The rooms were clean but slightly shabby. Their website needs updated. They no longer have a theater. We were disappointed with that. Also was being remodeled, so no breakfast except for a bag with granola bar, yogurt and water. Front desk staff were very helpful. They give you a glass of wine on arrival. By day a great location, at night it's a different story. Homeless people were laying on sidewalk and sleeping or hanging out near hotel entrance. If it was just my girlfriend and I, we would ... At night, there are sketchy characters and homeless people everywhere on the block. The door was locked and nobody was attending the desk when I arrived at night, forcing me to wait outside and be accosted by said characters. Very dangerous if you are a woman or even with a woman. I tried calling the hotel from outside several times with several different numbers, to no avail. I was eventually let in by another patron who was leaving. When I finally got checked in and arrived at "my" room, I fou... Read more

My partner and I stayed here for 4 nights and had a good time. The hotel itself is comfortable and fairly basic with free wifi. A glass of wine was offered when we checked in which was a nice touch! :The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The hotel is located close to union square. My only negative is our room was noisy from street traffic throughout the night.

Do not expect to get any sleep. Also, there are no amenities as advertised on the website and no effort to notify you about that when you book. - full size tub (there is a tiny shower) - breakfast (you might be lucky enough to grab a bag with water and an orange but otherwise will have to pay for water or soda at the desk) - movie theater - doorman (saw him once) otherwise it's mostly homeless people. It smells of urine. There is no air conditioning so you have to leave your windows open and... Read more

We were visiting for a mini vacation. Blanca treated us very well and made a birthday roadtrip special. The rest of the staff were very helpful and friendly with recommendations and assistance. The location was very central, we appreciated being in the middle of the action. I would definitely recommend and or stay on a future trip.

If you travel on a strict budget, the Bijou is a great option, because its rates are lower than those of the big chain hotels in and around Union Square. A small, older hotel just a short block from the Powell St. BART and Muni station as well as the big Westfield SF mall, it is great for the tourist who wants to make the most of his/her time in the City. Union Square and the theater district are just a few more blocks away. The rooms are very small, and while the colorful decor was once camp an... Read more

I'll start with the positives, because there are a couple. The staff were very friendly and there was breakfast each day. My kids also loved the lollipops by the front desk. There is no beating the location for sightseeing, just a block from public transportation. Unfortunately, I can't really say much more on the positive side. My family stayed here for 4 nights. They put us in a room that faced the street, where the constant noise of the homeless living just outside our window went on th... Read more

Very small room, very comfy bed. No air conditioning but it is so cold in San Francisco that you don't need it. Perfect location to visit the city. Walking distance to all possible type of transportation: Bart, cable car, 2 decks buses (City sightseeing tour bus). Walking distance the the big mall. I bought the Go Pass San Francisco, paid $20 more to get access to the blue line and I was very satisfied with this option. The first day, I have visited The Aquarium of the Bay and The Science. 2... Ideally located near Union Square, you can stay here and save big money to go shopping along the Market Street high brand stores nearby. Themed with the idea of an old movie house and displaying dozens of old pics and paintings of stars and theaters from decades ago, classics all, my college degree in mass media and love of old films made this stay worthwhile. It's central location and generously helping staff, modest cost and decor were the high points. It's quirky rooms, each named after a fil... Read more

It's not easy to find a good, clean bargain in downtown San Francisco. The Hotel Bijou has everything you need: clean, safe, wi-fi, morning coffee and yogurt. There are no plush extras, but the price is right. The desk is very friendly, efficient and helpful. The rooms are compact. The bathroom has a good, newish shower. Towels are adequate. We will return. Note: The panhandlers have gotten more aggressive here, and walking back at night takes courage...or consider a cab.

Hotel Bijou's location cannot be beat, especially as a business traveler on a budget who needed to stay close to Union Square. The hotel is eclectic and eccentric, show casing the Golden Age of Hollywood. Each room has a star on the door and is named after a different movie. The rooms are rather tight, with little wiggle room. Closet space is small, and the TV channels are limited. Given the location near the tenderloin, all sorts of sound could be heard throughout the night, but the hotel di... Read more

Small Rooms, bad location for Central Area, a lot of poor peoples in that area, noisy zone, very expensive for what they offer and "tricky" way for travel to Airport by "check-out" call reception. I will not recommend for a Family trip in SF.

This updated whimsical hotel is a fun place. Theater is closed (not mentioned on website) and turning into restaurant. This hotel is cleaned and people are courteous. The complementary coffee and/or tea were nice. After 6-7 pm the homeless swell the streets and the bar across the street made this location noisy and scary. It was bum nation. My family and I did not leave the hotel after 5 pm.

Hotel Bilou is a perfect place to start from if you want to explore the city on foot. It is located only five minutes from Union Square and Market Street. If you follow the street way up Nob Hill, it will take you directly to Fisherman's Wharf or Chinatown in half an hour. This part of San Francisco is loud and has got character, which also means that there are lots of people living in the streets asking you for a cigarette or some change, but you can't blame the hotel for that. The staff there ... Read more

A great hotel in a great location. A few minutes walk from the Powell Station which is easily reached by BART from San Francisco International. You can catch the Cable Car to Fisherman's Wharf from nearby too. There are homeless people in the area but this is no reflection on the hotel (it's a city-wide thing). Staff are friendly and happy to help. Free coffee day and night and a breakfast bag every morning. You can hear the city but its not a real problem and didn't stop us sleeping. They even ... I understand maybe from a tourist perspective this is a "great location" but I can assure you that from a business travelers standpoint it was a mess. I've stayed in hotels across the globe for work and this was the ONLY time I felt unsafe. The neighborhood is a mess and the homeless were literally sitting on the front step of the hotel when we arrived. Not even get me started on when we returned from a client meeting in the evening. On a positive note the sheets and towels were clean, and th... Read more

We stayed here for two nights as part of a city break. Rooms are of a good size, and each have a quirky name, ours being Escape From Alcatraz! There is no restaurant however the hotel provide a breakfast bag each morning which contains a Danish pastry, an orange and a bottle of water. Yoghurts are also available at breakfast time, as are tea and coffee throughout the whole day. We were also offered a complimentary glass of wine on our arrival - nice touch. The location is very central but I would advise against staying here if you are female and traveling alone. There are tons of homeless at all times of the day. There were a couple of times I felt unsafe. It is not the hotels fault but I feel like you should know these things. The rooms are small but have everything you need for a comfortable stay. The staff is very nice and had plenty of information on nearby food spots.

Our family spent 3 nights at the hotel recently. The staff were always attentive and considerate even before one of our family had a serious fall while on a tour of the city's sights. The accident unfortunately end up with one of the family members being hospitalised, requiring a short stay at the UCSF Medical Centre and further treatment upon returning home. Look this little quaint hotel. Each room has its own name and I stayed in "Mrs Doubtfire". The staff was friendly and helpful. The location was great. Despite there were a few homeless people, I felt quite safe and they were actually quite harmless. Will stay in this hotel again.

A comfortable independent hotel in an excellent position. The staff were very helpful from the welcoming drink and free street map on arrival, to the exceptional help from Cicero who was on duty overnight. Not only did he have excellent local knowledge but because we needed a travel bag, he provided us with information so that we complied with airline requirements, and even suggested a few shops we could try. Service indeed!
