Few people seemed to have issues with booking in this hotel. The room was decent but really noisy because of the street. Had to wear earplugs in order to sleep. They were renewing the rooms in couple of floors and the workers were occupying the lift all the time. Definitely not worth the price, but everything in SF seemed really expensive.

Got a great deal on this hotel through Hotwire with three friends. Room was small but newly-renovated and quite clean. Fan did not seem to work well and made a lot of noise throughout the night. 10-minute walk to metro and we also walked all around the area (Union Square is not far!). It felt safe but many homeless people were around (this seems to be true of most of SF honestly). Staff were kind enough to hold our bags for us before check-in and after check-out.

I found this hotel to not be very clean, there was a lot of dust and grim on windows, the shower did not seem very clean and there were even some hairs in the bed which is totally gross. The worst part about my stay is that the hot water heater broke so I did not have hot water at all. The hotel did not make any effort to notify people that the hot water was out, So I ended up running the water for like 15 minutes before I finally called the front desk. It took offense to this since there is a w... Read more

Stayed for 4 nights, our room was ok, clean and nicely furnished. However, we couldn't get more than luke warm water in the bathroom. They offered to look at it which they did but it didn't change and then on the last night it was fine... Quite frustrating as it was cold when we stayed and a hot shower would have been nice. They are renovating half of the hotel, this didn't really affect us as the noise and mess is concealed. The staff seemed untrained, they could have all been new but there wa... Read more

First the good points, good location & building had character but these were far outweighed by very noisy room. Traffic noise was so loud it felt like the windows were open. Only 1 small lift which was often commandeered by workmen who were redecorating & also on occasion, lift not working properly. Not good if you're on the 6th floor! No air conditioning. Old & ineffective plumbing meant it took a long time for water to run hot. Windows were filthy. This hotel needs some investment in it.

I am extremely disgusted at the service I have received from this Hotel. I emailed the hotel with the only readily available email on the website to confirm my booking and received my first and only reply to confirm and state that I have been charged. A few weeks later I was charged for the room yet again (to the sum of $1000) and emailed to demand the money back. The transaction was cancelled but I received no response from the hotel in form of explanation or apology. I was then charged FOR A T... Read more

The staff is very accommodating to our specifications about what room we wanted. The valet was quick but when returning to drop off our car, there was no space in front of the hotel to park since there was a construction truck parked there. We stayed 4 nights. It's got a great location just a few blocks from Union Square and for us a walk able 30 minutes from Pier 39. Pros Hotel is clean Central location Quiet on the interior side Basic breakfast included Workout room Cons Awkward bathroom and sink Low water pressure in shower Radiator didn't work (it was windy and cold a couple of the days we were there) No lighting in the closet Great spot if you're staying for the location not luxury. As soon as we walked into the hotel we were greeted very friendly. It's a cute small hotel. The elevator is very small. However the hotel is nice. The rooms are decorated for perfection. It reminds me of a hotel in Paris. A great room and the beds sleep amazing. I would stay here again. However it isn't in the best area of San Francisco. It's not in a bad area but not the best. Hotel is an older building which has been decorated to look shabby chic. The room is small but comfortable if you're not spending much time in it. There is no air conditioning - must keep a window open to get fresh air! I guess this is a common San Francisco hotel thing??? Had I known I would've booked a more modern hotel. Hotel itself was average - with a small workout room, bar, and breakfast area. **There is only one (very old) elevator which is extremely small (holds about 2-3 people crammed... Read more

I stayed in the hotel for 7 nights for a conference I was attending. The best thing about the hotel is its location. It is conveniently located near Union square making it the nerve centre for shopping, dining, going to Embarcadero, Mission district, airport (just 30 min train ride away), practically anywhere useful. My experience has been positive. The hotel is centrally located, minutes walk from Union Square. The staff is friendly. My room was generously spacious with coffee and tea being provided every morning. Breakfast is modest, however, should you want a more substantial meal, the choice of coffee shops and restaurants nearby is ample.

Took my niece to San Francisco for the weekend. First time in San Francisco for both of us. Check in process was quick and one seasoned front desk agent was very helpful with restaurant suggestions and map guidance. The other three we encountered needed a little more experience. I found a really good deal with this hotel, I just wish I would've known more about the location. It's close to Union Square, which has a lot of homeless. The hotel itself is next to community house, which offered some lovely late night yelling matches that were kind of funny, but not very conducive to a good night's sleep. One side of the block the the Mark Twain hotel is situated on is definitely not tourist friendly (look up Tenderloin). To the extent that the receptionist marked on a map for us where we shouldn't walk. The other is close to Union Square. I had a nice stay at Hotel Mark Twain, my room was recently renovated but not quite finished to a 4‚?? standard but more than acceptable. Minor gripe was that the room was not very thoughtfully laid-out in my opinion - why have a walk in robe and compromise space in the small bathroom? Anyways not a big deal. I've stayed here a couple times for work now. It's quite reasonably priced, but generally aligned with local boutique hotels on the Tenderloin side of Union Square. It's right on the edge of a not so nice area, just next to the historic Glide UMC. There seems to be next to no sound insulation in the hotel, which means you get lots of street noise and can hear much of what your neighbors are doing. Be aware that, in San Francisco, you get what you pay for. The company that bought this property and are now renovating it have good intentions. The property is in a great location. But the property itself has limitations that will not be cured by the renovations that they are making (small stifling lobby, tiny tiny tiny elevator...ehm broom closet sized. The hotel itself was actually pretty good, the staff were great and the room was cosy, there is a valet service with a parking garage nearby, the only downfall really is the location being a bit of a walk away from the main sights and quite a few homeless around but its not entirely fair to judge the hotel on this, the price is probably cheaper for this reason so I was fine with it.

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 3 nights as part of our road trip, we went from Vegas to LA to San Fran then back to Vegas. This was the best hotel our whole trip. Staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. Rooms were clean and tidy, safe in the room, air con. Rooms are roomy, sound proof windows. Would highly recommend! Reasonably priced too!

I stayed 4 nights last October in a double room. I chhosed this hotel because it waqs close to a conference center where i should be everyday. Th location is great, close to transport and shopping areas. Union square is only 5' from there. Despite i have heard about homelesses and dangerous neighboorhood, i found it normal for walking during the night. Of course there many homeless people in the city, comparing with Europe and mainly Greece , but i didnt feel that they were dangerous. Regarding ... Read more

Our 5th time to the property...First time as the Tilden (new ownership, etc.) Like the location and easy access to things we want to do and see. Lobby expanded...still no food service on site but plenty close by. I would go back for the "right deal" but moved out of the category of "romantic boutique getaway... Read more

The staff told us at least that it was new when we complained. You can hear everything between the rooms. Everything, even when your neighbour pulls down the zipper in the trousers. We were staying a room looking towards the back, and we where wakened by a terrible noise from a room on our floor but on the front side of the hotel, quite far away. In t... Read more

I was there with my friend for a couple of days, and it was just great. The location is perfectly situated, the room was comfy and clean, and the staff was super friendly! I'd definitely come back to this place.
