I just spent the weekend in a double room here with my adult nephew. We were in town mostly to see the Cubs play the Giants two nights in a row, so spending a lot of time in the room wasn't crucial. Very few hotels popped up in my searches with two beds in a room. I like Union Square for its location and proximity to dining and entertainment options, so this was our choice. This hotel, or at least the room we stayed in, 218 is just too old and run down to command nearly $250.00 per night simp... Read more

Recently stayed at this hotel for six nights. It had a bit of character and was in a great location. There is no bar or restaurant but it is close to many good places to eat and drink, and within walking distance of Fishersmans wharf. Rooms were small but that's what we expected for a city centre hotel that was such a reasonable price. Everything was clean and the bed was really comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. Had a great time in San Francisco and would definitely recommend t... Read more

This hotel was old but authentic and the location was perfect for exploring San Francisco. It was right near Union Square and there are many places to eat, shop and drink there. It is clean and supplies are restocked so we were very well looked after.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay at Hotel Cartwright. The location was unbeatable - close to cable car stops, Union Square, restaurants and shops. The staff were welcoming and incredibly helpful during our stay, recommending places to visit and the best way to get around. The room itself was comfortable and clean - perfect for a short stay.

The Staff was excellent and very friendly. The location is perfect ! Now that I know about the Cartwright we will stay there again. Our room was small but that is to be expected in San Francisco i was pleasantly surprised to see that we had a walk in closet.

This is an older hotel but in a great location just off Union Square. The rooms are basic but they are quiet and they are well cleaned. There is a nice lobby and a place for a beer at night if you want that. They have good parking rates if you have a car, with in and out priviledges on Bush St around the corner. The only let down was one memebr of staff on reception: an older woman. She rolls her eyes if you have a question that needs answering, she ignores you when you say g'day. This is very ... Read more

I would appreciate staying at the hotel I book - and not being escorted to another hotel upon arrival. Lots of research and consideration goes into selecting a hotel and I've never been made to go to another.

The hotel is very charming and yes the rooms are on the small side but they are very clean and comfortable. My only complaint is that our room had a leak in the bathroom that allowed water from who knows where to drip all over the tub, floor and sink area. They offered to move us to another room but as we had already moved two different rooms (due to noise from an a/c unit and from the elevator) to arrive in our final room, that's just inconvenient considering we are exhausted from a long day. Myself and my son stayed here, small rooms but we went to get to know the city, the beds were comfy, and clean! Found the staff very friendly and helpful. Great location, and we saw ppl with their dogs, very welcoming. I loved this hotel as it has character and charm that you don't find in bigger hotels, felt the staff got to know us where in a bigger hotel they don't get to know their guests. I would recommend this hotel and I have to people we met on our later travels!! Thank you for a lovely ... Read more

The hotel had a very strong scent, they were trying to cover cigarette smell I ended up noticing after staying at the lobby for a long time waiting for my friend to pick me up. The room was very tiny, bed sloped to one side, I was not able to sleep, the bathroom had no room to even make one step, you sit at the toilet, then get up and the sink is in front of you, then turn left, not even a step and the tub us right there. No room whatsoever to move comfortably around the bathroom. The room was o... Read more

The location of the hotel is spot on. Everything is close to what you need. Shopping, excursions and about a 20-30 minutes walk from Fisherman's Wharf. If you're not much for car rental in a big city or public transport that's fine, just make sure to bring your hiking shoes. San Francisco is very walk friendly. The staff is very remarkable, friendly and helpful. A relatively young guy by the tour/excursion desk was pleasant and helpful during our stay. He helped us book a tour to the scenic Yose... Friendly reception staff. Our room was compact, queen sized bed with a couple of chairs. Furniture was in keeping with the style of the hotel. Hotel undergoing refurbishment but that did not affect us. Bathroom also compact but had everything you need. Very handy for Union Square. No restaurant or bar on premises. 20% discount voucher available for Lori's 24hr diner almost next door.

First off San Francisco is an e pensive city and hotels are not cheap. The hotel is in a good location only few hundred meters from Union Square and all it shops. There is a cable car stop right at the corner that will take you all the way to Fishermans Warf. Diner next door but it is over priced for the quality of food. The hotel itself is an old building and undergoing refurbishments. The lobby is nice and clean and there is a lift service to the rooms. The big downfall are the rooms. Our ro... Read more

Not too fancy, just right. Plus, you can get everywhere from their door. Save your money for restaurants...don't blow it on over-priced hotels. The staff are really accomodating, and there are really great places to walk to nearby.

Room: small, outdated. no fridge or micro. great bed. Even though small and outdated, the room was charming. Bathroom: small, good water pressure in shower. Never turned on the TV, just looked out the window for entertainment! No breakfast, just tea and coffee. Currently being remodeled. Downstairs common areas beautiful. We would definitely stay again.

We recently stayed here. The Cartwright Hotel (or as the staff call it, Old Betsy), is in a great location. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel seemed to have a lot of history. Classic downtown San Fran hotel, close to the action for a reasonable price. Highly recommended!

I've been to SF before, but my husband had not. We were in town for our anniversary. I wanted to find a hotel that was central to all of the places I knew he'd want to visit in the city, so Union Square made the most sense. This hotel is a couple of blocks from Chinatown (one of my favorite areas of the city), one block north of Union Square, and about 4-5 blocks from the Powell Street BART station, which makes it easy to take the BART to/from the airport. This hotel is very cute and clean. The ... Read more

Older hotel so the rooms are small. However, they are nicely updated and very clean. The hotel staff are very helpful and friendly. Service is good. There are no microwaves or refrigerators. An easy walk to the financial district. Lots of good shopping and restaurants nearby

I chose this hotel primarily for its location - central to San Francisco's hub so easy to visit all the things we wanted to. The hotel is old and certainly has character, much like the chap who checked us in! He could have done with being a tad more welcoming. Our room was overlooking a wall which was a trifle disappointing but it was big enough and clean and the bed was comfy. We hadn't come to look out of the window after all. Plenty of hot water, soft towels and ample toiletries were great. N... Read more

Couldn't have been more pleased with choosing the Cartwright for our trip to SF. It was close to everything we needed. Staff was excellent & went out of their way to meet our needs. There are plenty of MUNI stops within walking distance including 1 right outside. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone especially if you're the to see the city and don't mind a small & very clean room stay here.

I was extremely happy with our stay at the Cartwright. This was our first trip to San Francisco so we weren't sure what to expect. Newly renovated with extremely friendly staff. The rooms were small but definitely worth the price as we weren't there to hang out in our room. Most importantly, CLEAN!

3 min walk to union square, convenient for the cable car and all public transport. The room was perfect, we stayed in a newly refurbished one. Doesn't do breakfast but the helpful staff gave us 3 20% off coupons to eat at Loris Diner next door. Overall very good!

The weather was cool and we left our window open the entire time. This was where we stayed for our 10th anniversary and we weren't disappointed. It's an old hotel (small rooms), but our room was remodeled and modern. They are called boutique hotels for a reason, and you must stay in one when you go to San Fran. There was a bit of street noise, but honestly, the noise was of the cable cars going by chiming their bell. That's pretty awesome. There is a Walgreen's and 7/11 across the street and a ... Read more
