Hotel is nice and clean. Pros: location is amazing and it's a bit quirky, lovely concierge staff Cons: very loud, no air con and no breakfast. Every reception staff we spoke to seemed grumpy and didn't seem helpful They offer wine in the evening but it's slightly annoying if you don't drink wine, some alternative drinks would be nice

Business trip on the west coast. Central located. The characteristic railway in front of the hotel and the biggest mall as Macy and Norstrom are just right the corner. Half hour walking from pier 39 is a nice boutique hotel. No mini bar is a poor detail and the A/C works so/so. Clean. Small wardrobe and with a big luggage for a two weeks trip isn't good. Comfortable bed. Old style bathroom with bathtub and plastic curtain.

Nice hotel located close to Union Square on Powel street. It is a cute boutique hotel, nice, large room with a nice little terrace, even though the room was too hot and the air conditioning was not really working. I think I will stay again in this nice hotel next time

The location is excellent! You can't ask for better if you want to explore in many different directions but want to keep it in a central location. The beds were really comfortable!!! I didn't want to get up and leave for my flight! Also, the quality of the in room amenities was surprisingly good. I rarely sing praises about the quality of the soaps/shampoos/etc but I was pleasantly surprised. The staff was great, the decor was comfortable and modern dispite the age of the building (which we love... Read more

We stayed here on Memorial Day 2016. Booked the cheapest room they had to offer. The room was clean and tidy. Housekeeping was prompt. Room did not have any vents or windows. One small 500ml water bottle per night for a double occupancy room just didn't make any sense though. Very good stay for the price near Union Square. No major complaints. They charge you for the prime location the hotel is located at. It is less than 2 blocks from Union Square.

The hotel was in central location of union square. We requested a room on top floor with a view and we were given it which was great. The room was small but clean and had a hairdryer (better power than my own so if travelling from uk don't bother taking your own as it won't be as effective) there was also iron and ironing board. The bathroom was really clean too. We didn't spend much time there in general so it was ideal for what we needed. The hotel has a happy hour between 5-6pm where yo... Read more

I cant fault the staff, they were great. The location is very central. It is a boutique hotel. It has a lot of character and charm, although it does not offer all of the services that a major hotel does. My only word of caution is the vast range of the quality of the rooms. The first room I was offered had no air conditioning, a window that let in little light and was very cramped. It made me feel claustrophobic. It was not worth the $250 per night. The concierge helped my family book an amazing city tour on the spot for the same day. He also told us how to use the cable car. The front desk saw I had kids and helped us upgrade to the junior suite. The staff are very friendly and the room was amazing. The location is perfect, it is right by the cable car stop, BART station, and stores. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

Good location for the budget minded traveler walking distance to lots of shopping and places to eat and drink. Staff were helpful and the self serve wine happy hour every night was enjoyable. Pay the upgrade for a premium room most of the bad reviews online are for the inside urban rooms without windows. This is an older building we could hear the TV in the room next door and some of the finishing is getting tired.

The facility fee is ridiculous in addition to the cost of the hotel. The floor in my bathroom was crumbling under the tile. And the man at the front desk was inept. A very noisy hotel with nothing but beds+showers. The rooms are barely a bed and shower, with almost no room to move around, and the walls are very thin, so you can hear everyone moving around nearby. The elevator bell was very loud and resonated through the room constantly. If you stay here, prepare to go out for anything to eat and take earplugs - you're going to need them.

The only positive I have to say about this hotel is its location. Everything else was distinctly average at best. The bathroom was very old, outdated and grubby. They inform you on arrival you have to pay $15 dollars a night and for this all I can see you get is a small bottle of water and access to a free glass of wine. The service is unbelievably bad - the attitude of the front desk was amazingly bad! Really if you can go anywhere else I think it must be better.

For our first time in San Francisco we stayed here 3 nights in June 2016. The price was good and we LOVED the location. Rueben, the concierge, was extremely helpful. He's a treasure that the hotel never wants to lose. Our room had an air conditioner that cooled the room on the unusual hot evenings. I really wanted to like the Hotel Union Square when I made the booking. I travel to San Francisco several times a year for work and Union Square is my preferred area to stay in. With gusto, I booked the room through Hotels.com for the rate of $156.50 for two nights, including tax. (There was a facilities fee of $15 a night, which covered water in the room, wifi and a... While I might have checked in at the end of shift of the front desk staff, one of the front desk staff was more interested in flirting with tow hotel desks and going down to the basement floor to get them a bottle of water. While offputting, it was my room that made decide not to even stay the night. When I got the room, the room temperature was well over 80 degrees and what's more, the air conditioning unit did not work. There was dried urine on the bathroom toilet and floor. I went down to ... Yes the location is in the heart of the tourist section and 2 minutes walk from Bart - BUT! After checking in - the lobby is cute - we went to my upgraded room. Stepping off the elevator we were slammed with the "old & musty" smell. The view from the room was depressing. The color scheme was depressing. Room was definitely not like how it is pictured on website. Bed was hard. The air conditioner did not work well. Shower had mildew in it and the water pressure was super low. Only good is the staff is very nice.

The lobby was busy with check-in. There is one elevator which we had to wait for several trips before it was free to use. The whole hotel had a nasty smell like it was an old person home. Rooms were small and it felt like a old boarding house had been converted to a cheap hotel.

I found my stay at the Hotel Union Square to be great! The hotel is in a great, central location and I was surprised by how quiet it was. The rooms and bathrooms are on the small side, but they are clean and comfortable. I thought the decor was very interesting and different from what you usually see at most hotels. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and there were no issues at all!

This hotel is right in the heart of San Francisco and our room on the 3rd floor overlooked Powell street where the Cable Cars run. The room was small with a double bed, 1 chair,1 chest of drawers, flat screen TV, phone (wasn't working) overhead fan & a small bathroom (not at all what we were expecting). We tried to move but there were no other available rooms. At night the noise coming from outside was loud the cable cars run from 6.00am to 12.00pm then around 4.00am the delivery vans arrive acr... We found this hotel to be most acceptable. The room was clean and the décor was fine and we had a decent view from the bedroom window. The room was well cleaned each morning and the concierge (Joules) was very knowledgeable and friendly. There was a happy hour each evening and with free wine (In fact the cost is included it the $15 daily rate for services) but this is still good value for money and music was played by Paul which was most enjoyable. Highly recommend this activity! I would recomm... Read more

The hotel is an older boutique hotel very clean and great location. The staff was amazing and made the whole stay enjoyable. I was alone in the middle of the city and felt comfortable at all times because of the care and confidence the staff portrayed.

My room was first room was unacceptable due to size, location and quality. Relocated to another room with a view which gave a better feel but room was incredibly small. Very disappointed in the lack of onsite beverages / food and honestly did not feel completely safe with the location.

We waited to the last minute to book, but were pleasantly rewarded. As the name implies, it is in Union Square and is a perfect location. Considering hotel prices in SF this wasn't a break your bank stay. The room was small but nicely appointed with all the up to date conveniences when would need. There were plenty of electrical outlets, nice bedside lighting and a great rainfall shower head. Every evening they at 5:00pm they have some wine for an hour. We found the staff to be pleasant and atte... Read more

Everything was good, the location is excellent. The only problem we had is that we arrived really late by night and couldn't find a parking lot open. However, we finally found one not too far from the hotel, it just took us a long time to find it.

We really liked this hotel and have stayed here several times. On our recent stay we discovered the decor was "updated" - we're disappointed that the previous decor which in our opinion mirrored the character of this facility has been replaced with a modern look/feel. Obviously it's our opinion - I'm sure others will find it very welcoming! All that aside, I'm a business travel and find it very surprising (and disappointing) that a business center is not offered. Not sure i have stayed in an... Read more

The Kids suite is great, but it's on a very busy and noisy corner. I was awakened 3:00 am to 5:30 am from street noise (trucks, bongos and singing). The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Hotel is walking distance to many stores and restaurants.

The hotel is a good value and is located in a good location for groups. While we belong to a loyalty program for a major hotel chain, the Union Square Hotel was great for our gathering. Great staff! So helpful!

I loved how affordable this hotel was and the location. Such a great value for what you get. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The staff were very friendly. There is also a 24 hour Walgreens right across the street, which I found very convenient. It is also walking distance to Market St. and great shopping.

Loved the place. I'm not in to large rooms or stuff in the hotel that takes away from the location as maybe I'm biased. The room was clean and the location ideal for being in the heart of it all. Right next to the BART system station which made it great from the airport so I didn't need a car. Nightly live music in the lobby and a wine hour. Harvey at the front desk was very helpful as was everyone else. I would definitely recommend The Hotel Union Square for the location, rooms and staff. One w... Read more

The hotel is very confusing with lots of stairs. Windows do not isolate noises and you can hear many noises during the night. I slept badly every night, did not want to pay for the fee services, but they said that it was not optional.

One of the oldest hotels in San Francisco but one with charm and very clean. Small, but all the amenities you need. SUPERIOR LOCATION. Right near cable cars, shopping, and good dining options. Our room had a very comfortable bed, and a great overall feel with its exposed brick walls and decent bathroom. It's not big, but enough room for a couple to spend a few nights in.

We spent 4 nights at the hotel. It is perfectly located in saf Francisco's center. We got 2 rooms, ours was very large and although we didn't ask for it accessible for disabled. This ment a shower room almost as big as the bedroom. There was a window but it opened to an interior court so very dark. One of the main issues was that the room was smelly probably because of the floor carpet. When I complained about it the response was to give me an air spray that I used a few times every day. Overall nice and gets the job done. The smaller rooms feels old and a little rustic, and might be too small if you have 2 suitcases. But I guess the location makes up for that, being in the center of town and a minute walk from the rail train, mall, food and even local movie theater.

Great location but we were shocked to find they charge a mandatory extra $15 plus tax DAILY for internet use! Would be different if it was a luxury hotel. We didn't even use their Internet but were charged. Make sure you get an outside room as many rooms are dark facing into the air shaft. The front desk staff we're lovely. It's right on Powell so a bit noisy.

Fantastic location!!! Placement of items in room were not functional (had to find a place to plug in coffee pot). Bathroom shelves and toilet paper holder were tipping and grommets coming out from the walls. My bathroom items fell from shelf onto floor. And the ac/heater is extremely loud. Yes, they do offer ear plugs (paper listed the availability of free ear plugs on the night stand). But, can't beat the location!
