"My husband and I come to San Francisco for a few days every year, and we've stayed in a different boutique hotel each time. This year we decided to 'risk' going with a mystery hotel, because the $65/night rate just couldn't be beat. Well, my husband and I were both pleasantly surprised by the hotel.
Other reviewers complain about sirens or street noise at night... In a city like San Francisco you're going to hear noise at night; you can't blame the hotel! As one of the other reviewers said, earplugs can help.
You're also going to run into panhandlers and homeless--again, not something you can blame on the hotel. I've encountered panhandlers in front of the most expensive hotels in the city as well. They've never bothered my husband or me beyond a simple request for change. Just keep walking.
As far as the hotel itself, the hotel was charmingly done in an art deco style. Lots of beautiful photos on the walls - many of old theatre marquees and movie stars from the early 20th century. We arrived early, but the lady at the front desk was very nice and gave us a room. She said it was the only one she had available before 3pm, but told us if we didn't care for it, she'd give us a different room after 3pm. My husband dropped his business card in the bowl during check-in, good for a free breakfast!
After taking the elevator to the 3rd floor, we found a large room with a hallway, closet and large bathroom. Everything looked and smelled clean. We had a view from our window across a rooftop to another building approximately 50 feet away, but with the sheer curtains closed and the window open we had a fantastic breeze that made the room feel very airy, yet private.
The bed was clean, the sheets felt very soft and comfortable, and when I looked under the bed I found that it had been vacumned; no dust bunnies hiding! There were extra pillows and a blanket in the hall closet, along with an ironing board and iron, and plenty of real wooden hangers for our clothes.
In the bathroom, there was a nice-sized tub with a decent shower head, great shampoo and conditioner, as well as creamy-lathering soap. As I said before, everything was CLEAN!
There was free internet offered in our room, although we did not use it. There was not much in the way of cable tv, but we were okay with that, too. During our three-day stay we encountered several of the staff--everyone was very courteous and helpful. The hotel is super close to the BART station, and about 5 blocks from Union Square.
I do think the original room rate would be too high for me to consider paying, but for the mystery hotel price, I would recommend this hotel to others. My husband and I were happy with our stay, and we'll look to this hotel when we return to San Francisco next year!"
