francisco on a work trip because it was on our travel planner website, had good reviews here on TripAdvisor, had free parking and seemed to be in a convenient location. I'm just going to write out a Pro/Con list based on my experience. Pros: - The rooms are great! Very nicely renovated with comfortable beds and all the essential amenities (minus a fridge I guess). - Cool, hip vibe - the hotel hosts many events and seems to attract locals and tourists alike. -... I had a great overnight stay here. Totally hip, poolside rooms, delicious restaurant and cocktails. Great location if you like seeing live music and hitting the bars. Wish it was cheaper, but if wishes were fishes... Given the cost of lodging in this area it is in fact a very good value. It is located on the outskirts of the Tenderloin neighborhood. So if you haven't lived in a city before you might feel a bit on edge walking in some directions from the hotel. But I, and many friends, liv... Read more

Nothing is too much trouble it seems for the desk staff at this hotel. Warm, genial, thoughtful and overall interesting people who you would like to meet and talk to. They remember your first name every time you walk through the reception door. The hotel is throwback to the heyday of motor lodging but it is almost in the centre of SF. Awesome experience! We arrived in San Francisco in the early morning to attend a concert that night. We went to the hotel in the morning and they were able to store our bags for us. Joe at the front desk said that he would do his best to get us into a room early. He took down my phone number and said he would contact us. I got a call before noon that our room was ready which was greatly appreciated. The area around the hotel may look a little sketchy to some, which is typical of San Francisco in... Read more

So, a bit of a mixed time here. Nice hotel, rooms are fine, having a pool is great and on-site parking. Staff generally friendly and helpful. But. We arrived on a pool party night. Place is packed with hipsters (bearded and unbearded) drinking and dancing. They have hired rooms for the night for them and their friends to stay in once the party has ended. Sure enough, after the official party has stopped and the clear up begins, the mini-parties continue in the rooms. All night. My wife, incensed... Read more

To save a bit of money and stay someplace a bit funky for a work trip, I stayed here with a coworker. The front desk staff was extremely friendly and helpful (with tips around the hotel for places to eat). Keep in mind when you arrive is that it's an old motel that was refurbished and "hipsterized". The Hotel is might not in the best area but the great arrival at the reception makes you feel like home. The polite receptionists will be there for you 24/7 if you have questions to get somehow. Also you can find a good restaurant right next to the hotel with a small but delicious menu. If you prefer a short foot walk you will get everywhere and if not just use the app uber or a taxi to get everywhere. The rooms are nice, safe and clean.

The rooms were spacious for San Fran and being open to the pool area and only on 2 floors gave a sense of inclusion. Orlando from the front desk was amazing. Not only was he super friendly but also very helpful with tips as to where to eat and drink. I would certainly stay there again. Only negative was there was no fridge in the rooms which is strange as they encourage you to have drinks around the pool etc but the bar is not open much during the day and closed a couple of days a week.

I had a quick in-and-out visit to SF and decided to try the Phoenix Hotel and what a good surprise it was! It was a wonderful stay, just too short! Great location...I could walk anywhere with plenty of great places to eat and just a short jaunt downtown. And, Chambers, right next door was an excellent choice for happy hour and dinner. If you want a really nice swim, the pool is great! Great room, very clean and quiet!
