First, the staff was very nice during our entire stay, front desk folks are very accommodating and sweet. The location is great if you are wanting to be at Fisherman's Wharf, as you are close to everything. First, the staff was very nice during our entire stay, front desk folks are very accommodating and sweet. The location is great if you are wanting to be at Fisherman's Wharf, as you are close to everything. We stayed over the 4th of July weekend, and it was great to be able to walk to the pier, get on a boat, see the fireworks, and then walk a few blocks back to the hotel without being stuck in the horrendous traffic. And with the price of parking in the City, it was nice not to need a car. Many great things to see in this part of town. And the Big Bus Tour leaves just a few blocks from here, very convenient. Uber was also an easy option, never waited more than 2 minutes ever. 7/11, Subway, IHOP all a few blocks a way. Nice little bar across the street at the Hyatt, and they have a happy hour. We are not athletically inclined, and we walked 30 minutes back from the Ferry Building (eat at Slanted Door, sit at the bar if you can't get a reservation) to the hotel. We also walked 30 minutes back from North Beach, (going downhill) where we had dinner with family members and drinks at Vesuvio. (Must see!) Again, the location is great.
The hotel is just as you would expect from a Holiday Inn. Clean and safe, with all the basic amenities you need. (When I say safe, remember, San Francisco has a huge homeless population, so they are all over the city. If you are not used to this, be prepared, it can be unnerving for those from other countries. Overall, you will be just fine.) But the hotel itself was safe. The free breakfast is nothing to write home about, as most free breakfasts aren't, but it serves a purpose and is free, great if you are traveling with kids and or on a super tight budget. There are a few vending machines in the lobby, and there is also an activities concierge in the lobby as well.
And when I say clean, the rooms and lobby were clean, but this place does a tremendous volume, which includes many young groups and many families with small children, so the place is a little sticky/smudgy in public areas. Halls were brimming with overflowing trash cans the entire time we were there. Pizza boxes, fast food containers, etc. Not unheard of when there are a lot of kids around. The hotel tried hard to stay on top of it, but it would have taken an army, they were very busy.
Our room had a window, but no view. It looked out onto a roof area surrounded by walls on all four sides, and all you could see where other hotel rooms. There are other rooms with bay and street views. As we don't spend much time in our room, this was fine for us, and since we booked last minute and were lucky just to have a room at all. And on the plus side, there was no street noise at all.The real noise came from inside the hotel.
Our major (and only) real complaint was the noise level at this hotel. Walls were very thin, and the doors need to be adjusted so that they don't slam so hard due to the auto-closers. Super loud, even when you tried to shut your door gently. If housekeeping was cleaning the room next to you, you heard everything. We were in a section where 4 or 5 rooms all had doors that opened into a little square vestibule, which seems to have amplified the noise. Kids jumping on the bed? Heard it. People quietly coming in to their room at midnight? Heard their normal conversations through the wall. Add this to the throngs of usual people who have no manners, whooping it up as they walk en masse through the halls at all hours of the day and night, and your sleep may suffer.
If this hotel had a bit more soundproofing, I would easily give them 4 stars. Now if we could just teach the guests to keep their voices down after hours.......
Overall, this is still a nice little hotel in a very convenient location, with a good team. If you are traveling with a gaggle of kids, or in a group on a budget, this is a great spot. Despite the noise, it's still a nice little spot at the Wharf.
