"I must concur with other reviews: the hotel was fine, though rooms were a touch small. But the neighborhood was terrible. Constantly harassed by people begging for money (not just occasional, fairly constant while in the area); people shouting at each other on the street; at least one assault happened on the street while I was staying here (though not to a hotel guest, and unsure the motivation behind it, probably just a random street fight). The staff is very friendly, though, and eager to please. The rooms, even though small, are comfortable. If they could move the entire building to a better neighborhood, my review would be higher, and the likelihood of my using the hotel again would be greater. As it stands, I have no intention to return."

"A great little boutique hotel, two blocks to Union Square and conveniently located a block from transportation BART, MUNI, F-line. This was our second stay at Hotel Metropolis this year, and will likely remain our go-to hotel of choice in SF. Great staff!"

"The walls are paper thin. We had a room full of folks a couple of rooms down from ours whose noise kept us up late into the night. And when we were using the free WiFi in the Library, we could of sworn that one of the homeless folks came in to the area and sat and watched us closely until we left. So, if the destitute folks don't make you feel out of your element, then this is a bargain!"

"The Hotel had not received the booking information when we arrived. However, the management was courteous and helpful in locating the reservation. Soon we were checked into our room. The room was clean, well appointed. Centrally located and convenient, I could recommend The Metropolis for anyone staying in San Francisco."

"Great location next to the Powell St. BART station and other public transport. Walking distance to Westfield Shopping Centre, Union Square and China Town, though you do have to brave up walking past so many homeless people. The room was very small but suited the needs of one person. At night, it can be very noisy, doors banging in the corridor or people shouting on the street below. Overall, the staff were friendly and helpful."

"We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights at the end of November. The room was very very small, but it was fairly clean (the bath tub had some hairs in it). The problem was with the location. It was located very close to down town, but the front door faced onto the worst street we saw in the whole city. The hotel parking was expensive ($30 tax per night) so we parked in a public lot one block away. Although the hotel was fine, I would NEVER stay there again because of the street. I felt scared every time I left or returned to the hotel, even though I was never alone. And they charged us for the bottled water in the room, whichI found outrageous and have never been charged for before. I would recommend not staying in downtown, but staying in the North Beach area and catching the tram into downtown. What ever you do, DO NOT stay on Turk Street."

"Very good prices, the room was clean and very nice for the price. Like everyone says and like I knew ahead of time, it is located in a sketch neighborhood. Streets are full of homeless people. Either way I never had an interaction with any of the bums, they kept to themselves. Staff was good at check in. Overnight staff was rude and not much help. Asked for a cab and he was rude to us about it and then the cab never came. We ended up running out in the rain and flagging one down ourselves. Overall its a good place to stay if you want to be near bars/clubs/restaurants in the downtown area. Good rates but bad neighborhood and bad customer service from the single night auditor. He was very uninterested in helping us! On the plus side we arrived two hours early before check in and they had our room ready! THANKS!"

"At first, the locations of the hotel seemed a little suspicious, but as we entered, we were a bit more comfortable. We loved the hotel. It was very modern and the room was a good size. The bed was one of the most comfortable ones I've ever slept in. The bathrooms are tiny, but didn't bother us. Customer service was wonderful. Their staff were always smiling and very helpful in answering our questions and even recommending what transportation and places to eat. We would definitely stay there again. It's close to all major shopping and we felt safe even walking around at night, more so then in the daytime."

"I found that some of the reviews concerning the hotel was false as a first timer to San Francisco, I didn't find this out of the ordinary for a large city. We have the same problem at home.nThe entire staff at the hotel was very helpful in determining directions and locations of sites to visit. They, especially Ray, was very helpful in this area.nI would highly recommend this hotel to any of my friends and anyone that reads this posting. Convient to everything. Use public transportation when possible, it will get you anywhere you would like to go."

"I checked in, went to my room and within 2 minutes I saw several sketchy scenes go down from my window. Within 10 minutes there were 8 marked and unmarked police cars all over the street under my window. I am from Los Angeles so at first I thought they were filming until I realized that there were no cameras! Anyway, I watched that whole show til the end! I didn't see them apprehend anybody! Much much later that night, between the almost hourly sirens blaring, I heard what I thought was 2 people having a loud heated argument, but when I looked out the window, it was only one guy arguing with himself using 2 voices. I guess that was the late night show. The next day there were 3 guys screaming at each other for about 20 minutes at 2 in the morning and around 4 am a questionable 'lady' was picking up and throwing bottles at people, and yes--there were people out that late/early. The dregs of society! It's unfortunate that such a decent hotel is on such an unsavory street. If you are faint of heart, don't stay there. If you want an uninterupted night of sleep, don't stay there. If you have children that you love, defintely don't stay there! if you are a thrill seeker, give it a shot!"

" the room was A LOT smaller than expected, and the staff were not very friendly nor helpful. i was placed on the 4th floor, and when i asked for something higher, they just denied me flatly. when we called the front desk to call us a taxi, they said they would however, when we came down, they told us to just walk over to park 55--like we know where that is- walking over to park 55 includes walking through a not so safe area, which is not fun when you're dressed all nice for a night out. the valet parking people are just straight up rude. i would say the best part of the hotel is the bed. SO COMFY, but for 142 a night, i think i should've spent a little more for a much better experience."

"The window in our room was a single pane of glass that practically made the night sounds and hourly sirens seem like they were next to the bed. The bathroom light was on a timer so that if you happen to like a reasonably long, hot shower (not that you can have that, either, given the fact that if your neighbor decides to either shower or flush the toilet while you're in there, it's not happening), you'll find yourself showering in the dark. I very much enjoyed the excitement of walking out of the tub, soaking wet, and reaching for the light switch--the one right next to the outlet. The single elevator broke down one of the days we were there, and the water was shut off another. All of this on top of the fact that their largest room is the size of a closet. The actual closet, in fact, was so small that we used it for our dirty clothes, since there was no dresser; we kept our clothes in our suitcases the entire week we were there.
Of course, after a week, with two days left of our time in San Francisco, we couldn't take it anymore and paid a few hundred dollars more to stay somewhere else. It was a lot more expensive, but then, you can't put a price on feeling like your stay in San Francisco could end at any moment just walking back to your hotel at night.
It's dirt cheap and only a two-minute walk to Union Square, but unless your vacation plans include trying to stay alive and staying up half of every night worried about whether or not you're going to get home in one piece, you DO NOT want to stay at the Hotel Metropolis."

"I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel. They were very friendly and accommodating.
I totally liked the decor and vibe of the place. Totally fit SF's artistic style. This was my first time at Metropolis and Id consider coming back to them. I usually stay at other hotels that are a bit more pricy but metropolis turned out to be a great choice. My room was very clean, bathrooms were spotless and had plenty of towels.
The location is ideal. Smack center of all the action. 1 block from union. Bart, trolly, bus, trams are right outside. 1 mile from the ferry building, 1 mile from all the museums and 1 mile from AT&T Park. My only criticism is that my room did not have AC. But I'm the type that loves his room 50 below. So need for one. Overall Id recommend this place to anyone."

"The building was an old apartment building from what I could tell. No ac but you can open the window and I found a plug in heater in the closet? The room was extremely small it was just me so that was fine. Not somewhere I would take my daughter as there is not enough room and the channels were very limited. It is a great location but no frills at all. And I don't care you stay in San Francisco there are tons of homeless for the most part they leave you alone this place was no exception."

"If you are not planning on spending much time in your room except to sleep and are looking for something centrally located then this hotel is well priced. The rooms are exceptionally small even by San Francisco standards and the interiors are bland and a little depressing. The hotel offers very few amenities and the staff is not particularly friendly. On the plus side the beds are comfortable, the internet free, and there are coffee makers in every room. As other reviewers have mentioned it is in the Tenderloin District so expect to see quite a few panhandlers and homeless people when you are coming and going."

"Good hotel...cool old building...strange neighborhood. Funny what a difference one block can make in a big city. Lots of homeless and vagrant folks right outside the door though they seemed to keep to themselves for the most part. As a female I would not go out at night alone. I understand that the hotel can't do much about the people that live in the neighborhood and I was reassured by a police presence (on foot and in cars) as well as an evening security guard at the hotel.
The hotel was clean, bed was comfy, the room was just right although the TV was on a strange wall...you had to look sideways from the bed. We faced away from the street-side and had no problems with noise.I would've loved some sort of continental breakfast but at least there was coffee.
The hotel staff was great; checking us into a room before the scheduled check-in time, dealing with loud neighbors and keeping the room next to ours vacant for a night, giving good directions, and arranging a town car for an early ride (4:45am) to the Oakland airport."

"It's definitely not a 3 star hotel, more like an old beater 2 star with a few new furniture pieces. You can literally hear EVERYTHING in the neighboring rooms; I can see why the hotel makes you sign a zero noise pledge. It's a strange neighborhood, physically very nice with some cute shops and restaurants, but full of drugged homeless types. It wasn't terrible, but we definitely won't be coming back."

"The hotel was very clean. I would say pretty retro if you like the flavor of the past. It was quiet and had a good location to all the shopping you can imagine. A short walk to the Powell cable car. It is differently in the tender loin district. It is next to the homeless shelter house. If you want to have a taste of San Francisco with the convenience of getting around on public transportation this is the place. It's a cheap hotel with very nice people running it."

"Stayed at this hotel for 4 days and 5 nights. Overall it was okay for the price we paid for. The neighbourhood was not that great. Even though the hotel was right off of Market Street/ Union Square, my friend and I felt unsafe walking back to and from the Bart station at night AND during the day. Even though the homeless kept to themselves, but I don't want to have to be worrying about my safety like this during my vacation.
The staff at this hotel were not as friendly as I liked. I saw one of the front desk staff during their night shift speak extremely inappropriately and ( in an condescending way) to a family that was not familiar with English. This is truly unacceptable as the family was only asking for directions to the closets pizza joint.
Also, there was a lack of service personnels at the front desk as I was checking out. I had to wait 20 mins for someone to help me AND I got charged an extra 2 nights of parking. Apparently, there is an unwritten policy from the hotel where you will be charged for parking even if your car is not in the lot. In other words, if rented a car and returned it mid-stay of your trip, parking costs will be charged to your account for the total days you are staying at the hotel. I'm not sure if I totally agree with this policy.
I will not be returning to stay at this hotel.

"Just stayed here two nights ago and was very pleased. It was at a very nice location but as they say on their signs 'Left is Right.' It is on the edge of Union Square and the Tenderloin Dist. and there was an obvious difference. Would not want to arrive after 9ish. The only problem was there was no place to eat breakfast that was in close walking distance, especially when you have to leave in a hurry. Also they start maid service before 8 am. Luckily I was in the room right next to the maid closet whose door squeaked. I also wanted to sleep until 8:30 which did not happen. The safety of the hotel was very nice; you had to have a room key to access the elevator from the lobby, enter through the back door, and get into the door at the top of the first flight of stairs. Overall good experience and would book here again."

"I think the hotel is a good value for SF ... sure, it isn't in the best part of town, but you only need to walk a block to be in a better area. Nice to have on-site parking available for a reasonable amount (yes $30 is reasonable for SF). Was on the 9th floor with view toward Market Street - not bad at all. Room was clean ... would stay here again. Perhaps would not recommend to a female staying alone, only because of the riff-raff on the street in this area ... but otherwise a great value."

"The Hotel Metropolis is very nicely decorated on the inside, and is reasonably priced for SF. The staff was very helpful. However, it sits right on the edge of a bad part of town. Our room was on the 4th floor and the window looked onto Turk St. We heard all kinds of screaming, singing, and yelling going on throughout the night which made it difficult to sleep. Also, the mattress on the bed was extremely soft and, after the first night, I requested extra blankets and pillows and slept on the floor for the remainder of our time there. We will not stay there in the future. "
