Few people seemed to have issues with booking in this hotel. The room was decent but really noisy because of the street. Had to wear earplugs in order to sleep. They were renewing the rooms in couple of floors and the workers were occupying the lift all the time. Definitely not worth the price, but everything in SF seemed really expensive.

Got a great deal on this hotel through Hotwire with three friends. Room was small but newly-renovated and quite clean. Fan did not seem to work well and made a lot of noise throughout the night. 10-minute walk to metro and we also walked all around the area (Union Square is not far!). It felt safe but many homeless people were around (this seems to be true of most of SF honestly). Staff were kind enough to hold our bags for us before check-in and after check-out.

Pretty good location with regards to Union Square. Not super cheap, but fairly well priced considering how nice it was. Very elegant room. Friendly staff. They let us leave ours bags at the hotel after check out so we could wander round the city before going to the airport.

I found this hotel to not be very clean, there was a lot of dust and grim on windows, the shower did not seem very clean and there were even some hairs in the bed which is totally gross. The worst part about my stay is that the hot water heater broke so I did not have hot water at all. The hotel did not make any effort to notify people that the hot water was out, So I ended up running the water for like 15 minutes before I finally called the front desk. It took offense to this since there is a w... Read more

Stayed for 4 nights, our room was ok, clean and nicely furnished. However, we couldn't get more than luke warm water in the bathroom. They offered to look at it which they did but it didn't change and then on the last night it was fine... Quite frustrating as it was cold when we stayed and a hot shower would have been nice. They are renovating half of the hotel, this didn't really affect us as the noise and mess is concealed. The staff seemed untrained, they could have all been new but there wa... Read more

First the good points, good location & building had character but these were far outweighed by very noisy room. Traffic noise was so loud it felt like the windows were open. Only 1 small lift which was often commandeered by workmen who were redecorating & also on occasion, lift not working properly. Not good if you're on the 6th floor! No air conditioning. Old & ineffective plumbing meant it took a long time for water to run hot. Windows were filthy. This hotel needs some investment in it.

I am extremely disgusted at the service I have received from this Hotel. I emailed the hotel with the only readily available email on the website to confirm my booking and received my first and only reply to confirm and state that I have been charged. A few weeks later I was charged for the room yet again (to the sum of $1000) and emailed to demand the money back. The transaction was cancelled but I received no response from the hotel in form of explanation or apology. I was then charged FOR A T... Read more

The staff is very accommodating to our specifications about what room we wanted. The valet was quick but when returning to drop off our car, there was no space in front of the hotel to park since there was a construction truck parked there. So, we had to wait for a space to open up since we did not want to risk getting a ticket. The elevator is small but we were in the third floor so it was not a problem. Our room was clean and after our first night, our room was cleaned and the trash was ta... Read more

We stayed 4 nights. It's got a great location just a few blocks from Union Square and for us a walk able 30 minutes from Pier 39. Pros Hotel is clean Central location Quiet on the interior side Basic breakfast included Workout room Cons Awkward bathroom and sink Low water pressure in shower Radiator didn't work (it was windy and cold a couple of the days we were there) No lighting in the closet Great spot if you're staying for the location not luxury. Worked great for us. We were out a lot.

As soon as we walked into the hotel we were greeted very friendly. It's a cute small hotel. The elevator is very small. However the hotel is nice. The rooms are decorated for perfection. It reminds me of a hotel in Paris. A great room and the beds sleep amazing. I would stay here again. However it isn't in the best area of San Francisco. It's not in a bad area but not the best. It's not far from some bad streets. I'm telling you this because we were unaware of it at the time. No one told us and ... Read more

Hotel is an older building which has been decorated to look shabby chic. The room is small but comfortable if you're not spending much time in it. There is no air conditioning - must keep a window open to get fresh air! I guess this is a common San Francisco hotel thing??? Had I known I would've booked a more modern hotel. Hotel itself was average - with a small workout room, bar, and breakfast area. **There is only one (very old) elevator which is extremely small (holds about 2-3 people crammed... Read more

I stayed in the hotel for 7 nights for a conference I was attending. The best thing about the hotel is its location. It is conveniently located near Union square making it the nerve centre for shopping, dining, going to Embarcadero, Mission district, airport (just 30 min train ride away), practically anywhere useful. Although the rooms are pricey but the San Francisco price/location factor makes it a budget hotel :-). Rooms are clean and cosy, I liked the old-feel look of the hotel. The room h... Read more

My experience has been positive. The hotel is centrally located, minutes walk from Union Square. The staff is friendly. My room was generously spacious with coffee and tea being provided every morning. Breakfast is modest, however, should you want a more substantial meal, the choice of coffee shops and restaurants nearby is ample.

This is a motel with a 2 stars at most. Extremely small bathroom, unconfortable. Crooked floors in entire room. someone screaming outside all night long, and in addition to that lobby is under construction with dust and noise.... Paid $140 for it as part of a good deal from hotwire. This was definetly not a good deal!

Took my niece to San Francisco for the weekend. First time in San Francisco for both of us. Check in process was quick and one seasoned front desk agent was very helpful with restaurant suggestions and map guidance. The other three we encountered needed a little more experience. Especially with transportation questions how to get around using the bus. The room was quite nice, very spacious and clean. Plenty of room for both of us and a big walk in closet to hang clothes and store your luggage.... Read more

I found a really good deal with this hotel, I just wish I would've known more about the location. It's close to Union Square, which has a lot of homeless. The hotel itself is next to community house, which offered some lovely late night yelling matches that were kind of funny, but not very conducive to a good night's sleep. (I'm also pretty sure the first night we heard gun shots, but can't say for sure.) Instead of walking around at dark we used Uber/Lyft to get around. If you don't mind this t... Read more

I am writing in regard to a stay at the Hotel Mark Twain in room 803 the nights of June 28th and June 29th. I chose the Mark Twain because the location is good, and it had a three star or better rating on some of the Internet travel sites. The evening of our arrival there was no heat in the room. After talking with the front desk staff they assured me that they would check the boiler room, and we would have heat. We did not get any that night. I could see that there were some significant r... One side of the block the the Mark Twain hotel is situated on is definitely not tourist friendly (look up Tenderloin). To the extent that the receptionist marked on a map for us where we shouldn't walk. The other is close to Union Square. There is a facility down the block which provides meals for the homeless which means there are a lot of people sleeping and hanging around near the hotel at night. I have no problem with the homeless in San Francisco and i'm, sympathetic to their situation, ho... Read more

The hotel is not very good. It's an old hotel. My shower was not working well. The rooms smell bad and the worst is the areas where the hotel is. Indeed, many drug dealers, house less... We park our car just in front of the hotel and we got the window broken. Don't park your car at the street. If you want the hotel has a parking but it is 49 USD PER NIGHT!

We were very comfortable here. The hotel is located close to Union Square. The neighborhood has many restaurants and shops. The staff was very pleasant and accommodating. Free breakfast was great. We loved the old charm of the hotel. Mark Twain was everywhere.

I had a nice stay at Hotel Mark Twain, my room was recently renovated but not quite finished to a 4?? standard but more than acceptable. Minor gripe was that the room was not very thoughtfully laid-out in my opinion - why have a walk in robe and compromise space in the small bathroom? Anyways not a big deal. Renovations on the lobby were also ongoing during my stay in July so I could not use the gym and other facilities downstairs. BE AWARE the hotel is on the edge of the Tenderloin district ... I've stayed here a couple times for work now. It's quite reasonably priced, but generally aligned with local boutique hotels on the Tenderloin side of Union Square. It's right on the edge of a not so nice area, just next to the historic Glide UMC. There seems to be next to no sound insulation in the hotel, which means you get lots of street noise and can hear much of what your neighbors are doing. As a standard boutique, each room layout seems to be a bit different, and as an older building ther... Read more

We are a family who booked this hotel well in advance. Once we arrived there we did not receive what was promised!!! The whole staff was rude... NOTHING hospitality like. They insulted us and called us bad names. Entered the room to go to the toilet whilst check in was made and the rooms were old. We were glad that we did not stay there. Thank you for showing us and other staying guests how unfriendly the manager himself but mostly the two front office employees were. Would deff not recommend... Read more

Hotel is close to homeless area and to church that prepare free lunches for homeless people. Nothing wrong but just difficult context for families... Personnel of hotel really not polite. They refused 3 of our credit cards with no reasons, probably for a system default. They were looking at us like: "It's your problem you can sleep on the road outside" Finally one card worked... Be aware that, in San Francisco, you get what you pay for. The company that bought this property and are now renovating it have good intentions. The property is in a great location. But the property itself has limitations that will not be cured by the renovations that they are making (small stifling lobby, tiny tiny tiny elevator...ehm broom closet sized. Odd-shaped old old rooms that seem old no matter how much paint you slap on them or modern-y furnishings you use). But, hey, San Francisco is ... Read more

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in August. I found the room to be a good size and the furnishings nice, but that's about all in the way of positives. The majority of the staff were rude and unhelpful, with the exception of one man who was quite lovely to deal with. The hotel directory in the room says they provide laundry services but they do not. The hotel itself was actually pretty good, the staff were great and the room was cosy, there is a valet service with a parking garage nearby, the only downfall really is the location being a bit of a walk away from the main sights and quite a few homeless around but its not entirely fair to judge the hotel on this, the price is probably cheaper for this reason so I was fine with it.

Overall, the Hotel Mark Twain in San Francisco was quite good, with a good location near Union Square, however is hampered by the construction going on. Check in was a little brief, with no mention of any breakfast, despite there seeming being breakfast on the street. The rooms have been renovated in a style unique to anything else we'd experienced in the US. They do not have a refrigerator, however do have a big TV and ours a great view onto the garden and an old school painted brick wall. ... Read more
