San Francisco is a beautiful city, not for people who struggle walking though. It's quite hilly in places. Union square should be your main focal point for seeing the city. Book a city tour there well worth it.

This hotel was not too expensive, Its on the edge of the Tenderloin which can be a little sketchy at nights, we had no issues however. Staff were helpful and friendly. WIFI worked well. This hotel is showing its age and the hallways are quite narrow, the rooms are good a with lots of space, they are however not very soundproof. Bathrooms were clean and functional.

This is a decent hotel. It is clean and the rooms are very comfortable, from the bed and bedding to the desk chair (I unfortunately had to spend a lot of time working). I appreciated the little touches, such as the robe, the keurig coffee maker, and the pitcher to fill up with water to bring to your room. There were only two things that could have been better--one was that my room missed a cleaning one afternoon when i had to come to my room for 2 hours to get ready for an event. I left before t... The room was good size, the hotel staff is unbelievably friendly and helpful (they pushed house-keeping for early checkin as we arrived early, printed stuff for me, helped with packages, were always funny and nice) everything was clean and tidy. The room was serviced daily, every little detail. Internet (WiFi) was working well throughout the stay. the only drawback I could think of is that there was no A/C (there is a heater, and a ceiling fan) - but I did not need any A/C - I guess San Francis... Stayed 3 nights. Hotel has a great atmosphere if you want something different to standard hotel rooms. Well located - we walked everywhere but buses plentiful. Reception staff really helpful and friendly. Early evening drinks was a great way for us to meet other guests and get tips on what to do in SF. Saha restaurant has an extensive menu. We had a good dinner here - but you need to be up early if you want yoghurt and fruit for breakfast - they had run out by 8.15am. Would definitely stay her... Read more

Friendly staff, clean rooms, great location and reasonable prices all add up to a hotel that I plan to stay at every time I visit San Francisco. Wine and music in the lobby added a nice touch to our stay at this colorfully decorated hotel. The great smelling bath soap, shampoo and moisurizer was an added bonus.

Our stay of several nights at the hotel was quite satisfactory with very well presented rooms. The staff were very friendly and a special mention to the concierge who showed us the dangerous parts of the city on a map to avoid. The housekeeping was very good and the rooms were neat. The only down side is that I would have liked a fridge in the room. Other than that I considered it great value for money.

Very charming and interesting hotel in a great location, within walking distance to the financial district and many desirable areas of San Fran. It is nicely, and colorfully decorated, with interesting art, textures, and attention to detail, a terrific restaurant, especially for breakfast, and very friendly service overall. I highly recommend this hotel for those looking for a smaller hotel with local charm and personality.

With hotels, it is often the case that one gets what one pays for. No one should compare this hotel with a modern or more upscale hotel. This is an old, oft refurbished building where on my stay the elevator did not work and the shower ran cold. These inconveniences should not distract from the high. Ale to be placed on the good natured staff, whose cheer was a decided plus. The location allows for a nice walk or two, with restaurants not too far away. Adjacent to the hotel is a middle easter... The first night i heard litterally every word my drunk neighbours who were in the ajoining room were saying. Plus you litterally hear doors slam non stop. The second night the staff put me in a non ajoining room after i complained about the noice. It was a bit beter, but stil quite some noice. I would not choose this hotel again.

My 11 year old daughter and I visited recently and stayed 3 nights. This is a beautiful boutique hotel which was well maintained and ran by very friendly and welcoming staff. My concern for families is the location. I feel that it's the wrong neighbourhood for families. My daughter and I didn't feel completely safe walking the streets. And you wouldn't walk at night. The Hotel Carlton is a lower end offering from Joie de Vivre, a very light touch renovation of a historic property at the nexus of the Nob Hill/Tenderloin/Polk St areas. While the Carlton should not be confused with more substantial boutique hotels, at the price I found (~$130 at the height of summer) it is a world away and SF's typical crummy budget hotel, despite being only moderately more expensive. I just wanted to compliment the housekeeping staff for how clean our room was both times staying there! Great friendly staff and an awesome location in a busy city. We stayed at the Hotel Carlton 2 days before we were getting married at SF City Hall. We told this to the receptionist at check-in (unfortunately we didn't get his name to be able to say thank you properly here), and were put into the most magnificent room on the 9th floor with a great view of San Francisco. We were also treated to a lovely bottle of California wine. We had a lovely stay, with great recommendations for restaurants and entertainment. The only downside, which is not the fault of t... From the minute that we stepped into the hotel lobby to the time that we left, we were welcomed by the extremely warm and efficient staff. They acknowledged our son, treating him as a real person; and quickly checked us in. Nice touches abound such as cheerful decor (unlike many other SF hotels which can be drab), and a late afternoon happy hour with music. The rooms were clean and large. A highly recommended hotel.

Really enjoyed my stay here. The staff were always very helpful. The rooms were lovely, well maintained, with a super comfy bed. There is free wine and music in the lobby at 5:30 every day. Really close to some great restaurants.

I loved the white clean bedding and towels and the staff we wonderful but I was expecting a bit much I guess, for the cost I was disappointed with the dingy (lots of garbage on streets etc) neighbourhood and it is a very old building - love the character just surprised to find the crooked walls and many layer of paint and old small bathroom and no view plus very loud (just for the price and the 4/5 great reviews) good location to get to Union Square area and many good places to eat/things to see... Hotel - The hotel has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The lobby is a lovely and comfortable area with interesting features. Unfortunately the hotel were unable to do dinner during the time we were there but they do have a dining area for breakfast, although we didn't opt for this. The hotel has a simple layout and very easy to find your way around. Room - Our room on one of the higher floors was large with views across the city rooftops. The room is refreshing and modern. Very warm welcome from Theo on arrival. A great start to a fantastic 4 night stay in SF end of August 2016. Lots of useful advice on car parking (don't waste your time driving around the city), public transport, walking, eating and sightseeing. Handy city map so you know exactly where you are from the start. Quirky looking hotel with very individual decor, nothing like the corporate style of most city centre hotels. I'm not sure how to feel about this place. From the lobby to the room i can't figure out what theme the hotel is trying to achieve. So many different things that don't entirely make sense. Room; average size, big bed with nice linen, plus extra blanket. Tv, coffee making machine. Good amenities guide. Good shower although ours need attention as it spits water over the floor. Quite noisy, can hear people in other rooms and hall, and when other doors close the wall shakes. And the hallway light c... Read more

Wow!!! What a great little hotel!! We absolutely loved our stay! Free wine each night in the lobby. The front desk staff was incredibly friendly and remembered us each night we came back in. Super easy to valet a car. Room was adorable, just like pictured on their website. I wouldn't even consider staying somewhere else if I came back to San Fran. Super easy to get to everywhere we wanted to go, easy to be picked up by uber/lyft. Plenty of breakfast/coffee around the area. Walls are a little thi... Read more

We travelled to California for a 2 week vacation, starting in San Francisco and driving down to San Diego. Spent first 3 nights of holiday at The Hotel Carlton and had a very enjoyable stay. Staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The room was clean and had plenty of space. Chinatown is around 20 mins walk away and Fisherman's Wharf is a good 35-40 minutes up and down the hills of San Francisco. Wouldn't hesitate to come back here again.

Super friendly and helpful staff. Quirky but bright and spacious room with new bathroom. Fab coffee machine. Easy to get around the city from this location. Even provided me with a fridge as I was in town for the week. Great value for money. Wifi worked well for business calls and online webinars. Fun local musicians nightly in the lobby, with complimentary wine happy hour. Only downside was the noise from my neighbours and the hallways. Otherwise would have given 5 stars.

We've just stayed here for the first three nights of a 16 night trip along the West coast of the USA. Quirky little hotel just a few blocks from Union Square, Chinatown etc. Rooms are clean and comfy with nice beds and a great shower. Plenty of space for the two of us and our luggage. Staff very friendly. Would definitely recommend, particularly as hotels in San Francisco are mega expensive and this was reasonable in comparison. We'd definitely come back again.

This is a smaller style, very nice hotel. The room and bathroom were nice and the staff very friendly and helpful. There was some renovation work going on which resulted in occasional noise. On the down side I felt a little uneasy in the area of the hotel and venturing only a short distance to the south took us to a place we really didn't want to be. From then on we only walked north or east which felt better, and only 10 minutes from Union Square.

We booked this hotel as our original location was fully booked on the dates we needed, so we were unsure of what to really expect. Its not in the best of locations, but this is a city , it has good areas and not so good areas, but it was close enough to the main tourist spots so you could walk and yet far away that it was relatively peaceful at night. Rooms were unusual, it was good to see they had taken the age of the building and kept the original features,, This isn't a corporate hotel, but ... Read more

Comfortable, homey feel to rooms, not like a corporate chain. Pleasantly decorated with Himalayan art. Neighborhood is very convenient to major bus lines and easy walk to Union Square/Downtown, but its location on the edge of the Tenderloin might turn some off. Don't be surprised to see homeless people on the nearby streets, but that's not uncommon in many parts of S.F. Although on the average everything is fine (location, room size, amenities etc) I have two remarks: one is the noise. You can literally hear your neighbours word for word. Earplugs needed! The second is cleanliness. The bathtub still had hair in it from the previous person. Overall the hotel seems pretty run down. Decor has Asian elements which has to be to your taste.
